why isn't doing this more widespread? if developer intent doesn't matter, and you just want to piss on their art, why not just go ALL the way and make the halo 4 you wanted to see instead of the one that 343 wanted you to see
That's kind of what pubg is, but mods aren't always better than what the developer made. At the end of the day it's people making games. If a bunch of dudes could make a better Halo 4 than 343i I'd pay them no problem. If somebody takes a mod and makes it a full game, they created a game. Why shouldn't they be paid?

I mean if they have permission from the company and give them a cut (since they're using their game) obviously. I still don't understand why you think a game is static. The fact that updates and DLC exist is proof they aren't. I can understand if you're part of the dev team and the game is a piece of shit, but at least it's your piece of shit, not some modded travesty of your creation. I get that. But at the same time, you're charging people up to $60, whereas people can see a painting for free. The consumer's opinion matters and if your game is made better by mods it's on you as a developer to add in features to your next game that the fans added in with mods. It's a healthy relationship.

Mods modify the existing content of a game. Hence the word mod. It's not new tech (mostly), or a new engine, or anything that has the amount of money a new game would have pumped into it.
Otherwise it wouldn't be called a mod. That's why.

New tech allows for better gameplay, so I don't see how mods change that. I'd still buy the new game.

when you use mods, there's a sense of untainted purity that you just lose forever
you people look at gaming more as an entertainment medium, whereas i view it in the way that challenger described it—as a static painting that shouldn't be touched by anybody but the original artist
not only do you get all the developers' intentions, you also get their mistakes, which i consider an essential part of the overall experience—if all you're looking to have is fun, then you care less about gaming as an art form than i do

Modders are the #1 reason why I would never make a game. It would suck to make a piece of art only for people to piss all over it. It's an insult. Just because other companies don't care doesn't mean that I can't for them.
That's the thing about games, they're not static art like a painting is. They can change and improve, that's where modding comes in.

I don't even see how you would do it, the company doesn't care and more often than not encourages mods.
