So I went and looked at the disk case that I got with 8.1 over a year ago to see which version of 8.1 I'm ultimately going to have to buy on Newegg, but it just says "Windows 8.1 Full Version" in a dark blue case. I don't want to spend over a hundred bucks on a copy of 8.1 only to put in the product key and be told "Not the right version LOL". Does anyone know which version of 8.1 I have now?
Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System. That will tell you what edition you have. Also, fuck newegg for that. Don't buy another copy of the OS all over again, you can just buy the product key from those 3rd party product key websites, its how I got Windows 10 Enterprise for dirt cheap compared to the volume license. I'll eventually upgrade to 10 for directx 12, but I'm going to stay on 7 for as long as possible.
MS is basically doing the same thing they did with vista right now though. Releasing exclusive features and programs that could easily be done on an earlier OS to try and get people to switch over.

Like I said in my thread. You can use XP if you'd like, but at the very lest make sure its with the full service pack upgrades and Avast as your anti virus since they will continue to support XP for awhile, a 64 for bit machine with XP is even better, more power to you. Otherwise, if you're chicken from Windows 10, Windows 7 is your next bet, I know what the patch is called to avoid getting the Windows 10 update, you just have to not install it under Windows Update. I have no problems with Windows 10, so OP and everyone else is really paranoid for no good reason, because MS can get all your shit if they wanted to on the other OSes even. Dead sure of that.

You really need to read my thread. Some of you guys still use Windows 8 or 8.1 even due to the irrational fear of MS and the NSA collecting all your data and whatnot. Guess what? You're already fucked. Every Windows OS is closed source, you don't know what kind of proprietary code MS can have in their previous versions even, heck we don't even see what's being processed in the background at least 98% of the time, unless its a program that we opened, so if you're that paranoid about it I would start using Linux Mint because with that you can not only see the open source code, you have complete access to it and can change it even, but Linux is not Windows, and if you don't want Linux... get a Mac... Which is also closed source but should calm your paranoia a bit.

I don't know if OS's and forum architecture are the right examples of being technologically outdated. By their nature, they can't really evolve much in terms of the GUI. if things evolved in terms of the natural rate, instead of the accepted rate, no one would be able to use anything. We would spend all of our time relearning everything we use on a day to day basis.
A better example would be the algorithms going on behind the scenes.
