I really don't understand how it's "deep". It's like how people say Dark Souls is deep.
Religious stuff, and other things they didn't explain well in the anime.
Maybe the religious stuff has meaning past the first TV iteration.
But the director/writer, Anno whatshisface said that none of it had meaning (at that time anyway) and he just put it in because it looked cool.
So people are just trying to find meaning where there is none. Like religion. Oh my God, this series is deep!
