The Flood / Went on a nice trip to Cardiff today (pic dump)« on: June 09, 2017, 01:07:35 PM »
Felt like a day out so I visited Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Great place. My main point of interest was the castle, and I took a lot of pics. It's comprised of a manor house, an old keep and some big ass walls around it with some other goodies I'll get to...
Outside the front of the castle Here's a look at the manor house up from one of the battlements A view of the city Some bars The keep x3 Outside the manor Some inside rooms [imghttp://i.imgur.com/Yr5Qczb.jpg[/img]http://More outside Fun fact: In WW2 the castle's tunnels were used as an air raid place, and they've done it all up to get the sort of atmosphere back, with posters and sound effects. There's a museum in there too. I recorded my walk down the corridor with the ambience, I'll upload that in a bit. They also had some stuff to try on, so I couldn't resist. Gunz I also found three Greggs, fucking great mate. And that ends Big Boss's wholesome fun day out, thanks x 184

And who are you, the proud lord said,
that I must bow so low? Only a cat of a different coat, that's all the truth I know. In a coat of gold or a coat of red, a lion still has claws, And mine are long and sharp, my lord, as long and sharp as yours. And so he spoke, and so he spoke, that lord of Castamere, But now the rains weep o'er his hall, with no one there to hear. Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall, and not a soul to hear. YouTube One of the best things to come out of the show tbh. 185

Gaming / Sony Exec comments on backwards compatibility« on: June 06, 2017, 06:56:52 AM »
"It is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much."
Quote The PlayStation 4 does not offer the kind of backwards compatibility support that the Xbox One does, and it sounds like that won't change soon, if comments from a top exec are anything to go on. In a new interview, PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan said backwards compatibility is a much-requested, little-used feature. https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-exec-comments-on-backwards-compatibility/1100-6450573/?ftag=GSS-05-10aab8d&utm_campaign=trueAnthem%3A%20Trending%20Content&utm_content=5935cd5a19694a00073b01f3&utm_medium=trueAnthem&utm_source=facebook 189

Serious / Theresa May says the internet must now be regulated following last night« on: June 04, 2017, 06:31:04 AM »
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/theresa-may-internet-regulated-london-bridge-terror-attack-google-facebook-whatsapp-borough-security-a7771896.html
New international agreements should be introduced to regulate the internet in the light of the London Bridge terror attack, Theresa May has said. The Prime Minister said introducing new rules for cyberspace would “deprive the extremists of their safe spaces online” and that technology firms were not currently doing enough. The Prime Minister made the comments outside Downing Street on Sunday morning in the aftermath of the van and knife attack that saw seven people killed and dozens injured. "We cannot allow this ideology the safe space it needs to breed - yet that is precisely what the internet, and the big companies that provide internet-based services provide,” Ms May said. “We need to work with allies democratic governments to reach international agreements to regulate cyberspace to prevent the spread of extremist and terrorism planning. The call was one plank in Ms May's speech following the attack. The Prime Minister also said Britian was too tolerant of extremism and that "pluralistic" British values had to be established as superior. The PM warned there was "a new trend in the threat we face" and that while the three recent terror attacks in the UK were not linked by "common networks", they were "bound together by the single evil ideology of Islamic extremism". The Conservative manifesto pledges regulation of the internet, including forcing internet providers to participate in counter-extremism drives and making it more difficult to access pornography. Ms May speech is thought to be the first time she has publicly called for international cooperation in bringing forward more red tape to cyberspace, however. The intervention comes after the introduction of the Investigatory Powers Act 2016 – the so-called 'Snooper's Charter' – which expands the powers of spying agencies and the Government over the internet. 193

Gaming / Prototype review (PS4)« on: May 23, 2017, 01:14:48 PM »
This game's been out a while now, some of you have probably played it. I just finished the PS4 version so while it's still fresh in my mind I'll put this up. I plan on reviewing more games to add to my collection to get my thoughts out.
