The only reason animals reproduce so much now is because carnivores exist. You realize that, right? So while it would take a long time for herbivores to adjust their behavior, that's the only reason why they fuck so much. I'm pretty sure we could come up with some kind of strategy to prevent anything like that. Find a way to sterilize all wildlife. I don't fucking know.

Have you ever considered that that's why they wouldn't overpopulate?... It would either eventually level off, or they would adapt.
It's difficult for the populations to adapt to a system such as that because favorable or unfavorable genes, all face the same difficulty of being able to find suitable sustenance. The only adaptation that would help would be having to eat less. An equilibrium is impossible to reach in a timely manner because the available food supply fluctuates just like any population does, unpredictable events like weather can cause widespread crop failure in just a year.
