Gaming / Re: Fallout or Elder Scrolls?
« on: February 26, 2016, 09:12:05 PM »
Gameplay - FO
Even though Fallout combat is sub-par already, TES is just shit tier.

Lore - TES
Actually took some world building.

Things to do - TES
Fallout is just too combat oriented.

Characters - FO
The interesting characters in TES are more or less just newspaper funnies in terms of depth.

Replayability - depends on how you value roleplaying or combat.

For reference I was comparing Oblivion with FO3 in my head.
Because I enjoy role-playing, TES is my favorite.

If that difference is that huge for you then you should CALM DOWN with the sexual undertones.
Romance and general identity is more than just smutty kinkyness.
You're the one who said that homosexual relationships are very similar to heterosexual ones.
Unless you mean the difference between being able to identify with homo or hetero romance is whether or not it arouses you, which is inherently sexual in nature.

And I don't really feel like I naturally identify with a character better just because they fit my demographic, that's pretty shallow. Has a lot more to do with personality or struggles they go through.

Which in a lot of games there aren't realistic representations of struggles lgbt go through, they're put in and it doesn't change the story or the way the character works at all. Like in Mass Effect Lopez or whoever the pilot was could have literally just replaced all the pronouns for his hubby with a female and it'd change the story zilch IIRC. Of course in ME homosexual relationships are supposed to be normal, but nothing about this inclusion is anything worth making a list about or really even mentioning.
We've been through this. I just said that it's not about getting turned on by it or anything. Yes, changing pronouns can make it easier for me to identify with it. But that doesn't mean I can't identify with anything else, it's just nice to have it sometimes, thus it's also nice to easily find such games.

Why are you so pissy about it? Does the existence of this curator hurt you in some way? Are you annoyed that more people than straight men play video games and is changing the industry? There must be some reason you care so much in a negative way.

This is just a matter of personal interest. If you don't feel like you need this - splendid. That doesn't mean you have to yell at everyone who do.
i'm not yelling im just being critical of where your priorities are is what it is

But it isn't huge. The only people making a big deal about it are people who don't like it.

When I play a game with LGBT characters, it's more of a "huh, that's neat" than HOLY FUCKING SHIT YES MOTHERFUCKER! SOME GAY SHIT ALL UP IN THIS BITCH!
When you look for games with it as your criteria it definitely goes beyond "oh neat".

not being able to relate to characters because of sexuality is DUMB unless the game is already sexual in nature
Nobody said anything about not being able to relate to characters because of their sexual orientation.
You do to some degree if you relate better to a character that aligns with your own.

Why do people get salty about an LGBT curator, but if there was a curator for "games with dragons" or "puzzle games" you wouldn't give a shit?
Because people don't make posts about those.
And puzzle games actually give you an idea of what the game is like.

Pretty sure posting the furry curator somewhere would get you a chorus of "yiff in hell"
But you're not required to follow that curator, soo...why care what they curate?
I'm just saying IMO it's silly to care so much about something so small enough to go looking for games with it as a criteria.

This isn't really related to this thread, but if the people in the US who are the best off (at least economically) are asian, why have I never seen anyone seriously use the term asian privilege?
Because the people who use the phrase white privilege don't really care about Asian success.

Also, Asian-American success is largely recent (last century or so). Asian Immigrants had to work their way up the ladder, which is in some ways a bigger deal than European-American success, since Europeans built that ladder to begin with years ago, and have stayed around the top since then. Asian-Americans pretty much embody the American dream. I think the next group we're going to see doing that is Indian-Americans.
For a second I thought you meant Native Americans and was going to have to give bad news.

What, same-sex romances can't be believable? Them not working as a straight relationship would make it extremely likely that it actually is tokenism, unless the writing is really good and the creator is trying to make some point through it.
If the way their relationship works is different than the generic heteronormative shit that usually gets projected onto them then that probably means the author wrote a story with the circumstances in mind and them being homosexual is something that helps govern the story, not something that is tacked on for extra points.

Quote
If a fictional relationship would work just as well as a straight or gay relationship, then why is the gay one tokenism? Surely if they're the same there's literally no difference except that the one that matches your own orientation is more easy to identify with.
Because lazy hetero relationships are an old as dirt, ubiquitous convention. Lazy homo relationships are becoming more of a trend now that you get extra points just for making a homo relationship appear.
IMO

And if the two are so similar, isn't which you identify with basically a matter of fetishization?
You're heterosexual you're aroused by heterosexual acts and enjoy that.
You're homosexual you're aroused by homosexual acts and enjoy that.

