The Flood / Is the extended editions of LoTR/Hobbit worth watching?
« on: December 18, 2015, 04:45:09 AM »
I've already seen the original trilogy (someone brought it up earlier, hence the other thread and then I decided for this), but is it worth watching again for the extended edition? Any important stuff/extra exposition? Never seen any of the Hobbit's, so I'm just downloading the extended of that.

The only drawback is like... each movie is 4 hours long because of that. That's Moses the old 50's movie long.

Personally I liked the Fellowship of The Ring the most. I know it doesn't have the massive battles like the 3rd one, or the introduction to many cool new people like the 2nd, but for some reason just the sense of a grand adventure starting has always been something really cool to me.

And just a lot of the settings I preferred too. That cave (forgive me, I forget the name) they had to pass through under the mountains had to be some of the most intense stuff to me.

Who will be watching? Probably too early to make this thread.

Will the pundits attack Trump on his Muslim comments? It seems everyone who slams Trump tends to fall in polling's, where as Ted Cruz simply said "I disagree" and is now 2nd or 3rd behind Trump.

Weird how that works.

Finally stable frames, and 60 frames looks great in this along with the combat that'll be going on. PS3 averaged around 20-30, often times dropping to 15 in big fights.

It looks so pretty, and mods will just make it more Berserk (and pretty) than it already is, seeing as it's a giant love letter to the manga. Can't wait.

I didn't give it a go for a while due to other things in life, and it seems I made the right decision since the Directors Cut (better graphics, more voice acting, balances, additional stuff, etc) came out last month.

Any tips other than anything Super Bunnyhop said in his video (invest in INT, medic, surgery, name players for specializations)?

Also, I did play a little bit for like an hour, and just played some more now before realizing I wasn't playing Directors Cut (I hope I don't have to type out their bios again), and I love how much it's just like Fallout 1 and 2 in the AP/weapon sense, and how they literally call you the Desert Rangers.

Seeing all the videos a few days later of all the fat people fighting over the nearest TV and people rushing in and running over each other.

I honestly do look forward to this every year. Am I a bad person for that or do I just like seeing what a simple price drop does to peoples mindsets?

First off, sorry for making another Fallout thread. I know there are an abundance of them. Still, I'm sick, didn't get much sleep, and sitting in showers and letting your thoughts gather is always fun when it's not about suicide. Anyway, here you go.

Spoiler
The main issue is that in games where it tries to push for a world that feels alive such as Fallout, Elder Scrolls, an MMO, whatever, is how to keep the player immersed in the universe. After all, that's why everyone stays glued to the games. It's a world you're completely immersed and surrounded in, from the music, to the characters, to the weather.

Anything to abruptly rip you from that and make you realize you're just sitting in front of a screen with a controller/mouse in your hand (figuratively speaking) is what these kind of games try to avoid. Naturally, things like textures freaking out, glitches, and various other small things can do that to us. Even in games like Call of Duty where you're in this action packed scene, one small mess up can completely mess up the flow of the action, pacing, and intensity in which the devs intended you to get in.

Fallout 4's problem with that (along with the glitches) rounds back to your personality with your character. Now before you freak out, let me explain. It seems to me that Fallout 4's writing staff had the mindset that your first run through was going to be your ONLY run through. They pushed for the very small scale narrative (which in my opinion hurts them significantly) in such a large and engaging world, and it worked somewhat. My first playthrough I played the mother looking for her son, and played into her personality like the game intended me to, and it wasn't bad.

The tone of the character was good, the writing wasn't too terrible, the characters meshed well for the most part and offered sympathy, etc. And when you finally find your son and you actually feel emotional about it, it all comes together, and it feels rewarding.

However what I think they failed to take into account, is that Fallout games are never meant for one single playthrough. No one gets 200+ hours from a Fallout game on one playthrough on the base game. You get it from doing multiple playthroughs, different builds, and different personalities. In Fallout New Vegas you could either be a lone wolf who screws everyone over, supports a faction, and everything in between.

