Wait a minute.

We're applying consent to a video game?

Here's a better way to put it. When you pay the store for the game you acknowledge and accept everything than can/would happen. Since you are literally buying the game.
Except that's retarded.

Except it isn't.

Overthinking simple things like "am I consenting to a game mechanic?" Is just silly.
At the moment thats fine, but if they get much much more complex, there needs to be something more to this.

(they would have to make genitals, if the tech is possible, if not....it may cause a lot of trauma to the brain, so you'd need to make sure everything is there)
idk about you that sounds cool not having genitals just being smooth
I'd feel like I'm missing a limb, I think that would be weird as hell not having those parts there. I think it's all a development thing, and if it would actually cause any mental issues. Maybe it would be easier for females, I don't know how they'd feel, but I think a lot of males would agree with me.

Not that I want to whip my dick out in the virtual world......but just, it's a difficult thing to explain, imagine if you could feel something which wasn't there? It'd feel wrong.
but feeling weird and different is the awesomest part of video games

it's also my fetish
O_O

Interesting, weird.......but interesting. You're the kind of person who wouldnt mind getting converted into a robotic body aren't you?
nah I just have an amputation and transformation fetish
Again

Are you playing without any hints or walkthrough tips?
Preferably. I might have a few questions about some things, but yeah, as usual, I'd like this to be as blind as possible.

Ah right. Just saiyan, because there's some weird or vague things in there that are obscure or obtuse as hell that can leave you stumped, which you will probably chalk down to bad game design or something.
Well they tried to make it much like a lot of older games, where they explain the basics and leave the rest to you. Not every game needs to be showering the player in tutorials, and a game shouldn't be bad because it lacks that. There is only one thing they should have explained, beside that I'm fine with the rest.
sometimes there just isn't a clear way to progress

firelink is different, there are several areas you can try to progress through but they have too tough of enemies.

being lost after anor londo is just a bunch of backtracking until you can find the damn new areas
Is it strange I never had that problem?

Spoiler
They do briefly show you places to go, I remember getting to places I couldnt get past (white walls) so I just back tracked, but by that time you had fast travel, so it wasn't all that bad.

And I got fucked by the Skeletons at the start, so I just went back there straight away

Depends how sick and twisted you are, if someone can fulfil their desires without it actually being classed as criminal, I wouldnt be surprised if they buy multiple systems, see how long they can get away with it.

This is a very messy can of worms I've opened, now that I think about it.

There's a reason boxes say "online content not rated".
I did mention that. What I'm saying is in the future, that small blurb might not be enough. Especially when someone gets sued because of it.

So, Verbs: Dark Souls thread brought up something interesting which I haven't exactly thought about before in gaming, consent. Do you permit such a thing in gaming to happen, without your knowledge or allowance prior to it happening, how does it effect you? And why is it a good, and/or bad thing.

Verbs example, of course was Dark Souls, where players can invade someone else's world, hunt them down, and kill them. The victim does not know prior to this when the perpetrator will arrive, they just know that it 'can' happen, possibly resulting in their death and getting sent back to a bonfire, where they will need to progress again, and more carefully to reclaim the souls that they had lost. Now, where I stand with this is, personally it is not a problem. You know that it can happen, generally the first time is a shock to the system, but Dark Souls does that a bit in general. So you know it can happen, but you continue to play, you just dont know when.

Hence to the case, if you allow yourself to play this game online then you consent to the possibility of your world getting invaded. This works very similar to most RPGs and random encounters, its much the same way but much less dynamic. You know you can, and probably will find yourself in a random encounter, you just don't know when.

This is about as far as it goes with gaming for the time being. If someone manages to hack into your system and manipulate how you play, possibly by halting your ability to play at all, then that is yes, a breach of consent, but this goes out of gaming and into personal security and privacy as a lot more then your gaming information can be accessed. But if a game allows a similar feature to be applied within the gameplay, and the player understands completely that it can happen, then consent is given due to the players choice in firing up the game and playing with that risk, and in some cases being the perpetrator themselves.

Now, when will this step to a higher level? VR.

Will this be something we're currently capable of, no. But I fear the world of full-dive VR (which would be complete immersion, having the technology to escape our bodies and enter a true virtual world)  will be a grim, and dark place. Much like the real world. As I feel this is when gaming's consensual issues will rise, and possibly go into the hands of law, depending on how much a game can allow.

I'll be brief and just say it. Rape.

When will gaming advance to the stage where that could potentially be possible? (they would have to make genitals, if the tech is possible, if not....it may cause a lot of trauma to the brain, so you'd need to make sure everything is there)
Full Dive VR, would first of all, be limited to a certain age barrier, any lower then 18 would create a lot of ethics issues. Paedophilia would be carried out and possibly carry over to reality. Statements would have to be signed by every user, so they cannot sue the developer, mainly for things over users would do. This already happens but in a much more tame way 'Gaming Experience may change online' along those lines.

But till then, those problems will need to be tackled, but for now...we have not reached that level, and maybe thats a good thing. What are your thoughts, friends?

I think the whole consent thing is a bit far-fetch'd. You decided on your own to play this game, knowing such things can happen, the fact you don't know when is annoying, but the fact you know it can happen, and you still choose to continue is completely overriding the fact of someone saying they don't consent to a certain feature of a product, no necessarily Dark Souls.

I think playing Offline is a completely sensible response to that. But I don't think the ethics argument belongs here, not yet. When we go full dive into VR.....then that will probably become an issue (which would be an interesting discussion), but for now it is not an apparent problem.

Or you could just......play the game offline, play as a human
I didn't know this was an option. I thought playing offline and going Hollow were one in the same.

So what's the point of going Hollow if you can just go offline to avoid player invasions?
I honestly thought people would have brought up that point in these countless debates you've had.
I did on the second page, no one seemed to notice.

You can see player 'soapstone' mark, pretty much small hints on whats ahead of you, they're mostly dependable. There's also some factions you can join for online play which don't require you to become human. But no, if you have Humanity, then you can become human. Online connectivity is for PvP and Co-op PvE only, it doesn't effect the base game in any way other then the above.

(uhhhh, 'Humanity' is a consumable item you use at Bonfires to become human)

Is there anything I'll be able to use as a progress bar in this game?

Half-Life 2 had chapters, Halo had levels, Fallout had the main quests... Does Dark Souls have anything?

If it's boss names, or something, fuck it--I won't bother. Those are a tad spoiler-y, and I could go without knowing them.
We generally use locations, as we all generally go to places in a certain order, as you'll find, you can get to most  places from the get go, but you're just not ready for them.

So just say 'Completed -location here-' and basically we'd all get the picture, and trust me, you'll remember the names of these places.

Also just become human at bonfires for the sake of additional potions, after that just go back to normal zombie man. I dont think you care about rare drops so you dont really have anyother reason to go human. If you do you can summon NPC helpers at certain parts but theyre not that great.

The game will be impossible with only 5 flasks though, dont do that to yourself.

Oh and what system are you playing on? Probably to prevent anger I'd ask you to turn the connection from the internet off. I don't know if the PS3/360 games are even populated anymore, but still, it's not inviting to get some guy with end game gear to slap you over, and loose all your souls.

That's not even a spoiler, I'm just preventing you from throwing the game into a furnace.
PS3.

I already said I'm going Hollow, because as far as I'm concerned, it's the only correct way to play this game.
You do have some benefits of going human, a couple of extra opportunities, but I won't say more. It's also makes some conversations less awkward, where they comment that you're sane and not hollow, even though you look like a zombies asshole.

But you're the boss.
