It's the GoldenEye 64 of action-adventure games.
Best thing since sliced bread upon release, but ages like sliced bread too. Now it's kinda moldy and gross.
I can still play OoT and have fun with it--I'd just rather play basically any other Zelda game.
I've just left the forest and so far the game seems to have aged well...

Guides have a knack of sucking out all the fun--especially when it comes to Zelda. If you give it another shot, I'd dispense with that unless you're hopelessly stuck.
I'll try it without a guide. I think I'll try and finish OoT first to ease me into the Zelda mood though. I find it hard to just suddenly jump into a new game.

Uh-huh, it's a slog. The temple is actually where it picks back up, in my opinion--but there's a lot of mixed opinions of that section overall.
The main appeal of the game is, as Vien said, the sidequesting. You get to know all the people in the town very well over the course of the three day cycle, and the constant brooding atmosphere is remarkable. I'd say give it another shot when you're able--but I dunno how many times you've tried it already.

-I have tried playing MM twice and I just can't get into it. Each time I've made it to the snowy mountains and just give up. I have no idea what it is. Snowhead is the absolute worst part of that game. I think the rest is totally worth it, though.