Prototype is an open world sandbox game originally released in 2009, and was later remastered for the Xbox One and PS4 in 2015. GAMEPLAY Prototype is an open world action game in which players take control of Alex Mercer, an angsty, foul mouthed man who has been infected with a horrific virus that has bestowed him with incredible shapeshifting powers. These powers include turning his arms into an assortment of deadly weapons, super speed and durability and the ability to consume other beings to both restore health and assume their form as a disguise. Throughout the game the player is able to accumulate points and spend them on upgrades to expand their deadly arsenal. Ever wanted to disguise yourself as a sweet old lady, run up a skyscraper and then elbow drop someone on the ground with a massive mutated fist? Well this game lets you do that and then some. Your wildest dreams have come true. With Alex Mercer's incredible athletic skills, the city is simple to traverse, and you are able to sprint, hop and glide from rooftop to rooftop. In mere seconds you can go from ground level to standing atop a towering skyscraper, surveying the grisly red hue that envelops most of the game's world. The real meat of the gameplay comes from being able to switch Alex Mercer's offensive power on the fly. You can begin by slashing at an enemy with your claws before finishing them off with your enormous sword arm. There's fun to be had by experimenting with different combos and power swaps, although some definitely see more use than others. More often than not I found myself resorting to using the whipfist (a long, bladed whip arm) to hit and grab enemies from a safe distance. While the powers themselves are a joy to use, the actual combat itself isn't too great. If you don't utilize your movement skills to hop and dodge enemies you will frequently find yourself being rag-dolled around the area while losing large chunks of your health. Many of the enemies use rapid flailing attacks that are hard to escape from which can lead to much frustration when dealing with multiple enemies at once. The Whipfist is probably the most useful power in the game In addition to your own mutated capabilities, you are able to utilize the weapons of the military force known as Blackwatch to combat both them and the mutated monstrosities that are out to ruin your day. Any weapon can be hijacked, so that means you can pick up guns, drive tanks and steal helicopters, if you so wish. They're nothing special, I personally have more fun using the powers but sometimes the situation calls for more heavy steady artillery that only rockets and heavy machine guns can provide. The chopper can be quite awkward to use, as the button used to rotate the chopper is also the button that switches your locked on target so you might frequently find yourself hitting the wrong enemy while you try and position yourself. PRESENTATION Prototype isn't the prettiest game in the world. Bland textures, stilted looking facial animations and repeated models make the game feel more like a high end PS2 game than an Xbox or PS3 game. Do you like the color red? Do you like being absolutely bathed in it? Because this game has tons of it. From the excessive gore caused as a result of your bloody trail of carnage to the streets to the sickly pink color of the infected mutants, the game is a reddish assault on your eyes. I understand that it was part of the design choice to fit the theme of a city undergoing a mass infection but after a while I just got sick of seeing red all the time. At least some of the cutscenes that weren't from the in-game engine looked nice and the game as a whole ran smoothly for me for the most part. Red. Everything is red. STORY Prototype's story involves a really pissed off man who doesn't remember anything and gradually learns more about himself and the sinister conspiracy around him as the game progresses. Sound familiar? Well, Prototype doesn't really do anything groundbreaking or shocking with it's story, it's your fairly standard tale of secret government projects and biological weapons 'accidentally' being unleashed on an area. There's no real shocking revelations, no unexpected betrayals from lovable characters and no incredible twists that will eventually make it onto a Watchmojo list. Actually, the only somewhat interesting character in the game is Alex Mercer himself, and I will admit there are some things you learn about him that I found interesting and won't spoil. By the end of it all I didn't really feel like I had accomplished anything major or revolutionary, I just beaten another boss, a harder version of the same enemies I had been pulverizing throughout the game. CONCLUSION Prototype is somewhat of an oddity. It doesn't look great, the story isn't very interesting and the combat can often be frustrating. There's something about it that keeps making me come back to it, though. There's something undeniably fun about having all this power at your disposal and being given free reign of the city to do what you want with it. In fact I'd argue that the best part of the game is when you're done with the story, you've unlocked everything and you just embark on a roaring, gory rampage , cleaving through streets of infected with glee, freely leaping from building to building before doing a back flip off the tallest point and landing a bullet dive drop on some unfortunate soul that happens to be standing right at the point of impact. If you play games for deep stories or are just in it for the visuals and presentation, you may be disappointed here but if you are able to just enjoy causing mindless carnage and creating your own fun gory scenarios then you may just enjoy this grisly power fantasy. 207
Gaming / So did we like Final Fantasy 15?« on: May 22, 2017, 05:01:17 AM »
It's been a few months so it's had time to sink in. Did you like it? I really enjoyed it, it had an interesting story, the soundtrack was nice and I actually grew to like the characters.
