I have to say, I like your honesty. But I mean, you're just making things worse for yourself.

I don't see why anyone is talking of monitors, all they do is talk to the mods and lock threads, it's not like that gets to the mods faster than a report, PM, or IM like Skype, which most of us probably have a mod on.
A monitor specific to Gaming, especially Verb, would be more effective.
Do you not see the word "Monitor" or do you honestly think they can ban people and edit posts?
Because they can't.
Doy.
A monitor, specific to Gaming, with specific abilities like being able to remove spoilers and such.

Verb is best suited for such a role, because of how prominent he is in Gaming, and how he follows the rules much closer than even the mods do.

PM'ing the mods over everything is extremely inefficient.

The punishment needs to be severe.

It's not like an insult or a lot of bad threads, where a few edits and an apology can fix everything.

Once something is spoiled, it's done. There's not coming back from that. At. All.

If the punishment is too light, given game's release date time difference, people are just going to post spoilers right around the release date for every big game that comes around.

You do realise he was rejected for being a monitor with no power anyway?
Hardly a bad idea, but to even think he'd be made a monitor with special abilities over the norm, when he was told "no" is rather silly.
It might be a decent idea for Cheat to look into, then again, I maintain my position that the staff is understaffed and the introduction of two monitors when they need mods was an incredibly stupid move by the staff.

I really do think this would be tough to moderate unless you take intentions into account.
Spoilers themselves are a subject to whether or not the topic can be considered freely available/known information or not.

For example, it's not a spoiler if I say something about the twist of a movie released in 1999 unless I specifically post it response to a specific example of someone who has made it clear that he or she hasn't seen it. Unless stated (heavily implied or outright), pieces of media past a certain distance from their release should not be subjected to scrutiny of spoilers.

On the other end of the spectrum: in a discussion based upon questions circling a piece of media of certain antiquity in which it is made clear that the poster is unaware of plot points, or in the discussion of a piece of media that is unreleased/has only been released for a short period of time, spoiler law should be enforced. The length of time noted should be subjective to some degree, as should it vary by case to case in slight measures. But looking at intention isn't the only way of enforcing rules against spoilers.

Here's what a Gaming-specific Monitor/Mod's power would include (ideally)

-the ability to edit anyone's posts (temporarily until a mod takes a gander at it)
-ability to ban anyone from gaming (temporarily until a mod takes a gander at it)

Verb is EST IIRC and Lemon is UK. That's a diverse timeframe, tbh.

Okay then, a Gaming moderator, and Gaming only. Something he's still the best candidate for.

for new releases
I know, my response was centered around how hard it would to be to enforce spoiler rules given how subjective spoilers can be. That's why that one sentence was the only thing I had quoted. I was building upon that idea in a way that explains a relatively simple way of identifying whether something should be considered a spoiler or not.

I mean, if you've never heard of Fight Club and I spoiled the plot for you (assuming the notion that you are interested in it is already available, and that you haven't seen it), that'd still be grounds for a paddlin'. It'd be the same point being tackled as with new content: it's ruining a work in a way in a way that unnecessarily taints a blank view of the subject from an uninformed person's perspective.

Ideally, enforce my/Verb's standards for spoilers until 2 weeks after release

afterwards only real spoilers count

or just give OPs the ability to remove/edit posts in their own thread.

I can see how the last part of my post could be a bad thing, though.

Is anyone else warming up to this mod/monitor for gaming idea, or is it just me?

Oh, I've had this idea for awhile. It's not like other forums don't do it--if anything, it's silly that we don't.

A long time ago, I proposed that Meta should be a mod presiding over Serious.
I still think he should, but he's AWOL right now.

A button that can collapse a user's post (complete with "Moderator action has been taken against this post. View at your own risk" message) would be the easiest way to combat this imo. This doesn't really oppose the idea of a forum-specific moderator, but with a combination of both ideas it would be more effective than what we have now.

I just feel like, as of right now, we're extremely exposed. There's no preventative measure in place whatsoever, it's all reactionary.

Even giving the OP of a thread the power to view everyone's post, before they post them (to deem if they're okay), would be better than nothing. YouTube has this option, where your comment has to be approved by the uploader before it's public.

This way it mitigates the effect of an asshole.

Yeah, I don't know why I didn't think of that. I'm always too hung up on punishments, because I just resent these fuckers, but yeah, that's a... decent solution. The trouble is preventing it. If we have a particularly persistent case, like what we have tonight, how long can we rely on the mods to censor every single post (and in a timely manner)?...

There has to be a preventative measure at some point.

At a certain point, punitive action must be taken. Collapsing the post with just the click of a button is more about having a nearly immediately response to control a situation. The only instance it wouldn't work in is spam, in which case banning the person (already an option) would be more effective.

The fact that he was just doing it for the lulz makes it even worse. Accidentally spoiling something, then correcting yourself afterwards, fair enough. Doing it with intent to cause upset is just fucking horrible. I'm with Verby on this.
