if civillians are allowed guns to defend themselves, criminals will get them too, as well as weapons not available to a law abiding citizen.

Explain how. If you don't sell them anywhere but gun stores and have a million checks run, where do criminals get a gun?

There is always the worry of somebody acquiring a large amount then selling them illegally, but that's why I advocate for one pistol and one rifle ownership. And if the gun companies themselves were monitored properly, they wouldn't be able to get away with selling them to shady people.

If that were done, it could work pretty well.