I did write a review a while back that I'll put in the spoilers Spoiler Let me start off this review by saying that I didn't follow this game's development at all, nor was I caught in the hype train. I didn't play any of the demos nor did I watch any of the trailers. Hype can be a dangerous thing and if you get caught up in it you'll probably end up dissappointed. I know, I've been there. -Insert picture of MGSV- So with that out of the way, here's my review of Final Fantasy Fifteen. After being in development for like 8 years, it's finally out. Was it worth the wait? Well, that's up to you but here's my own thoughts on the game anyway. GAMEPLAY The game is an action RPG that features gameplay that's a far departure from previous entries in the series. The turn based battle system has been replaced by an entirely real time combat system, though there's an optional setting that allows you to pause combat and choose your next move, if you prefer. I used this setting because it allowed me to take a breather and plan out my next move if the battle gets too heated. Prince Noctis can roll, warp, parry and link strike his way to victory as he travels the open world and teams up with his best buddies to reclaim his throne. The only Final Fantasy games I've really played are Ten and Tactics Advanced, and I found this game's combat took me a little while to get used to but not too long later I was zipping around the arena and rolling like a madman, phasing in and out of danger like a mother trying to do christmas shopping at the last minute. Teamwork is a big focus on combat, and while you're only able to control Prince Noctis, your band of merry men fight alongside you. By stringing together hits when they are near, you are able to perform link strikes on enemies for MASSIVE DAMAGE. Doesn't it just feel so good when everyone's together? Noctis is able to use all weapons but the squad is pretty limited to what each members can use. The brawn, Gladiolus, is focused on heavy weapons like greatswords, while the brains, Ignis is based around quick wepaons like daggers and polearms, with Prompto bringing up the rear with guns and tech based weapons like DRILL BREAKERS. While there isn't a massive variety of weapons available for you to pick up, some of them are pretty cool. Especially the royal arms, the ancient weapons of kings that you can nick from tombs. The open world is pretty fun to explore, being able to traverse on foot or in car, and later on even able to ride the fan favorite chocobos. By stopping off at the various outposts scattered around the world you can stock up on items, gather intel about the area and take on the million fetch quests that pepper the world. You'll be spending a lot of time in the car and you're limited to the roads while driving it, no offroading for you. You don't really need to worry about the controls for the car because all you have to really do is accelarate or break because it automatically sticks to the road. If you don't feel like driving you can also use the car to fast travel to previously unlocked areas. PRESENTATION This game looks good. From the vast landscapes to the monster designs and noodles, everything here on show looks great. I mean look at that hair, DAMN! While the lip syncing can be a bit off sometimes, it didn't bother me that much because I was too focussed on how nice everything looked. I didn't notice any glitches at all, actually which is a good thing. I have to talk about the music, it's so damn good. The battle music is just awesome, and really gets me pumped. In addition to this game's great soundtrack you are even able to acquire and listen to the OSTs of past Final Fantasy games to listen to in your car! One issue I do have is the loading screens, be prepared to see a lot of them if you prefer to fast travel. It helps if you have something else to do while the game loads, maybe go read a book or something. While the combat looks and feels great, the screen can tend to be a bit cluttered if there's too many enemies around and it can be a bit hard to tell what's going on. I mean, what the hell is going on here, where am I? What do I do? Or this time? Oh god, I'm so small, where am I going? STORY Let me just preface by saying this game will make a lot more sense if you've seen the Kingsglaive movie and the Brotherhood anime. There are things in this game that might be lost on you if you haven't seen either of those things. While it's a bit loose in some parts, I didn't find the plot too hard to follow to be honest. This is the tale of Prince