Back to fucking square 1 again in the UK. 16,000 positive cases went under reported because some fucking helmet misplaced an excel spreadsheet. We're in the midst of a full blown second wave. It's March all over again.
I think I low key preferred lockdown to this weird indefinite purgatory we're in now. At least it felt we had some sort of collective goal we were working towards. Now it feels like there's no end in sight.

Seems like the UK's about to head into a second lockdown. Gatherings of more than 6 are to be banned again.

as much media as i do consume, TV shows probably represent the biggest lacuna in my wheelhouse
given how many people have recommended this one to me, though, i guess i have no choice but to check it out
It's actually pretty cut and dry as far as a TV show plot goes, a dark toned buddy cop murder mystery, but the attention to detail and the writing in general for just plain up everything within the first season, and even the ones that come after(even though they couldn't outdo the first season) is pretty special. It also has heavy doses of philosophical nihilism strewn about it, which especially seems up your alley.
Rust is basically the physical embodiment of Verb played by Matthew McConaughey.

Idk how to feel about this. While I fully support any and all victims of sexual harassment and assault, I'm not totally on board with these petty twitter takedowns. If you have legitimate and serious allegations to come forward with you should be going through the proper legal channels with law enforcement.
While I appreciate that it's difficult for a great number of women to actually report a sexual crime, as well the innumerable hurdles they have to endure just to see any sort of judicial progress, a social media tit for tat isn't going to benefit anybody, and it's not really yielding any great results for the victims.

A monument by nature is purposefully designed to commemorate an historical figure for their past deeds. Removing statues honouring slave traders does not "revise" or nullify history any more than removing swastika flags and banners in Germany post 1945 did. You can appreciate and understand historical context without having to aggrandise morally bankrupt people with memorials.
Statues celebrating individual people are fucking stupid anyway. You can't attribute multi faceted historical feats to one person.

Never have I seen a TV show been erased from the public consciousness so quickly as much as TWD. I mean, maybe only GoT has surpassed it, but at least GoT was talked about right up until the finale.
TWD is pretty much syfy tier now. Literally nobody talks about it and yet AMC are still adamant on keeping it on life support.

Honestly nothing new is really grabbing my attention at this moment in time. I got into the first season of Last Kingdom if you're into historical Anglo Saxon and Viking aesthetics but my interests started waning in season 2 and haven't really picked it back up again.
I rewatched The Terror (more historical kino set in the Victorian era) which isn't a new show, but still remains really good. It has Master and Commander vibes with early GoT internal scheming and politics if that's your kind of scene. Also has various supernatural elements going on as well.
I read most of the book series that The Last Kingdom is based on a few years ago, was a good read but I got a bit bored of it just being Uhtred being betrayed and failing to get Bebbanburg over and over again. The show was pretty cool but it lost my interest too lol
Also find it really hard to emotionally connect to Uhtred the way he goes through wives like they're empty crisp packets or something.

No one here is positing the notion that innocent lives need to be ruined to see any significant change, at least not seriously. But this instant jump to riots and looting being the main focus of concern, when it's actually a symptom of the rotten system, is a serious misalignment of where the priorities should be.
The point is not to encourage the violence by making it out to be a necessary evil to create change within a rotten system.
If you don't believe innocent lives need ruining, then I don't understand how you can say that "the system makes it necessary."
When you have a culture so rife with inequality and an infrastructure so utterly disinterested in making any sort of meaningful systemic change then yes, civil disorder is an inevitability at that point. That's what I'm referring to when I say the system makes it necessary. There's a stark difference between actually condoning rioting and pointing out the societal hallmarks which has lead to it.

Sorry, I don't think hurting innocent people is necessary to fight oppression. I think that's a very dangerous belief seriously lacking in empathy.
There's a reason MLK said that, "darkness cannot drive out darkness, only the light can do that." His movement didn't go around singing kumbaya, but they didn't go around hurting people for no reason either, and yet they somehow managed to get the civil rights act enacted and abolish segregation and Jim Crow laws.

Hard power gets met with hard power. Let's not forget that the catalyst to these riots and protests is because a state funded fascist essentially curbstomped a guy who pleaded for his life for 9 minutes over a fucking counterfeit 20 dollar bill, allegedly. This is also just one of the multitude of incidences of police brutality that haven't even been documented.
And people wonder why a violent response ensued.

The issue is further complicated by the fact that everyone is the States is packing heat, (so cops are on edge at all times anyway) and now they are on extra-edge because several states have gone full revolution-mode.
So protestors are going to be seen as targets by the police, regardless of their actual threat. Why are they in charge of maintaining the peace again? And given guns?
Not defending the pig's behaviour but Nick does have a point about the prevalence of guns and gun culture in the states. Given how liberal it is for basically anyone and everyone to carry a firearm it would be really silly for the police not to come armed for the potentiality of self preservation.
