When I say masochism, I'm only speaking colloquially.

I don't mean some deep-seated, pathological enjoyment of his own emotional torment.

I thought as much, hence I differentiated the two <_<

OT: I guess it's just another thing to thank media portrayals for.

You don't see the downsides to the 'illness' a character has, usually, or it's done in such a sickly arty manner that it makes me want to break something.

It happens so often that I can't remember the actual one but it's roughly like this; grey filter on the camera, guy wearing a trenchcoat/greatcoat sort of thing, wandering around the city with his head hung down low, *sigh* every few seconds, mournful looks at XYZ, sad music, rain. Etc.

Instead of seeing him just lying on the floor shrieking and crying for no apparent reason. Or avoiding people relentlessly (and not for comedic effect). Or my equally favourite one, is how it only takes a friend shaking them and saying 'pull yourself together' to get them off the sofa and put a spring back in their step.
Ugh.

Then you have shit like Dexter/Sherlock which glamorises psychopaths/sociopaths to such an absurd degree, I still enjoy it (Dexter far more than sherlock) but it's pretty... ehh...
Usually they are protrayed as anti-heroes/misguided/noble at heart, instead of actual psychopaths. One makes for good TV and the other makes for a nightmare in a courtroom <_<

[rambling continues]

To chip in on the bit with SecondClass/Dustin/Meta on the other page <.<

It is certainly possible to 'enjoy' your misery, it depends on how it affects you. The typical MDD person is pretty much dead inside because of it, they don't feel happy and it's just generally a crushing sense of defeat/futility - Depression.

However IIRC, a coping mechanism that can occur is to take comfort in the sadness. I can't remember the exact details but loosely when someone has cried - they feel 'better' afterwards. As dustin pointed out, it's likely something to do with the endorphins released during/after. So I wouldn't automatically dismiss his thought, but I'm not sure I'd call it masochism either.

The other way to view it is like this, say someone is depressed. Serious clinical depression. There is a reasonable chance they won't want to seek help for it, because it might be too painful/embarrassing/change. Taking 'comfort' in the status quo as it were, could be what he's referring to. I could be wrong, but I'd be a little unnerved if he actually meant he really fucking enjoyed it when he was depressed. Because that would certainly be masochistic ._.

God I hate meatbags.
Meatbags are tolerable.
Meatbags make my optical ducts leak.
This is the last time I turn on the LEDs.
Time to kill Meatbags with my axe.
The fake is of far greater value. In it's deliberate attempt to be real, it is more real than the real thing.
Meatbags are Haram.

If anyone wants to try and figure out which line goes with which Avatar, feel free. Get them all right and I'll give you a cookie.

You believe that the guilty deserve to be punished. You believe in bringing good to the most people possible while doing a minimum amount of harm. You are stern but fair.
You are the stereotypical “Crusader.” You combine honor and compassion.

Something to the effect of putting more effort into my studies.

Trouble is, it's all such low level dreary work that I did two/three years ago that I get bored and cut corners. So I bought myself a big old advanced clinical psychology textbook so I can have something interesting to study instead of something tiresomely inane.

Oh and to ban more ppls.
You're repeating a course?
Hmm in a manner of speaking, the work that I did at A-Level (Pre-University study in the UK) is the same as the work that I am doing now. What I suspect they do is because not everyone who is going on this degree will have done Psychology at A-Level so they want to cover the basics themselves to ensure the class is all at the same starting point for next year when it picks up the pace.

It just leaves me feeling a bit *ugh* because it's all shit I've already done lol. Hence the advanced textbook, so I have something to keep my interest going and to avoid coasting >.>
I suppose you have to hold your tongue and try not to look like a smartass in class as well.

I'd say that the school getting attacked on that sort of scale was their tipping point.

The taliban showed their true colours clear as day, and understandably the rest of the country seems to have gone 'Oh bugger' and is now quite happy to support crackdowns on the extremists who breed these lunatics.

The other thing is, I find that people are generally a lot more honest about themselves online. The Flood / Re: Why do clinical psychologists reject science?
« on: December 27, 2014, 04:53:20 PM »
I'll just focus on the mental health aspect because broader psychology is a far less clear science.

So the science behind Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a demonstrable biological problem, brought about by variable factors. It could be genetics, life events, trauma or anything but even those 'psychological' events and factors hold a significant biological role through things like Neurotransmitters.

The symptoms do vary, but to expect a patient to display 100% of the symptoms 100% of the time is as flawed as expecting someone with a common cold to always have a sore throat. Some do, some don't, it depends on the situation.

Look at it like a broken leg, you can break it by jumping off a building or being run over. It's still a broken leg and the way in which you fix it might vary somewhat depending on the fracture but you still set the bone and sort it out. Similar approach with Depression, figure out the best way to treat it and go with that. Usually talking therapies combined with anti-depressants has the best chance of successful treatment.

It isn't an exact science, because it's in it's infancy. And because it deals with incredibly complex living things in a less than tangible form >_>
You aren't able to *see* the broken bone in their mind, you have to work out where it is and how to fix it through talking to the patient <.<

Side point
Quote
In psychology, every individual's personality is different (whether you measure it by MBTI or big five is irrelevant), meaning that every individual response to a test will be different. Science can't handle that. In physics, all electrons in the known universe behave in exactly the same way. In psychology, all people are different. This known, basic premise of psychology violates the preconditions of the scientific principle.
Actually human behaviour tends to follow a lot of patterns, it might seem like people are individuals but when you get a large enough sample you will have those who do the exact same thing and have similar personalities etc.

More broadly, medical psychology is in it's relative infancy. I'd say it's something like early teens.
If you remember how hamfisted and god-awful physical medicine used to be, and how precise/3spoopy5me it can be now, that's the rough parallel I'd draw.

As we get better at profiling people, mapping brains and understanding what makes people tick - I expect to see some pretty drastic improvements in the scientific precision of mental healthcare <.<
Final loose point, when dealing with meatbags things will never be straightforwards. Which is why the rainmen go to the physics labs and the lunatics go to the psych labs >_>

I'm not sure I entirely understand what you're talking.

There is no limit or partition to "science". A plumber who decides to test his hypothesis of why your sink is bust is using the scientific method as far as it matters. Psychologists do this in the same way - it can be difficult to account for variation in behaviour, but it's quite easy to determine where the fringe lies.

It's not that psychology somehow reject science, it's merely that the instruments we use aren't as fine-tuned as those we use for physics.

I think it makes a lot more sense now, thanks.

Glad to be of help, if you ever have any other questions about psychology related shit then feel free to ask >.>

It's not right at all, but you can't reason/argue with a godbotherer.

If you are unfortunate enough to be stuck with a zealot as a parent, it's better to just go along with it until you can leave on your own terms. It's really the best way to ensure someone never goes to church again in their life, forcing them to go on pain of punishment. Those who think for themselves that is.

I have no problem with people who want to go to church and pray, it's the ones who insist on forcing others to go along with them that are tiresome.
