the problem is that benefits are bracketed all retarded like, so when you earn more money you actually end up worse off until you're above... 50-60k annual household income, if I remember that figure right.

Flipping burgers is designed for kids to get their foot in the door, not for supporting a family. If you want more money then work your way up, or don't have a family in the first place.

Well at least they are now stuck to take care of themselves. No need to increase the social safety net. They are going to have to rely on it by themselves. On the other hand i believe a certain small business tax cut could come in handy, but I am not that well versed on tax laws.

Yeah, pretty much. Raising the price floor of my labour above my productivity is going to put me out of a job, and should put me out of a job. It'd be stupid to pay for something that's over-priced relative to its actual benefits.

I get your point, but the fact that some people are 'under-paid' (depending on how you're defining an "honest living") isn't a reason to do away with the whole system. I can't think of a single serious economist who's advocated for the abolition of welfare, and for good reason. If we want people to be able to maintain a stable and decent level of consumption (which, we do), then it's society's job to step up to the plate and do it through the safety net we all pay into.

It kind of does.

Only a few metro areas in the US could support a $15/hr minimum wage without significant disemployment effects; federally, it would be above the minimum wage peak of 1968 which was its highest value to date. The highest you could raise the federal minimum wage and still be justified by the welfare gains-disemployment trade off is around $10/hr.

Actually it's not that capitalism doesn't allow it. It's the fact that 90% of the population just doesn't give a shit. It's still possible to do work simply because you can and you choose to. Meta said something a while back in regards to this.

Most people need bait to provide them the extra incentive to get up and go. That being money. Capitalism just plays into that bait and false sense of security.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't enjoy living in a society without having people do things merely because they want to out of sheer decency. But capitalism isn't the root cause of that. We are. And by extension, I'd say that capitalism only feeds that shitty trend.