Heck even in Fallout 3, despite it being so black and white in choices, you could decide from the early hours what kind of character you wanted to be. Did you want to be a good person and save Megaton, or did you want to completely nuke it? Did you want to actually work hard on the Wasteland Survival Guide, even begrudgingly so, or did you want to completely lie and fuck everyone over? Did you want to save the wasteland with pure water, or did you want to (for whatever reason) put the FEV in it?

These kinds of things helped fit what an RPG is, and that is a ROLE PLAYING game.

Fallout 4's problem is that I can't be anything other than a parent looking for a child. I can't be a staunch supporter of the Brotherhood, cold hearted and ruthless, without it suddenly coming to a grinding halt when my character gets emotional over their spouse or son. I cannot be a drug addict looking for that next fix without people reminding me of my family, or what I need to do as a general of the Minutemen.

And that's the problem with Fallout 4. It never accounts for that 2nd playthrough, and even when you try it you're forced to a halt, and it completely throws me out of the universe I am in and makes me realize that despite being able to free roam, I am still being guided by an invisible hand on an invisible railroad. It comes to a point where during the main quest you are forced to tell them about your son/spouse, even if you try to deny it. If you try and say you don't want to talk about it, the NPC says they need to know everything, and then your character gets emotional and sad.

And that is the problem with Fallout 4's immersion. Despite the amazing ost, solid gunplay, huge world, settlement building, and sidequests, you will always be reminded you are a parent looking for their child, and that you are good natured at heart. And no amount of snarky or annoyed options in the dialogue will every derail you from that invisible railroad.

I'd like to still mention, that like the Angry Joe review said (I know, don't hate me), the game is better than the sum of its parts. And for that reason, I know I'll continue to love this game and know amazing mods can't come soon enough.

Before you say "who gives a fuck? No one cares." Well I do. I care because this is the website that has actually proven to kill friendships, at least for some of us. XSEAN was a really long time B.net member. Okay he liked furies, so what? Is this how you treat him? He hasn't done jack fucking shit and already you make fun of him. He's pretty much the new Deci to you guys, and you wanna know something? The same can be said with Deci. The same fucking shit all over again.

I'm hoping one day more than enough people actually silently leave the site due to the amount of cancer posting like this being a thing, picking on users for what? You're own personal amusement? I'm sorry but that's fucking sad. This isn't high school anymore, if you keep this shit up with a lot of actual good people, you'll be losing respect very fast, just like how you've already lost mine months ago. Maybe this is what you want, maybe you want people to think less of you, and they will.

Grow the fuck up. This website doesn't have to be a fucking hugbox but it doesn't have to be an ass grader either, which is currently what it is, that's why so many people end up "butthurt."

Gaming / Luci's Fallout 4 review *Spoiler free*
« on: November 22, 2015, 03:00:12 AM »
So I've sank about 83 hours or so into this. Beat the story and all that. Overall, it's a fun game. Writing was better than FO3, as were companions. I'm glad the Brotherhood was actually handled properly too. Actually, I feel like Bethesda's main writing went into them. Every other faction falls short. However the story itself isn't nearly as bad as 3's, like I've said. It actually makes sense, there are twists here and there that I thought were somewhat clever, and the set piece moments are really cool, like the Brotherhoods arrival via the massive ship, and how the music kicks in when it happens.

However, my main issue is just how bad the dialogue is, and how they limit you down only a few paths. As in, you can never say no, or be a bad guy. Where is the CHOICE? Choice choice choice, THERE IS NO CHOICE! It's you saying no but people around you still saying yes. You've all seen the picture with the dialogue and what not, so I don't need to explain this any more. The fact that New Vegas within the first 30 mins gives you the option to help the people that saved you, or turn thug and kill them all right away, really speaks to how it actually gives you CHOICES!

