There's a limit on uploaded avatars. You can disable them in your look and layout preferences, but there's not a limit on linked avatars currently.

I was told that pages load slower on Sep7 due to images not being resized, so when a thread is loaded, the full sized image has to be loaded as well.

Mine aren't that bad actually, I've cropped at least half of them, the rest aren't too big, but could use some resizing.
