Horses have been trained for war, they're quite smart and brave. If we put the effort in I think we could train guard horses. I considered the dodging, but when you have two or three horses coming at you I think it would be less effective. Besides which you have the panic factor that kicks in when these beasts come for you, making your thoughts and movements less considered.
I'm aware, but even some war horses would get frightened. Even if you don't have weapons in this scenario, people who are trying to get past guard animals usually do. You can drop three horses with a handgun with ease, and there's no way they'd stop you if you're using a shotgun or rifle of some sort. With three dogs, you could only kill one at best and you'd have two of them ripping your neck and arm apart. Horses just don't cut it as guards.

I don't know. I think you could dodge a horse pretty easily if you goad him into charging. And depending on the terrain and what type of cover there is you could maybe even sneak past a horse. They're just not really guard animals, they don't really have the instinct in the first place. Are you weaponless in this scenario? Or do you not want to hurt the animal?

I was doing some thinking the other day. Evolution is a constant thing, and if you were to take a Human being from today, stuff him or her into a time machine, and say, jump them ahead 40-50 thousand years or so, taking into account we're still around by then, the species that we know as Humans he or she will meet will be completely alien, in appearance, and possibly intelligence.
So, down to the brass tacks of things, I was thinking, let's assume that we are around for another 40-50 thousand years, hell, even longer than that, and we maintain a presence on Earth. Let's say, that our divergent relatives in our family tree, other primates, are also around all the way up until this time. Could the potential exist to see a second sapient species rise on our world through natural evolution?
And in that regard, would we ourselves be evolved enough not abuse them?
Most likely. We'd probably help more advanced apes out, seeing how we do already. Poaching and such wouldn't be as much of a problem or wouldn't be a problem at all if we've figured out how to co-exist for another 50 thousand years.

They'd have to be well-fed to operate and if that's the case- if their guardianship is based on loyalty instead of viciousness- could they be bribed?
It doesn't really matter since a horse wouldn't be able to stop you in the first place, even if you're unarmed. And a well trained guard dog only eats from his handler and nobody else, so you'd have a difficult time bribing a well trained guard dog in the first place. And if it's just one of those really vicious dogs that's been brought up badly and starved, you still don't have much of a window to infiltrate a house/compund because they eat FAST and then they'll be right on your ass. Unless you put tranquilizers in the meat.
