D1 endgame was never geared towards solo play, though. It's no surprise that this isn't either. As much as I'd love the ability to play the entire game solo and offline, that's just not what Destiny is about.
They've obviously made an effort to introduce matchmaking to endgame activities intended for solo players, through the introduction of guided games, but it's extremely poorly executed. Solo players are essentially locked out of 90% of the games content
