Gaming / Re: Would you restrict what games you child could play?
« on: August 13, 2016, 10:02:25 AM »
Speaking of anecdotes: I have reason to believe, via personal experience, that restricting your children from playing certain games will lead them to continue playing more tasteful games well into their adulthood (ie. they'll be less of a degenerate).

My dad, though he was okay with playing Vice City in front of me as a child, wasn't very comfortable with letting me play the game myself, because I was only around 10 years old at the time. Just watching him play, however, allowed me to contemplate all the things he was doing and evaluate them morally. I'd ask him questions like, "What are you doing?" And he'd answer, bluntly and honestly.

"Why are you driving an ice cream truck?"
"I'm selling ice cream to children. They're laced with drugs."

I remember when he introduced me to the sniper rifle. I asked him what the sniper rifle did, and he demonstrated by sniping a civilian from a building. His head exploded in a geyser of blood. After awhile, the implication of my dad shooting innocent people started to become apparent, so I asked him, "Why are you killing all these people?"

"Because I'm the bad guy," he said. "I mean, I'm not a bad guy, but you play as a bad guy in this game."

At that point, it clicked. Either way, I decided that the game wasn't for me, because I didn't have any interest in being a bad guy, and shooting innocent people didn't really seem like something I wanted to do. I'd rather be a good guy doing good things, and I was scared that if I played GTA, I might become a "bad guy" myself. That didn't sound like fun to me.

And to this day, it still doesn't. I've still never touched a GTA game in my life, and I'm three years above the recommended age. Most M-rated games are (or contain) tasteless garbage, and if my dad hadn't shown me that at an early age, I'd probably be just like most of the degens here, playing dumbass games like Grand Theft Auto or Saint's Row.
Your dad sounds like a great guy

I can't believe we live in a time where there are articles about memes.
At this point every other article about the US election from the BBC mentions memes, it's truly a wonderful time to be alive.

They're upping the servers to 60 tick rate

I don't know what that means but it sounds good
You ever play BF4 at launch compared to current state?

Tickrate was one of the things they fixed to make the game less laggy/hellish although tbh I haven't actually had lag (the bad kind) in overwatch ever.

Bumblebee swarm is pretty OP

5 x D.Va
1x Lucio

So far it is undefeated, we lost one game when a couple of people gave up on the swarm to do random other heroes but otherwise nothing beat the bees.

Ya know, people probably wouldn't have hated it so much if Todd Howard wasn't such an arrogant ass about it.

"It's GOING to be GOTY."
"You'll buy it anyways."

Dude can fuck right off with Skyrim remastered.

Fallout 4
And yet it will still sell millions (if not BILLIONS) of copies on launch day.

But I still don't like your use of terms like "dulling" or "masking of symptoms," as though any other antidepressants could possibly do anything different. While you're right in saying that's all marijuana can do for your depression, that's also all Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Brintellix, Fetzima, Viibryd, Celexa, Lexapro, Sarafem, Cipralex, and Pexeva can do for you, too. None of these will "cure" your depression--they only mask your symptoms.
I'm under the impression that those drugs do "cure" depression by altering the production of the chemicals in your brain that are causing the depression. Weed, on the other hand, doesn't do that, it just makes you feel good for a bit. I guess I could be wrong about that, though.

I really have no idea what you think is rude about that at all. If RC's sister believes THC-based medication will improve her health, she ought to discuss it with her doctor.
I told her what you said, and she claims that she agrees with me and that she's gonna tell her doctor that her meds aren't working and give that a try again. We live in Florida, so it isn't legal, but would discussing this with her therapist be a mistake? I know the therapist wouldn't tell the police or anything, but could she tell our parents?
SSRI medications are designed to stop the reuptake of serotonin (the feel good chemical) in your brain so that you feel like you have more serotonin. Problem is, that serotonin will eventually become depleted and you will need to increase the dosage to achieve the same desired effect. They are symptom managers, they do not "cure" anything. They are simply manipulating a single neurotransmitter in the brain.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-drug. They do help a lot of people when it's done right and the patient is tapered off when the symptoms resolve. Unfortunately, a lot of doctors keep their patients on the drug for years or indefinitely and add on other medications to counteract the side-effects caused by the other drugs. The more drugs added, the higher the chances of having to deal with other iatrogenic disorders.
She's been going to the same doctor for a few years now. I saw the progress way before she started smoking, but shes obviously not happy still. Should I push my parents to try a different doctor?
Yes, if it's been over a year without any notable progress I'd certainly try a different therapist.

