Serious / Pentagon ends transgender ban
« on: June 30, 2016, 01:19:03 PM »
http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/30/politics/transgender-ban-lifted-us-military/index.html

Quote
The Pentagon said Thursday it was ending the ban on transgender people being able to serve openly in the U.S. military.

The announcement -- which removes one of the last barriers to military service by any individual -- was made by Defense Secretary Ash Carter, who had been studying the issue for almost a year. The decision comes as the military has witnessed major changes in the role of women and the inclusion of gays, lesbians and bisexual service members in recent years.

It's ALL OVER, lads.

When you're feeling really shitty given IRL events, how do you cheer yourself up. Been mulling this over a few days now, and I rarely (if ever) have asked any of you for help.

Gaming / Post a video/pic of your Fallout 4 settlements
« on: June 18, 2016, 07:31:37 AM »
I know this can probably go in the Fallout thread, but I thought I'd funnel it all in here. I always liked Settlement stuff since it let the user be rather creative in a Minecraft esc way, but without all the autism DLC tagged along with it.

So post your stuff and let's see your skillz.

Gaming / Fallout 3 talk. 2ndClass, get in here
« on: June 13, 2016, 04:37:11 PM »
Verb and Tru told me to make this my own thread, so now that I got free time I can continue from last night.

Quote
Yeah, your only reason was "it's an unneccesary change". I actually gave reasons why it made Fallout 2 and the character of Myron retroactively better.
I disagree with those reasons though. I think it's better that a guy makes a drug in a world where there is a bunch of crap going on, to capitalize on their troubles. It makes him dirt.

Quote
Yep, after making a huge walk from Lost Hills to The Pitt to DC, seeing countless horrors along the way and dying wastelanders who he had to ignore out of some old book, it's completely unreasonable for Elder Lyons to try to be more compassionate and helpful to the residents of the East Coast when he eventually settled there. It's completely unreasonable for the diehard BoS members to hate him for that, and break off to remain true to the actual BoS. Totally doesn't have any story value or interesting concept behind it. It would be TOTALLY better for Lyons to be another faceless, generic BoS operative who's diehard to the Codex and doesn't change a thing about their organization, and for that facelessness to carry into the F4 BoS.

The horrors of dynamic storytelling, where experiences change people, and they have to deal with the repercussions of that change.
My argument is that they don't capitalize on that story at all. They talk about it a bit in The Pitt DLC I believe, and that's it. My issue too is that they don't like Ghouls, yet they do nothing to show it. My issue is that they have this faction that split off and they have an uneasy cold/civil war, yet nothing goes on about it.

They completely shove down your throat that the DC BoS are the good guys, and you have to be with them whether you like it or not. There is nothing dynamic about the, and goes entirely against what the BoS should be. Even if they SHOULD be good guys, they should expose some of the flaws they have, rather than just give one line to them and that be that.

Quote
Uh, yeah. If you find something in a container, it's there.
I have to disagree with this if it's randomized. Unless it's specifically there for a story purpose, or actually placed there purposely without the random loot being into play, then yes I would agree.

Quote
Except the BoS in F4 was a blend of their original goals and Lyons' influence, as seen by the fact that they recruit wastelanders and have a tolerance for sane ghouls. EC BoS has never returned to the exclusion and bigotry that the WC BoS had.
Actually not every chapter of the BoS on the West Coast was isolated like that, considering you can join them in Fallout 1 (and Tactics).

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Become_an_initiate

In Fallout 2 you can't join them, so they're more like the Mojave Chapter, but not all of them are like that.

My main gripe with all of this, like one of you said in the other thread, is how they portray them in Fallout 3. As in, the writing was so bad they fail to take advantage of any of it. I guess I'm walking back when I say that, but other posts made me more or less realize some of the things they did lore wise with them weren't bad. Just how they executed it. I like the concept of the split in FO3, don't get me wrong. I like that one Elder has a sense of humanity, and other hard liners don't so they split. And like it was said (and something I never considered), it'd have been MUCH better if the Outcast replaced the Enclave in Fallout 3. I feel like there was so much potential for that civil war, and a mixture of humanity and some lingering hard liners, but it was squandered by somehow shoehorning the Enclave there instead, and forcing you to go with the BoS (if you want to complete the story properly at least).

