Paraphrasing obviously, but I see this train of thought often, and it never sat right with me. Not because I'm an atheist, but because the logic just doesn't check out for me.

In most religions, an afterlife is an eternity; never-ending. I believe the only life we have is the one here on Earth. Wouldn't that mean that a finite resource or item [in this case, life] is inherently more valuable? We need to make the most of our limited time here.

That's my secret, I know my life is worthless.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Anybody who proposes this view, in sentiment if not in words, is mentally disabled. The first rule of economics is that scarcity matters.

Happiness, love, hate and anger are important precisely because they are not eternal. What value is an emotion if you have an infinite capacity to experience it? Not to mention, the proposition is itself inherently sadomasochistic; it is the reverence of death over life. The establishment of an eschatological cult that can only wish for the End of Days.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
It doesn't make sense, period.

I'm sure if all the athiests or of a religion that doesn't believe in an afterlife just died, I'm sure whoever said it would realise what worth they just lost.

Scientists, Politicians, Skilled workers, Maintenance men, Health workers, That pizza delivery guy, whatever. Suddenly gone, and I'm sure some mild chaos would ensue (Not every single person in these fields, of course, but atheist beliefs don't just apply to one set of profession).

I may be taking the quote quite literally, but it makes a good point. If someone genuinely thinks that people who don't think life goes on after we depart this plane clearly haven't thought this through, in more ways than just a theological standpoint.

Depends on how you interpret the meaning and worthiness of life. By my reckoning, we have no inherent purpose beyond reproduction, so if there is any meaning in this life, it's up for each individual to decide for themselves.

In layman's terms, maybe there's an afterlife. Maybe there's not. We don't know and likely never will since nobody's ever come back and said "Hey fella's, the apple pie's the best in the afterlife!"

And therefore, whether or not I believe there's something after, what's important is what's in front of me here and now. Personally, the more I thought about it, the more it seemed silly to me. Majorly religious folks shunning what they have here in front of them in favor for the supposed promise of something after.

I don't believe in a paradise after death. No such thing as perfection. Only the best you can make it with what you have. I believe, it's an expansion. Like a level. A different state of awareness. But I can't prove it. So, I try the best I can with what's in front of me. And I'll wait for my answer, when it comes.

You won't live for anything. Nothing you accomplish in life will matter. You will be remembered for the blink of an eye after your death and then be forgotten forever. You may as well never have existed to begin with.

Where? I'm religious and look into a bunch of different sects and dogmas and have really never heard such a statement.

I'm asking honestly, because to me this just sounds like a strawman.

So if I believe in an afterlife, my accomplishments will matter?

Should an afterlife exist, your consciousness will still exist and that allows for your accomplishments to matter, because you can still comprehend them.
What good is the consciousness of my accomplishments if I can't ever see/use/experience them again?

Well, should your consciousness continue to exist all of those moments would continue to exist as memories. All of those moments is what makes you as a person, you. Without them, you are nothing.

Most of us are people that won't make a huge impact on things, doing actions which will allow for us to obtain some form of historical immortality. Our accomplishments will be something that will only hold a close meaning to us and possibly a few close other people. To use this quote...

“I mean, they say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time.”

To most of us common Joe's, our accomplishments, our existence and impact, hold so little meaning because of how fleeting our existence is. If an afterlife did exist, then at least we can hold on to the very thing that made us the person we are after death.
But is it not more valuable and honorable to accomplish such things even though you wont keep the memories?

We always say to fight fire, you must use fire. This is wrong. Fighting fire with fire will leave scars and a new flame will rise. We must instead use water. It is the opposite of fire, it extinguishes the fire, it cools, it refreshes, it heals. We are made up of 70% water, we are not made up of 70% fire. Please practice what we truly are

I mean, I can't cite one specifically, but I've certainly seen it more than a couple times.