The style of psychotherapy might have something to do with it, CBT based approaches are the current gold standard for a reason and if they've been seeing them for a few years then chances are it's not that.
My mom keeps me in the loop with her treatment, and I don't think shes ever mentioned CBT... Could you send some links my way to help convince my parents that they should try a different therapist who will try that treatment?
Hm, yeah CBT might be pretty helpful then.

I'll get some links together ASAP and PM them to you but it might have to be tomorrow if that's alright

Nah

It's if you try to evade a ban-ban not a requested one that you'll get time added to your original ban.

if it jacks the prices of property up even more
It's best to tax the value of the unimproved land itself, rather than the value of any building or property on it. Since the supply of land is so inelastic, it's pretty much impossible for landlords to pass on the burden of the tax to tenants.
Wouldn't that end up stacking the value of land/property in inner city areas even higher than the countryside though?

Space being a premium and all that

Yeah I mean they are the lesser evil and all but it does kinda dissolve any incentive to save up unless you are making a big purchase.
While true, saving is probably better incentivised through a tax system that focuses on consumption and property/land, rather than income.
Whilst that would incline people towards saving, if it jacks the prices of property up even more isn't that going to continue to do-over the rental generation?

It seems like one of the silver linings in all of this EU mess is that it'll possibly make housing more affordable for bri'ish wurkers and all that.

is there any actual sense to having negative interest rates for a bank
As far as I can tell?

We don't really know. It's uncharted territory.

EDIT: Also, those "garbage" interest rates are kind of the reason we are not in the shitstorm the Eurozone periphery is in. Perfect? No. Better than the alternative? Definitely. If only the gov't would open up the taps.

Guardian reporting that consumer spending despite the vote is going strong.
I didn't really expect it to fall, if people have got money to spend then chances are it's going to be spent.
It's when redundancies start flying and debt starts mounting that they become unable to spend money (as opposed to unwilling).

Seeing as how interest rates have been absolute garbage for the last few years, there isn't really a whole lot of point in the average joe trying to build up savings when he gets 0.5% on it all.

//
bit of a sidetrack but

Did you see the murmuring about a bank going for negative interest rates a few weeks back?
It was a headline on a paper that I glanced at in the shop and it was a bit 'wat', is there any actual sense to having negative interest rates for a bank or is that just a good way to get people to abandon ship?

If you like the whole Yatatat approach, the M249 with no barrel, angled and an RDS/Holo works nicely for running and gunning with an LMG.

If you want to just shred everything infront of you for an eternity of sustained fire you can't beat the MG4 with a bipod and compensator, throw down some ammo bags and APS shields and you've got a rocket-proof infinite ammo rapecluster.

This does belong in gaming considering it's about a gaming service kikeing over a customer
That's like saying pokemon belongs in #gaming because there are games of it

Customer service =/= developers/artists etc if this was about customer service fucking over say, 10,000 people then it could belong in gaming, but if it has only happened to one person then it's hardly worth discussing the legitimacy of the company.
Generally it does unless it's explicitly about the animated series or a meta-thread like the pokemon august one.

It's not the party that makes me think this.
What does then?
The entire aspect of building structures and taming beasts is all fruitless when there's no real reason for it other-than 'We made a base to kill a few bugs and tame dinos' Talking PVE based stuff, what happens when you tame every creature? what happens when you build every tower to stand above everything in the server? -Who do you challenge?

Rust had this problem, too.

But you've already heard this from me so
That's the early game stuff, after you've tamed a bunch of dinosaurs and built a nice base you look for the caves hidden around the map which are along the lines of a raid or a dungeon depending on the difficulty of it. You fight your way through these caves with your dinosaurs and equipment to get to the artifacts at the end of them.
When you gather the right artifacts you use them to summon the endgame bosses (Dragon, Shelob and Harambe) to take on.

After that, you have kinda beaten the game content-wise.

Some of the future updates that are scheduled are going to include genetic engineering and the like so (hypothetically for the moment) you'd be able to splice up different creatures to make some spore tier abominations.

It was fun indeed. Maybe I'll use a mic next time.

Favorite two moments were the second Zombie map we played (dark one with SMGs) where 3 humans were holed up in a small tunnel and I somehow found a back entrance to it and stabbed some crouching folks in the back for a triple kill. And the Jenga tower one, where I parkoured through a falling building, made it up a walkway, got pushed off by Psy in his plane (fuck you Psy) and then shot a hail mary plasma bolt straight up while falling which stunned and killed Psy.

Good games, although I'm not much of a fan of the slow gametypes.
OH IT WAS YOU WHO SHOT THAT WAS IT B O I