Moving on, I think having the "unique" weapons drop from legendary enemies was a bad idea, because it means they're very generic, boring and not very exciting for the most part. I got a DB shotgun that deals some radiation damage. Whoopdy doo. I kill people in one shot with it anyway, why is that a thing that matters? Instead, these types of weapons should have dropped from legendary enemies, but then also have actual unique weapons to find like NV.

And make them ACTUALLY unique. Like NV. I also think NV had the better writing, better factions, and better design overall. I guess you can attribute that to the fact they had every other Fallout game to work lore off of for their universe, and it was more direct since it was next to FO 1 and 2, but still. The humor they managed to sink into NV and how it actually felt more post apocalyptic than 4 does, really stands out. Note I say POST apocalyptic. As in, it's already happened and settlements are already happening and things are moving on. It always bothered me in 3 (and 4 but not as much) how it felt like the bombs just dropped less than 5 years ago.

The fact there isn't a realism mode kind of kills it for me too. They set up everything, from cooking, cover system, stims, rads, whatever, to be survival based. However it seems like they just forgot to turn the option on in game. I know mods will easily handle this (along with a lot of things like they have already), and they'd make it better than even the base realism if they threw it in, but still. Part of a sequel should be improving on aspects the past game had in the same series. Bethesda knows they have huge hardcore fans following this series, but I sometimes feel they just forget about it to always appeal to the casual masses. However that wouldn't matter because it's an OPTION like Survival would be. It just baffles my mind.

It also bothers me how much the narrative in the beginning just limits what you can do in a game that says it's an "RPG". It's kind of hard to make up my own backstory when my girl is a lawyer, and my guy in the war and they're an entire family. It just feels like they did a character creation, then gave you the finished character and only let you alter very small things. I mean, the personalities for each person are already set. KINDA HARD to do what you want when you're a family man back from the war, or a hard working woman who turned lawyer.

I get the narrative they were trying to push on you, but I don't think it matches in this game. First time through sure, but 2nd and 3rd time through? It just limits you. I enjoyed New Vegas's character because of how ambiguous their past was. You could decide many things from the dialogue too, whether it be if you had parents, were in the West, or other various things. The dialogue too was far more diverse.

Overall, I'd give it a 7/10 probably. Is it worth the $60? Absolutely, it's a Fallout game. As much as I shat on the game compared to arguably one of the strongest in the series, I did enjoy quite a bit to it. I praise the customization the game gives you, and building settlements just sinks hours into this. I also am glad they fixed the gunplay. It's not "amazing", but I mean, it's your run in the mill shooter with it. I also love how Power Armor actually FEELS like Power Armor now. That had to be one of the highlights for me. The perk system isn't as bad as I thought it'd be too. It's different, but I'm pretty indifferent. While the perks aren't the same, the points sank between 15, 50, 75, and 100 was meaningless in the old games too. So I mean... give and take.

However that's really about the only "new" stuff they've done with this. Everything else relies on things they've already done with 3, and companions are a step BACK (both in how effective they are in combat and what you can do with them) from New Vegas. I apologize if the review is too short or not as in depth as maybe Verbs. It's 4 AM, so sorry if the pacing is off as well. However I intentionally avoided talking about the story because I know it's still new and don't want to dare spoil it for anyone.

My final thought is, the more I play Fallout 4, the more I am reminded why New Vegas is the better game, even without the improved gun play. I'm more than certain if Obsidian got their hands on the new Fallout with this modified engine and gun play and all that, it'd be better in every aspect.

P.S. I hate how many Pipe Pistols there are. I get more excited opening an expert chest and seeing an aluminum can because I know it can DO SOMETHING. I don't need a fucking Pipe Pistol. And why are they in PRE-WAR CHESTS when the lore (and if you have eyes) clearly says they're post-war guns scavenged all around?

Edit: I wouldn't add this but Cindy helped me articulate what I wanted to say. You have a personality pre-established in game, but the only thing given to you is the tone in which you say it. You're either really nice, or snarky about it but still do it. And yes, I hit f5 way too much in convo's because of "sarcastic", and a lot of dialogue really.

