What a wonderful index of stories and memories! You've all been bitten by the travel bug I see! Jealous I am and bon voyage one and all haha! Oh and I've been around too and plan to make other travels also if I can :)  It's good to get in the sun and even better to get over it!

It's possible some people who posted here have died since 2014, heck, I thought even I died at one point! But somebody told me I was wrong and I believed them. Other than that, several things of note happened before 2020 but I forget what they were, I just remembered they were of note. Hope you're doing well grapes!!!

I have an opportunity to go to Southern France on the cheap but I don't like French people and they don't like me, so it's a real toss up!

Maybe I should be more worried since I'm an artist but I'm not that much. I do feel for the artists whose work was basically stolen without their consent to train the AI. For me, I just like creating stuff. Just because a computer can create doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to stop wanting to.

True! Very unfortunate that millions of artworks all across the internet were fed into these data sets without consent. And maybe coexistence is an option after all? What with both computers and people like yourself being able to create without conflict.

If your work can be replaced by AI then I'd think it probably wasn't much more than the artistic equivalent of popcorn anyhow.

It is naive to think that any artist's work, regardless of their caliber, cannot either : a) be replicated flawlessly or b) be superseded entirely in the near future.

Assuming of course that AI of this creative nature continues on the trajectory it is going, which is not an outlandish assumption to make by any means.

There are already cases with AI generated pictures winning art competitions and literature being generated in a similar fashion that is indistinguishable from the greats, etcetera etcetera. If you had made this comment two years ago, I would have agreed with you but now it simply no longer holds.

The Flood / AI, Art, and Artists.
« on: May 29, 2023, 12:52:22 PM »

Seems to be a bit of a hot topic as of late. Let's talk about it then why not?? What with the Large Language Models and image generating techniques, not to mention audio too. I'm sure you've seen examples on twitter and stuff.

It looks like the big three; music, literature, and pretty pictures are being hit simultaneously. And many artists are understandably confused and lashing out in strange yet feeble ways.

Maybe they should have internationally unionised when they had a chance! Now - a sorry state.

We can assume (for better or for worse), that AI will continue to get better at what it does, be it narrow or general. These temporary stop gaps the artists conjure up will not be enough to address the core of what is at stake here. It is lazy for artists to paint those who are advocates of this technology as 'AI bros'. Instead they need a united philosophy to enshrine the power of human made art, should it be in their interest to do so!

Thoughts?

Pretty sure I might have met some of you at some time in the past. Depends what you mean by "meet". I'm pretty sure anyway like I said already. Can't be certain though at this time. Would like to do it again.

Umm, what happened that you haven't left house for almost a year?

Experiencing prolonged lack of motivation to preform functions beyond eating and sleeping. Government initiatives (social security nets) provides me with means to survive for now.  Before this, not leave my village in decade. Who knows maybe next year?  ???
Where are you from, Onion Beetle?

Hello SecondClass, long time, do you still draw?

I am from midlands of Ireland. Low to sealevel, bog, bees and abundance of surprisingly attractive women (less so the men).

Not been here for around 5 and half years. But cannot leave house and have not left in many months (nearly year). Therefore have been revisiting old internet places, like here!

Crash course update please? Are cool people still posting? Following from this, I see familiar names and am noticing lack of names too. So I am telling you to stop by and say hello in this thread now. Good health to you all.

It is in times like these we can be especially thankful for the wonders of telephones, FAX, telex, and email!
During other pandemics like the Spanish Flu, those poor buggers must have been especially isolated!

Why just yesterday I FAXed (is that a verb too?) my great grand aunt in law. Gee it really is cool when you think about it.

I wish you good tidings and cheer on this special day. Remember it is a time to reflect and to be grateful and eat lots of tasty chocolate too haha! I digress, have a happy day, that is what is most important.

« on: July 09, 2016, 06:31:06 PM »
What a lovely coincidence, I too bought Dune only 3 days ago. I have not had much time to read it but I am on page 112.

So far I can say that it is deserved of all the praise it gets. "I know nothing comparable to it except Lord of the Rings." - Arthur C. Clarke

So I would reccommend that you read Dune first.

My autobiography springs to mind

That's fucked up.

Wait, Onion Beetle still exists? Luke, when are you gonna make that ban video public again on YouTube?

Onion Beetle still exists.

Hmmm, looking back on the video, it was quite autistic. I might make the other ones public instead
