No, it's an ego thing. I just believe I have the mental fortitude to surmount pretty much anything, and I don't want to compromise that for anything. I'm not saying it's rational of me--it's probably the most irrational thing that I believe--but like Epsira said, the thought of being dependent on a drug, instead of my own personal strength and willpower, just KILLS me inside. I won't do it.
If you have a severe chemical imbalance, willpower will only get you so far. Just face it, you need medication.
You can't will clinical depression away any more than you can will cancer away.
The thing is, I view such an action as defeat. Do you think I like losing? Do you think the idea of being dependent on drugs makes me happy? You don't think that would make it worse, because of how I am?

Defeat is letting depression remain unchecked. Antidepressants are not all dependency inducing, really the only ones that are haven't been used widely since the 80s/90s. The more recent (relatively speaking) lines of medication are not addictive in the clinical sense, there is always the chance of psychological dependency, but then that is pretty much down to self-belief/willpower rather than the medication being habit forming. As challenger has said, you can't win a fight with both hands tied behind your back. If the depression is not just mild/circumstance related, and is more along the lines of MDD/Clinical depression then you will essentially need the medication to turn the tide. When your brain is depressed, as opposed to your way of thinking, the neurochemistry is fucked and quite frankly you can't just think/will yourself back into being happy again. The medication (depending on the type mind you, they all act through different mechanisms to achieve a similar goal) will make the minor changes over the course of several months to restore* the original balance of NTs in your brain. When that effect is going up instead of down (i.e depression further depleting the NT levels), that is where willpower comes in and you start to beat it. *Or at least bring it closer to a healthy balance.

Oh and my cousin used to suck her thumb so her parents started dipping her thumb in something that tastes nasty and that stopped it pretty quick. Maybe you could do something similar?
My mum did try that many years ago, there was some fake-skin spray sort of thing (for burn treatment) that she put on my fingers. I think that's probably when I started biting my knuckles instead so that was a bit of a dead end unfortunately.

Kinda like beside/below the nail is the best way to describe it.
Just wrap tape around the tips of your fingers. You won't be able to bite flesh which is what's relieving the tension and anxiety.
I have tried that, I end up just biting through to it though. At least with medical tape anyway, what irish said about industrial plasters might work though.

Anyone else on here have trouble with this?
It's not so bad lately, but I still can't quite stop and it's really starting to drive me up the wall.
I've been biting at them since I was like, 10 or something idk and when I was in high school they were a right mess. Like full on bloody mess, it was like eczema tier. They've healed up fairly well, although I'm pretty sure I fucked the nerves in my fingertips from doing it but at least it's kinda just confined to my thumbs now.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated for fairly obvious reasons.

Nail goes black and then eventually falls off on its own, but you might as well get it sorted professionally. There'll be a new nail growing through underneath it (hopefully) so I wouldn't worry about it.

Considering we grew up in an era being told that you're supposed to lie about everything on the internet and not reveal any real personal information, coming clean in the new era of zero anonymity is kind of to be expected.
Its a transition between the old way and the new way that we all have to make.
I still regret some of the lies I made on b.net to preserve my personal identity to people who I considered my friends.
But that's what we were taught by people who could never have expected just how real the human interaction people share online really could be.
It's not your fault.
I still remember the anxiety on my grandparents faces when I was talking about friends that lived in another country. I'm not too sure why, but I guess the degree of separation between two people talking online actually allows for a lot more honesty (with yourself, and with them). There are things that I can quite comfortably talk about online with friends, that would just sit unsaid and hidden with my friends in person. Even the terminology doesn't sit right, I hate the term/distinction of 'internet friends' and 'IRL friends' because to me it just sounds like the friendship with people online is hollow. It'll be interesting to see how Gen Z turns out having grown up with smartphones in their hands.

 It was kinda tough to pick one, but Boyd Crowder has to be one of the most interesting characters I can think of. Justified had it's ups and downs, but the one consistently 10/10 thing was Boyd. Both a good man and a terrible piece of shit all in one, without it seeming like a shitty forced edgy meme.
