This is a thing. Go to the index/frontpage and click on one of the sep7agon icons for one of the boards. There should be a mark read button that you can use.
ohactually I know how I did itgo to "Look and Layout" in your settings and do this

A lot of things that used to work (like the search function) don't seem to work the way it's supposed to anymore. I guess SMF just bugs out when a forum gets too large?
