Well its subjective to where you live. I dunno about the US but the size of the Hex (College/Uni loans) debts are astronomical here in Australia and you're basically in debt for half of your working life.
Plus it worked for me, but thats not to say its the same for everyone.
There’s nothing subjective about retail. It’s one thing to say fuck college and take a trade just to make money, but to condemn a man to a life of working in retail is practically a prison sentence. I don’t say this because I look down on people who work retail jobs. But to willingly do it and say education is a complete waste of time is a grotesquely ignorant thing to say.

writing, nothing else
journalism is out of the question, i don't want to work for anyone and i don't want deadlines
ideally i'd be a novelist writing for the sake of the art itself, not to get money—but i'd have a patreon or something, so if i were to actually manage to build some sort of following, people could support me that way if they're interested
that's the dream, but i'm not in a position right now where that's the easiest thing in the world to just do

You can still get a trade dude. You’re a smart guy you’ll get through it in a couple years and you can be making bank your first year of employment and start to pay your debts off. It’s not all doom and gloom. You may not like the field that much, but there has to be something interesting enough. You’re young, healthy, and you got your family. It’s easy to take all this for granted, but try not to.