I give them credit for fixing them in Fallout 4 though. In fact I'd argue THAT Brotherhood is even more batshit scary than the ones on the West Coast. They turned into Crusaders more than anything, where as the original BoS was more so just Army Guys who were weary and horde happy.

Serious / So about this whole Cincinnati Zoo thing
« on: May 30, 2016, 02:35:04 PM »
I think we've all caught wind of it within the last 2 days. If not, just check any news site. They had the Gorilla in their zoo for 17 years I believe.

What are your guys's opinions on how it was handled? Who do you think is to blame?

Obviously for me, I think the blame lies with the neglectful parents who somehow let their kid through the barrier.

It's just a shame it came to that. They planned to set him up for breeding too, so it's sad it all came down to that for such an endangered species.

The Flood / NYCFC vs NY Red Bulls
« on: May 21, 2016, 03:25:41 PM »
Not that anyone cares about MLS, I just find it funny for 2 reasons.

1. MLS is trying so hard to make this a rivalry akin to Man City/United when it's just only a year old

2. Red Bulls blew them out every time like year in their 3 matches, and they just scored right now to be up 0-3 before the half

Serious / 9/11 bill passes US Senate despite Saudi "warning"
« on: May 17, 2016, 04:17:26 PM »
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-36316117

Quote
The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA) now moves to the House of Representatives.
Saudi Arabia's foreign minister warned that the move could cause his government to withdraw US investments. President Barack Obama said he will veto the bill, but a Democratic senator is "confident" he'd be overruled. If it became law the legislation would allow victims' families to sue any member of the government of Saudi Arabia thought to have played a role in any element of the attack..

I'm glad this is passing. I'm kind of tired of the US just giving Saudi "I give oil" Arabia a free pass on all the crap they give us, along with human rights in general. I hope Congress overturns the veto.

Your thoughts?

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-36299692

I thought this was very interesting, considering a lot of countries that have revolutions with the current government still in play, tend to celebrate it (more so communist/cult of personality like countries).

I think it shows China doesn't really feel they need to owe to what they were founded upon, considering how batshit crazy Mao Zedong was, and just how different the country is today than it was then. And also, ya know, the mass murder.

The Flood / Quick question to any history buffs out there
« on: May 15, 2016, 12:39:26 AM »
You guys know the Frankish Kingdom and how it eventually became France right? Well I know Charlameme was crowned the first King of the Franks, but the Holy Roman Empire also sees him as that. So my question is basically, did the Franks split off in two factions over time? One being obviously France, and the other being the HRE?

If so, they have to easily be one of the most influential Barbarian factions out of there. But yeah, I couldn't find an answer on google.

The Flood / Leicester City wins EPL Title
« on: May 02, 2016, 04:39:32 PM »

First time in their 132 year history they've finished on the top flight. Finished just above relegation last year (they were two leagues lower just 7 years ago).

5000-1 Odds to win.

for anyone who cares about sports (I know), here are some other comparisons to put in perspective

1980 US Olympic Hockey Team: 1000-1

1999 St. Louis Rams SB title: 300-1

James Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson: 49-1

I love underdog stories. Shows money isn't all that matters in sports.

The Flood / So why does Spiderman keep rebooting?
« on: April 01, 2016, 02:01:26 AM »
I get they rebooted it after the Tobey Maguire thing, but why are they ALREADY rebooting it again after the 2nd one just came out in 2014? It seems the continuity is rather... not apparent with this, and I swear if it's another origin story I will kill myself.

Thor seems to be holding up fine with this, along with Batman spanning 3 films across almost a decade with Christopher Nolan/Bale. Just seems silly how they always seem to handle Spiderman like... the worst of the Marvel movies.

Serious / How is the US so effective at assimilating immigrants?
« on: March 24, 2016, 09:44:00 AM »
So due to the recent tragic event, it raised the concerns and questions of Europe's increasing glaring issue at the failure to assimilate its immigrants into their culture/ways of thinking. If you're for or against that, I dunno, but that's beside the point.

My point is, how is the US so effective at it. The Muslim population (and others in general) in the US has been shown time and time again to be culturally assimilated into the US lifestyle, and way of thinking. Why is that? What is the driving factor that does such a thing? Is it the American Dream? Many immigrants still clearly believe in that, though the domestic population would probably argue otherwise at this point.

Anyone have any accurate guesses or knowledge they'd like to share? I just find it really interesting is all, so if I made a mistake, apologies.