Noctis, rightful heir to the throne of Lucis who must travel to his capital and reclaim what is his. He is aided in this quest by his best friends, Prompto, Gladiolus and Ignis who seem to have modeled themselves on an early 2000s boy band. Jokes aside, a big focus on this game is teamwork and friendship and I really enjoyed seeing their brotherhood and carmaderie play out. I genuinely liked the crew and seeing the way they interact, from cracking actually pretty funny puns to playfully taking the piss and goofing off around the campfire. In the second half of the game you start getting railroaded down a more linear path towards the end goal, and excluding one incredibly tedious section, it's pretty good and took some surprising twists. I enjoyed the story and characters, it had some pretty fucking cool looking setpieces that were just incredible to see, though there were some parts of the story I felt were lacking or could have been explained better. CONCLUSION Final Fantasy 15 is a sprawling, enjoyable game that will keep you hooked for hours on end. The fetch quests can be a bit tedious and farming for experience or items can get boring, I guess that's just baggage that comes with being an RPG. I had a blast with this game, and over 50 hours in there's still loads for me to do. Even if the story gets lost on you towards the end, I think you may enjoy the friendship between the squad and amazing visuals. While there are things I find dissappointing like the lack of a large cast of usable summons and some issues with the story I still found the game to be hell of a blast to play. As I said at the start, I didn't follow the game's development at all so I pretty much went in completely blind and was pleasantly surprised by all of what this game had to offer. If you've been burned by the hypefire then you'll probably have a lot more problems with it than I did but hey, we all feel differently. I rate games based on a scale of: -Ignore -Bargain bin buy -Rent -Buy at full price This game is a timesink that will keep you invested for hours on end, if you can put up with the driving, fetch quests, hunting, fishing, cooking and everything else. If you've been waiting on this game for the past 8 or so years then you've probably already bought it but if not, then I'd say it's a full price buy if you want to really get into it and lose yourself in the engrossing world. The game claims to be a Final Fantasy for fans and first timers, and as someone who's barely played the series it did a right bang up job of welcoming me to the world and keeping me interested. It might be worth a rent if you're not sure of whether or not you'll really like it, but then there's always the free demos to try out beforehand. Whatever floats your boat. 208

The Flood / I fucking hate fish, man.« on: May 21, 2017, 04:02:20 PM »
Alright story time, gather round. I'm fucking terrified of fish. I'm being dead serious, fuck fish. They're all horrible and slimy and they have awful big eyes that just stare into your soul. How anyone can touch them or think they look nice is beyond me.
The actual details of the event that triggered this horrific fear aren't fully clear to me but the actual event is certain. I was a young wee lad and as all young wee lads do, I was misbehaving. This event took place in a local supermarket, I believe it was Tesco. Evidently my poor mother had had enough of my hijinks and decided to pick up a nearby item to chase me with. Unfortunately, it was a fish. My mother chased me around Tesco with a fucking dead fish. This single event traumatized me for life and since then I've had a horrible fear of fish. If there's one on the floor, I can't go near it. I hate the way they look, and I imagine they feel awful too because I've never touched one. To add to this tale of woe, a few years ago one of my granddad's goldfish died. As most people do when they lose their fish, they flush it down the toilet. Unfortunately, he neglected to actually flush the toilet and so the fish remained in limbo, its lifeless orange corpse floating around in the bowlish confines of the toilet, an ever present gatekeeper for the next unexpecting pisser. Of course, the next person to use the bathroom was me, and unzipped my pants and let loose the yellow stream, blissfully unaware of the lovecraftian-like horror that lay just below me in the water. I looked down and I froze for a split second then bolted from the bathroom as fast as I could, shaking in fear from the horrific sight I had just witnessed. Fuck fish, man. I can't stand them. 210
