It's an honest mistake considering you think a game being a sandbox affects narrative.

People who refer to it as a sandbox, unless directly talking about the map sandbox in Halo 3, do not understand what it means.

Well I was under the impression that you were one of those people, so I apologise for trying to appeal to that side of you.

I've heard Halo refered to as an arena shooter and FPS.

People who refer to it as a sandbox, unless directly talking about the map sandbox in Halo 3, do not understand what it means. There is no arguing factual definitions to video games.

FIFA isn't an RPG.

Final Fantasy isn't an FPS.

Dynasty Warriors isn't a MOBA/RTS.

It's a sandbox.

That isn't, though. Halo is a sandbox, too. You can't go from one side of the ring to the other.
Alright, I'm done arguing if you're gonna get like this.

Thanks, this'll make good copy pasta. Look up definitions to a category of a game once in a while, Issac.

Thank you for splitting the hairs further. Semantics, etc. And you can pop anywhere on the map via heli early on, so no, the experience thing isn't very accurate.

I'd also like to point out that yeah, it's not surprise you forgot about the fast travel mechanics in MGS V, considering they never fucking tell you.

Good job, devs.
Wait what...?

Yeah see? Exactly. You wouldn't know UNLESS someone told you.

Around certain places in the map (usually near towns) are big orange crates. You know, the ones you see on your base to fast travel. Walk up to it and hold B (circle) by the sign and take the paper and you'll have access to that fast travel area.

I don't see the point in needing to remember people's names anyway.

We're all faceless words on a screen, bouncing ideas around. I've always said that the main draw to this site is the arguments you have with people. I just happen to like a few people along the way.
I come from Bungleboards, which is far more tight knit than this website of Flood fallouts.

So maybe that's why.

But Eliab, you actually can fast-travel in MGSV via postal service.

Good point. I never use it so I forgot.

But it's also worth pointing out that you have to work to unlock this feature. So... kinda two steps forward, one step back for Luciana's argument still.

MGS V isn't open world

If we're going by your definition of open-world, it isn't. Which is what I was going by.

Quote
Also, you can fast travel via boxes in MGS V around the maps. Pay attention.

Edit: Also, learn the difference between your and you're plz

I know the difference.
I said sandbox first. The point I'm making is you can go from one corner of the map, to the other, without loading screens. It's a sandbox.

Nice try on insulting me from someone who can't even get grammar right. Or as you'd say, one step forward, two steps back.

And it doesn't matter if you unlock fast travel, it's still fast travel. You have to unlock bases in Far Cry to go there as well. You can still run around anywhere.

Okay, disregarding the other stuff so I don't argue more.

I can't even... what? MGS V isn't open world (or sandbox. That's what I originally said. You can go anywhere)? Yeah it is. You can go any- nevermind. We're splitting hairs and my point isn't getting through to you.

I'm not gonna break down every post like you guys at Sept love to do, so here we go.
Spoiler

Well I will, considering it's the only way to get to the bottom of arguments.

Quote
The frequency thing about saving wasn't even that big a deal to me.

It breaks up gameplay inorganically. Fact.

I liked them sometimes but they overstay their welcome.

Quote
Honestly, I miss a lot of the codec crap. I liked to put my controller down and listen to some amazing voice acting.

Yup, that's why I buy games. To put my controller down.

Quote
It felt like after MGS 4, Kojima was scared of it.

Kojima stated that he felt they weren't "next-generation" enough for MGSV.

Quote
GTA, Far Cry, MGS V, etc.

MGSV =/= GTA/Far Cry.

MGSV is just roads that connect smaller Ground Zeroes together.

Quote
MGS 3 has more open areas, but you still have paths you have to go down to get to certain areas.

Just like MGSV.

There are parts of MGS3 that are just as "open-world infiltration" -esque as MGSV, believe me.

Quote
You can't just fast travel or take a helicopter to some zone.

Can't do that in TPP, either. Not a super big point of contention but worth pointing out nonetheless.
Spoiler
Just because Kojima says the codec stuff doesn't feel next gen, doesn't mean his opinion should negate the ones I, or anyone else opposing it feel. When I said I enjoyed codec stuff, I mean it immersed me in the story far more than a cassette did. Don't cherry pick my words when I say putting down the controller.

And yes, I am aware there are some open parts to MGS 3, like Grozni Grad, but you still had to sniper fight the SAME THING AS QUIET and not booby style, and then take a long tunnel and crap. It guided you. There were paths that led out into open zones.

Also, I was comparing MGS V to GTA and Far Cry in the simple fact that they are open world. That is it. You need to listen to me when I bring up the comparisons and not just say it's not it to make a point sound more "correct" to you.

And yes, last I checked you COULD fast travel in MGS V and take helicopters to certain areas. I don't know what you've been doing this entire game.

I'm referring to the pacing of the story. I feel the pacing of the story for MGS V was off.

It was but that's always the case for Metal Gear games, albeit, some more than others.

Quote
The writing wasn't the best either, but the level design of the other games helped the pacing to everything.

I still don't see how. At least in TPP I can play the game while learning new things, whereas in older MGS games I'm constantly taken out of gameplay to listen to irrelevant dialogue about which frequency is my save feature.

Quote
Sandbox gameplay does not compliment a game like MGS in that regard.

Snake Eater has sandbox gameplay, though.

