So, I work at a Post Office, so I deal with identity services, which include passports, photos, licenses and the whatnot. Now, anyone needs a passport, which includes photos, now in some cases, being just a post office, we are not always equipped to serve every mean. For instance a disabled child needed passport photos, now this is difficult because the child somewhat understood the situation, but also, didnt.
We're generally fit to photograph children from about, 3-4 all the way to adults, who can stand on their feet, we do have a polarized camera for certain situations, where you do have someone who cant stand up, but they understand the situation and can follow instructions. After about 10 minutes of trying to take the photo, I explained to the parent, that because it is a passport, we need to follow certain guidelines, otherwise the person who doesnt need to deal with customers at the comfy office desk in the big city, just sends it back.
Now I explained to the lady this, and referred her to a properly fit camera store across the street, who is actually better equipped to suit the means which are needed, she started out very nice, but when it became clear this wouldnt be an easy process, she did get very upset. I was very sincere about how I described things, I never described the child to her in any way beside calling the situation 'different' that because some situations are different, we cant always meet them. To this the lady got very 'disgusted' and told to see the manager and took a complaint form. I did offer to continue to try, and even offered to assist her in finding the store, but once again I was told that she was disgusted and....
The lady said "I wish someday that if you have children they would have the same problems I have to deal with", saying she and her son were victims of discrimination....
This did very much piss me off, I didnt show any distress toward her, I just apologised as she started crying and left the store, while it is sad I did try as best I could and offered nothing but help....so I punched the brick wall at the back of the store and just continued through the parade of people for the rest of the day.
Now....what I did, was that wrong? Was there any way I could have prevented the situation? Or have you had similar situations, which if left in failure generally leads to accusations to oneself.