Also, Ron Pealman not being there broke my heart. He's been there since the original and they scrap him.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/09/us/texas-campus-carry-law/index.html

Long story short, this bill allows people to walk onto campus with a concealed gun when they meet the requirements. The irony is this

Quote
The bill many know as the "campus carry" law is scheduled to go into effect August 1, 2016, the 50-year anniversary of the UT Tower sniper shooting, one of the first mass murders on a college campus in America.

What are your thoughts on this? One of the professors brought up a point we talked about last year in my English class in that "You will stymie discussion -- heated discussion in areas -- in the classroom." which I think is a good point (we brought up that you wouldn't be so bold to argue with someone if they were carrying a gun).

Anyway, my personal opinion is it's a bad fucking idea. I'm just waiting for this to blow up (no pun intended) in the bills face. America really is just getting weird with guns. I'd honestly drop out of my college if that bill passed here.

The Teuton theme
YouTube

Explanation

I'm bored and I want to try something here. I like these kinda games for more than a few reasons. Empire building always gets me going, along with managing political relations in them. I dig games like Civilization, and Total War as well, which makes the battles. Anyway, my goal (or experiment if anyone gives enough fucks) is for us to collectively choose a faction and you guys help me make some decisions here.

The goal's for each nation will differ. I don't want every single one to be some huge empire spanning across the world, that would be unrealistic and borish to me. Kinda getting in a RP mood for it. So I narrowed down some factions to choose from, and I want your guys's help picking one together, so we can do well.

A rule of note: I have a faction mod on (it's really cool) and it basically takes place in the late 500's would be my guess. Rome has long since fallen, and the Byzantines do not hold the land they used to (probably not historically accurate, whatever).

Tuetons

The Germans are angry and they are ready to teach the world of Christ and his glory, even if it must be in blood. The goal of this faction would be to purge those who are non believers, and teach the ways of christ.

Goal: This one I'm not so sure. Possibly make my way towards Britannia (while pillaging and killing of course), and establish a great Christian nation in Saber land

Here's seeing how this goes.

Edit: Naturally as I play/update you, I will present you shit that happened as well as what options to do. Then we can decide together, so we either succeed or die together. You DON'T need to be an expert or know shit about this game to participate. I'll present things in a simple enough manner.

————-

*UPDATE*

Teutons win

Now that we have a faction, I will start the game (probably tomorrow) and present some options we can decide together what to do. Let's teach these filthy barbarians (and later Persians maybe?) that Christ is the one true god.

Note: If you're not regularly following, I'll link my update entries in the OP for easy access.

Update 1
Song for the post

YouTube

So like I said in the OP, our objective was to get our of the middle of everyone (you start around northern Poland). We only have one unit, no settlement, and need to move away from the ever aggressive Huns. So we made our way to THE UNITED KINGDOM where we will plant our seed~ in the heart of those filthy Britons, and show them the way of Christ. If we can secure the entire region (or at least, let's say, the north), we don't have to worry about attacks on all sides.

Speaking of which...

Right out of the gate, the Vandal Kingdom is the ONLY faction I've met that actually see's me favorably. Their strength rating is also 3rd best, so you know what that means. After a turn or two, I secured a non-aggression pact with them. A bit later, they countered my offer for going to war with the Picts (more on that in a sec), with a marriage proposal.

Marrying one of his women is great to increase our closeness, and starting off I'm going to need as much help as I can get. I'll be looking to keep these guys as my allies for a long long time, unless they drag me into some war. They have a trade agreement with the Persians though (I think they're the strongest in the game), so I shouldn't have to worry about that.

So anyway, I invade mid Britannia and take the Picts declare war on me. I need a place to settle and defend against large numbers, so I invade one of the Caledonians unwalled cities and take it easily (however this makes me go to war with them as well). Naturally, both are trying to attack me.

The Picts and Calashits both team up to try and take me out and silence Christ. This must not be allowed to happen. To battle we go!