I guess people only romanced in ME to fap anyways so uh...

I kind of look at it from a narrative standpoint.
If a character relationship could be replaced with a heterosexual version and it has no effect on the story, there's no significance in it being a homosexual relationship, it's just there because it is. That's not meaningful or exciting.

Do I think that all universes need to have homophobic undertones? No, but if you want to make it anything more than being as generic and boring as any heterosexual relationship would be in its place, then it has to add some dynamic to the way characters interact with each other and the story.
I think the opposite. If a hetero relationship can be replaced with a homosexual relationship, that's great and goes to show just how similar they really are. When it comes down to it, homo couples are no different than hetero couples.
If they're so similar, why does it matter that they are there? What interesting perspective do they bring if they're functionally identical in a story? Does it come down to wanting to be able to get off voyeuristically?

How exactly do we make universities charge less? Ask them nicely?

One significant reason for rising tuition costs is the government's increasing willingness to subsidize them.
Why exactly does them getting more money from government mean they have to charge more? Honest question.

It's not that they have to; it's that they can. Say you're selling an expensive product, but one that people feel is often necessary to have, for $1,000. The government recognizes the value of your product and decides more people need access to it, so they'll chip in $200 for students that meet certain criteria (and they'll also give you tax breaks for facilities and stuff to help you out, because you sell good stuff). You realize that if you sell your product for $1,100, you'll still have the same number of customers but make 10% more money. It's obviously a simple analogy, but it works. It's a general economic principle that government subsidies create a higher supply of that product or service. That's not always a bad thing (it's actually often beneficial), but in this case it has allowed colleges to increase costs at an unreasonable rate.
How might this be solved if the demand for higher education really doesn't show any sign of falling? Does it have to be government intervention?

Because then they can just keep charging you what they did five years ago while making some extra sweet government money for doing nothing more.
Are you saying that if we cut those subsidies that they'd decide to reduce their margins or growth rather than just charging students more to make up the cost (considering students haven't told them to fuck off already whenever they increase costs)?

Massively increasing accessibility devalues previously existing and future degrees by flooding the labor market with them.
Same argument could be said for any kind of compulsory or free education could it not?

Games with lgbt aspects can hardly be assured to even give meaningful or interesting representations of them, let alone be exciting or fun games themselves, is what I'm saying.

And compromising your standards just for those lgbt situations is what encourages tokenism.

Serious / Re: Explain to me why college should be """""""free""""""" please

Because it's easier to make it taxpayer subsidized than it is to make universities reel in their absurd costs.

We already have taxpayer subsidized K-12 education. I don't see why people aren't bothered by that, too.
Considerably cheaper to educate kids with whiteboards and printed paper than the equipment and hands on programs you need to educate workers into their field.

It's not about politics, and neither is it about only buying these games exclusively. It's about providing a simple way to find these games to a demographic that doesn't get much representation in media.
while it makes sense for life simulators like Sims and shit

dont really see why someone needs to relate to their character on every level of personality to experience the game.
it doesn't even need to be about mimicking their own lives. Maybe they enjoy stories that deal with LGBT issues.

This is something you have to opt-in to. So if you're not interested, it basically doesn't exist for you.
I'm not saying it's a problem I'm just saying it's obsessive to feel the desire to have something like your sexuality permeate all the media you consume. Just doesn't seem like something that should be big enough a deal that it that makes you more intrigued with a game.

it's a game stop obsessing about sex and gender reeeeeeee

It's really funny how these Slavs admire an ideology that considers them sub-human.

Also undressing someone and recording them shoving things in their ass and getting enjoyment out of it sounds pretty homo.

Further proving that if you care this much about gays, you've probably got some repressed memories from your step-father that happened in a sweaty dacha on a July afternoon.

openly accept new madeup pronouns might be a bit too much to ask (that ze/zir xe/xem crap)
You know what, I consider myself to be a proponent of transgenderism after heavy consideration now, but I absolutely refuse to recognise this special snowflake pseudo-science garbage. There are only two genders that you can identify with. End of.
I sympathize with the idea of agender or whatever, it'd be kind of useful to be able to not be shoehorned into either female or male roles if you don't really feel fit for either. But for convenience sake you'd think those folks would be fine with the already well established pronoun for indefinite gender "they" instead of making up some new shit.
