The Flood / Re: What can I do to change?
« on: January 26, 2017, 04:18:23 AM »
When you figure out how to break this cycle, then things will change for the better.

You leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong, you leave, you come back, you post, you get triggered, you ask what went wrong

You get where this is going?

Either stop getting triggered by people trying to wind you up, or listen to this part (stage 4) and try to make a change.

I don't understand what you guys see in Verbatim. He's just an asshole that pretends to know what he's talking about.

I don't see anything in him.

I just see a flaw in how moderation was practiced and he shouldn't be banned for it. Doesn't matter who it was, the ban was bullshit and I don't want others that I actually enjoy their presence to be banned under similar circumstances.

3 months for that is excessive. I mean I understand he has been a fire demon recently, but he really hates Trump, and now he is his president regardless of his awesome avatar and "not my president" custom title. I appreciate the memes man.
It's not just Trump, although that is a big part. Sometime's people have irl issues that translate into their attitudes. Everybody comes down on hard times, but that doesn't excuse anything. Verb did need to have a cooldown period, but two months (reduced to 1) is still too long without a sufficient ban/warn history to support it.

What? The guy was perma'd a while back. How's that for a sufficient ban history?
Bans are typically handled with increasing lengths with continued rule breaking. First warnings, then a lite ban, then a day or three, then a week, etc. Accord to Psy, this past year he had one ban and a couple of warnings that would have added up to two days. Even taking the specific instance that resulted in the ban, anything more than two weeks is excessive.

Two weeks isn't enough if you're being that much of a prick, sorry.
People shouldn't be banned on the basis of being mean. I'm sorry, but if the moderation of the case was handled consistently with literally every other case then there wouldn't be a problem; but taking a bunch of little snarks that aren't worth even half of a warning alone and trying to justify a 1-2 month ban for it is ridiculous.

Psy only took into account the past year. That's a mistake if you ask me. Verb has a reputation of being quite unsettling, and apparently nothing changed.
So if a person behaves themselves for 12+ months, we should still ban them as if something they did 2 years ago was only yesterday?

Does that not seem just a little bit draconian?

I don't think so. Once you've been permabanned you have a reputation, that's just how it is. AND the perma was lifted. He was given a second chance and he blew it. That was his choice.
Except the perma was given on dodgy grounds in the first place, it was something he said off-site.
That's not to say what he said was by any means fine, but he didn't break the rules of sep7 by doing so.

I can already see the headlines tomorrow

'GET US OUT'

'A GREAT INJUSTICE FOR THE BRITISH PEOPLE'

'SAD!'

Thank god though, a smoother transition is much more preferable to a slamming of the brakes.
Tomorrow? The Daily Mail literally ran "yet again the elite show their contempt for Brexit voters! Supreme Court rules May CANNOT trigger Britain's departure from the EU without MP's approval as Remain Campaigners gloat" as their online headline this morning. Now it's something about "Remoaners" trying to thwart the exit which CANNOT be stopped.

Tabloid tier.

^This is the issue

The ban was disproportionate, the reason for it is justified but the length is not.

That's scarily good.

The amount of detail you can see on people that far away with a camera, wew.

It's fascinating just panning the crowds and looking at people's faces frozen in the second that the camera caught them as well.

It lends nothing to your credibility as someone who is meant to bridge the gap between administrative figures and those you work with in the press
And why exactly should he work with them again?

I assume points go down after a period of time? It's been a while since my only warning.
Yeah, forgot that part.
They decay over time back down to 0, I can't remember the timeframe though but it's whenever the orange symbol disappears from your nameplate.

Just because I piss off LC or any of the moderators a bit too much once doesn't warrant all my previous posts being scrutinised for being unruly and then being punished for all of them at once.

Shitty, aggressive, ban worthy posts don't lose their shitty aggressive ban worthiness over time. If it was just LC he pissed off, sure, one day would have been an acceptable timeout, but he's pissed off virtually everybody here at some point. Dickery should be a bannable offense, and consistent dickery warrants a longer ban.
If we ban dickery, the entire of the bloody site is gone.

Why didn't they get added up to two days?

Verb's ban history for the last 12 months prior to this ban has one day in it and a handful of warnings.

From the start of 2016, through to the start of 2017 he was banned for one day with enough warning points to add up to two days.

A week would have more than sufficed to get the point across.
The system is a bit complicated to explain by the numbers, but I'll try to.

The warning system on here is done by numbers usually in increments of 5.

A warning is anywhere between 0 and 29, a lite-ban (where you cannot post) is 30 points or higher.
A minor bit of rule breaking tends to get a verbal 'knock it off', followed by a warning of 10 points say, if they persist it goes up to 30 so they hit the cap for a lite-ban.

Verb has a handful of warnings, two of which occurred on the same day (and so added up to a lite-ban for that 24 hour period). The others were just formal warnings to cut the shit.

What it boils down to in normal terms is

He's had one 24 hour ban and a couple of formal warnings in the last year. That is hardly notable given that some users get them by the month (for spamming emojipasta usually).

Verb's comment was crossing a line, so a ban can be justified for it. A two month ban (even if it got reduced to one month) is still grossly disproportionate. And the idea that because he's been a dick for a few months, it's justified to give him a long-ass ban, is retarded.

Sometimes there's too much emotion in moderating.

You're supposed to remain objective ya fuckin' gandernecks.
This verbatim ban aside, I wouldn't say there has been any issue with that in a very long time.

Hindsight is good though, there are many things that I would have handled differently if they happened today instead of a year or two ago. Learning how to moderate in moderation did take a little while tbh.

I've said before it was fucking stupid and I'll say it again.

Previously, when people have had lengthy bans there is a long history of recent escalating offences to justify it.

I.e 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month etc. Usually for the exact same shit like meatspin or flaming.