Battle
The great thing about cities? Choke points. When you're outnumbered, a single few units can pull a 300 and route waves of enemies. The Calashits tried to invade me from the East, and the Picts from the West.

I don't think the Caledonians expected such a slaughter, and by only two of my units. They had around 7. Again, choke points will be KEY for us when defending early on until we can push back.

Another choke point managed to tie the Picts up and me flank them to route them. At this point the units are about to break off and flee.

Which is what they did. After losing so many men, they threw their arms down and ran (A SHAMEFER DISPRAY!) like the stupid barbarians they are.

Or rather, they tried to run. The Caledonians lost a top general, and the Picts (as pictured above) lost their faction LEADER. Big mistake for them, as the balance will easily tip in my favor now.

They gave me a "close" victory (probably because I lost a disposable unit or two) instead of an heroic one, but the numbers don't lie. It was a slaughter for then.

And like I said, they lost their leader.

A few sides notes apart from me directly is that the Vandals decided to join me in war with the Picts, but they're all the way in Africa, sooo... I doubt they'll be of much help.

The Huns are also doing what they do best, and that is declaring war on everyone and burning shit.

Now for our decisions. My FIRST question is this.

This man is trying to sell a relic that apparently drowned a saint of ours 13 times (how do you drown 13 times? Unless this man is some wizard, you only drown once. Idiots), and wants us to take the bribe. Do we do so and take this holy relic? Or do we expose him of him crimes (read what it says lol)?

Lastly

I'll post a map update every entry to see us slowly expanding. Now, do we go up north and secure our northern borders against the weakened Picts who lost their leader? Or do we push south against the Caledonians? The latter will be the harder of the two options, and still leaves me vulnerable to the north however, but this is your guys's decisions! Like I said, we rise together and fall together.

Update 2
Here with a 2nd update. Not as much as the first, but still some important things.

The first thing to happen is I actually managed to get on more friendly terms with people. Not a bunch of red faces now, but people who are more or less indifferent to me, and slowly liking me more. I managed to secure a non-aggression pact with the FILTHY FRENCH, so that's good.

However the thorn at my side was securing the north I can't fight a war on two fronts just yet, so I need to do something.

Battle 1

With siege equipment in tow, I was ready to scale the walls and break the gates of these backwards barbarians.

They naturally sent all of their forces to meet my men. The battle would be won or lost depending on this skirmish.

However the problem was they didn't hold to a single chokepoint (gotta love the AI) but instead tried to meet me on multiple fronts. This proved to be their downfall, as their forces were quickly outflanked and routed, allowing me to push in. I killed their general in the process here too, which sent a moral shock to their entire army

(Note: there are 3 tiers of units, tier 1 being early/low grade units, tier 3 being top end. If a general dies in the midst of battle, the tier 1 will basically break easily with any sign of wrong doings, tier 2 will be shaken, and tier 3 will still fight on. These were tier 1, and usually make up the bulk of Barbarian armies)

In the end I managed to surround the last unit with pikemen holding them on one end, and infantry and cavalry destroying them from the back.

Naturally, a decisive victory for me.

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GO- I mean Christ...

Bye bye Picts. You won't be missed.

An interesting thing to note as I pushed further south to wipe out the Caledonians, was the title boy was born. They play a cool cutscene too (give it a watch).

Attila is born. Aka: Huns are now overpowered as shit for a while. Good thing I got out of there.

Nothing to note here. Simply auto-resolved the attacks from the Caledonians and took them out. EZ-PZ

And now here is the update of the map. As you can see, the entire North is ours, and we now control 1/3rd of Britannia Inferior (smug Rome names much?). The faction below me is the Geats (who somehow sailed all the way from Viking land over to there and got a city...), and below that is the Britain faction. Both are pretty even with me on strength level, but to the west is the FILTHY Irish (Ebdanians). They're at war with... all of them lol, so I think we'll attack them next as the logical choice.

And here is a random video for your pleasure.

The injury will see him side-lined for between seven and eight weeks.