The tapes still kinda do that for me, but not to the same degree. It felt like after MGS 4, Kojima was scared of it.

As for Sandbox, when I mention that, I mean the entire world is completely open to you. You can go anywhere. You get thrown in and there you go. GTA, Far Cry, MGS V, etc.

MGS 3 has more open areas, but you still have paths you have to go down to get to certain areas. You can't just fast travel or take a helicopter to some zone.

The music on the cassette tapes were also a let down.

No Nuclear or Elegia. No David Bowie. No Bon Jovi, no Duran Duran.

They didn't even include TBIYTC, Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday, and Calling to the Night.
Not if you're on PC :^)

But how does that affect storytelling, at all?

Your logic isn't logical.

You can argue that it's a poor design decision but it doesn't affect plot or writing or dialogue. At all. Which is what "story" refers to.
I'm referring to the pacing of the story. I feel the pacing of the story for MGS V was off. The writing wasn't the best either, but the level design of the other games helped the pacing to everything.

I honestly think open world ruined a lot of it.

How would the open world affect the story, exactly? Because both Snake Eater and Peace Walker were essentially the same thing.

Let's not blame the gameplay advancements for poor writing.
Snake Eater and Peace Walker had more open places you could go, but they still guided you down paths, Peace Walker especially. It was zones you went to but you followed a path zone by zone.

MGS 4 was basically the same in that you slowly went down a path they guided you on. Some missions in MGS V (such as the mist area with the bloody hospital) kinda did the same thing, but it ultimately took a sandbox effect.

That in itself ruined it because you visited the same areas again and again, and you could before you activate a story mission. That alone takes away a lot of the immersion for me. MGS 4 gave you the illusion the world was more open but you still had that hand guiding you down the path, and Peace Walker literally showed it with a map.

This one just threw you in two boxes and told you to have fun. It didn't help you didn't have to do the story missions in any specific order.

I could never see Solidus as a good bad guy. Liquid seemed genuinely threatening, but Solidus seemed like a wannabe villain who never quite made the role. He was pushed to be the biggest bad guy but never really felt like it.

Which is ironic considering Liquid is the poster boy for wannabes.

Though, I guess Solidus' irrelevance in the grand scheme of things was intentional considering absolutely every little detail in MGS2 was intentional.
You never knew if he was good or bad anyway. By killing him you let the Patriots run wild but the opposite effect was also fucked. It was weird, yeah.

Also, the fact Mantis is a ginger means he has no soul.

It all makes sense.

Spoiler
Personally, I'd have preferred it if he was more normal and slowly got fucked up over time. Not always a gas mask wielding fuck. Naomi even says as much in the original, in that he dove too deep in the mind of a serial killer.
Spoiler
It's not incompatible. Young Mantis had no personality, he fed off of the egos of those around him. As he grew older, his personality was molded by those of the the minds he read. When he went into FBI work, the serial killer drove him insane. Or completely insane, I should say.
I think the greatest question is how the hell was he even sane enough to WORK for the FBI? You'd think the normies at the Bureau would be freaked out to see a floating ginger in a gas mask going

"Yesssssssssssssss. You like the Legend of ZELDA, DON'T CHUUU????"
I mean, I'd assume Mantis managed to read a lot of normal minds over his life. He outright says in MGS1 that he likes Snake because he doesn't just think about fucking like everyone else. He probably mellowed out a lot between MGSV and his pre-FBI days.
Oh yeah, he didn't let Meryl's sexy times seduce him. My parents were around when I was younger to see that cutscene.

"Snake! Make love to me!!!!"

Sooooo awkward....

So like, is that it for metal gear titles?
In terms of quality, probably.

But honestly, I think Revengeance had a stronger and better told story than MGS V did. Open world hurt MGS because MGS always relied on the progression of guided levels for cutscenes and all that. The flow was consistent.

In MGS V it's open world so it's "do x amount of missions and get some worthless explanation of why you need to kill/extract someone working for Cipher."

I can't be the only one who feels like this? It's mission, mission, mission, cutscene, repeat. And the only "progression" is Miller giving you an explanation as to why so and so guy you're trailing needs to be extracted.

It's like the Skyrim fetch quest effect where they can go into detail about why you need to get them the golden claw, but at the end of the day you're still just going to grab a fucking claw and run it back to the cuck Inn keeper.

I personally like that we never find out anything about him. That isn't really his role in the game anyway - he's just there to drive things forward and nothing more. Diabolus ex machina, if you will.
When it comes to prequels that are supposed to tie in with the original things that kicked something off, a lot of times the creator will just throw characters from the original in the prequel because lol just cuz.

I mean, he could have done the same with Wolf, Decoy Octopus, and various others.

Spoiler
I'd honestly have loved Decoy Octopus to be Venom Snake though. That was the speculation early on and it's so much better than the real result if you ask me.

Liquid really was an extremely popular character back in 1998. While he seems shallow now, keep in mind Metal Gear Solid was a story-based game released at a time when 'blast all the bad guys' was the zenith of plot in video games.

(Gotta get that zenith in there one more time.)
I suppose so, but he's had so many games to fix it. Hell, he did so with Gas Snake, though his charisma wasn't nearly as high so he's seen as the worse of the two (when in fact his character is WAY better). I'd like to see them do more with Solidus, considering he is THE clone that was supposed to be Big Boss the most. And if they remade him in HD, he'd look like the one we all know and love.
