That's really not what competence refers to. When a competence issue prevents you from communicating, it's more because you don't fully grasp the language or have mastery in the laws of its dialogue. Particularly having to do with the laws and particulars of dialogue.
A good word might be commonality though, if you're inferring that we have little to talk about.

I thought we went over this before, that popularizing these mass killers helps the other guy to jump in because he/she sees the possibilities available and can jump to that decision because of them.
