it is if the intended purpose of the mechanic is overshadowed by its negatives
"muh sense of danger" is vastly overshadowed by the glaring, GLARING negatives
It serves to make bonfires that much more relieving. It's not like the game has enemies that scour the world looking for you, and you don't play online, so just walk backwards a bit.
Bonfires would still be relieving. Pausing doesn't allow you to save, just stop the game if something happens you need to take care of.

idk people like to act like Dark Souls is the holy grail of gaming. It's a great game but just like everything else it has its flaws. Maybe because it brought back that level of difficulty older games used to have, I don't know. But it's like there's something wrong with the Dark Souls community. Like a collective nostalgia.
