The Flood / Watching: Cold in July (AMAZING)

I'm watching Cold in July right now, and I'll be damned if Michael C. Hall doesn't have a mustache and mullet!

No idea what's going on in the movie, but his hair is keeping me locked in so far:

Why the hell is anyone still playing Call of Duty? Anyone who buys CoD every year is just letting other humans know that they enjoy having dicks shoved up their ass, and then having their rapist take their money.

There was a time in my life where I enjoyed getting together with my buddies and having dicks shoved up my ass, but that time is over. It is now time for Destiny, fresh dicks...no dicks? fuck I dunno

"For example Andrew "Weev" Auernheimer was sentenced to 41 months in prison for exposing a security hole on AT&T's servers that publicly revealed iPad users' email addresses. The court ruled that the "loss" to AT&T in his case was $73,000"

Lolwot? "Hey guys don't use this companies internet because at the moment all Ipad users emails are publicly shown" = 41 months in prison. Did I just read that right or did he "show" them their error by hacking/etc. them?

Actually, yes
Sounds like a less-crazy version of Live Free or Die Hard.

This law was the leading factor in Aaron Swartz's suicide, he was looking down the barrel of this law and couldn't handle it. Federal conviction rate is 90+%

The Flood / Re: Has the site been slowing down for anyone else?
« on: August 03, 2014, 12:10:15 AM »
This is Cheat. I'm using this account because my ISP is slow as shit and hasn't changed the IP for Sep7agon.

As far as I know, we are still getting DDoS'd every so often. This host seems more resilient than the last, so it's not going completely down. I am working on contacting the new host about this issue to see if they can block overwhelming requests and keep everything from slowing down.

If they can block incoming UDP and ICMP traffic for the site, that would go a long way to mitigating the attacks.

What happens when you are caught DDoSing a site, affecting a hosts income by denying service to its users?

Quote
Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA)

Resource type: Glossary Item Status: Maintained Jurisdiction: USA

A federal criminal law (18 U.S.C. ? 1030) that makes unlawful certain computer-related activities involving the unauthorized access of:

  • Any computer to obtain certain types of prohibited information.
  • A protected computer, defined by the statute to include a computer:
used by or for the federal government or a financial institution; or
used in interstate or foreign commerce or communication.

Specifically, the CFAA prohibits:

Knowingly accessing a computer without authorization to obtain national security or other government-restricted data.

Intentionally accessing a computer without authorization to obtain certain information from:

a financial institution or consumer reporting agency;
the federal government; or
a protected computer.

Intentionally accessing and affecting the use of a government computer.

Knowingly accessing a protected computer to defraud and obtain anything of value.
Causing damages specified in the statute by knowingly transmitting harmful items or intentionally accessing a protected computer.

Knowingly trafficking in computer passwords.

Extortion involving threats to damage a protected computer.

CFAA

Sentencing under CFAA is a bitch, depending upon the 'level' of the offense, as ruled by a judge, the sentences can range from >5 years to life. Right now it's a bit extreme, but when you are being attacked, it feels just I imagine.

"For example Andrew "Weev" Auernheimer was sentenced to 41 months in prison for exposing a security hole on AT&T's servers that publicly revealed iPad users' email addresses. The court ruled that the "loss" to AT&T in his case was $73,000"

Probably another DDoS attempt.
Do you think they mean to attack us or another site using this host?

It's clearly a targeted attack at the domain, as it has persisted across multiple hosts.

In computing, a denial-of-service (DoS) or distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users.

The Flood / Re: Has the site been slowing down for anyone else?

It seems like every few minutes the site will slow down and pretty much stop working for a couple minutes. Other websites seem to run just fine when this site slows down, so I'm wondering if I'm the only one getting this issue.

Am I?

The site is under regular DDoS attack, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack

News / Re: We have a new host now
« on: August 02, 2014, 11:52:54 PM »
In case you didn't know, yesterday night the forum was hit by a major DDoS attack that crashed the server and took the host's website offline for an hour. They've basically told me they cannot tell who was behind the attack because it involved many different IP addresses and the combined requests were several gigabytes worth. They kicked the site off of their server and we now have a new one.

But since we have a new server, some stuff might still fuck up. Namely, remember that error that would pop up in the beginning (max_questions)? That is now once again possible, so I'm trying to work with this host in order to fix it before it happens.

We can also get hit by this attack again, if the jerk is so inclined. I will be looking into things I can do to guard against it, but it's very difficult to stop an attack of the magnitude we experienced.

More on this stuff as I know more.

EDIT: your avatar is now broken if you uploaded one. You need to re-upload it.

What we know:

Your site is under a major DDoS attack. We have null routed the domain to stop the traffic effecting our servers. We will have to ask you to find alternate hosting for your domain as our platform can no longer support you.
Quote
The traffic was coming from a multitude of sources, it's most likely that some form of botnet was responsible. At it's peak we were receiving ~10gb of inbound traffic to the domain. Unfortunately in extreme cases like this we do have to advise that a site cannot be hosted on our shared platform in order to ensure services remain reliable for other users.

If dude was on a VPN then we can probably just forget about trying to trace his original IP. I don't know if there's anyway to detect that but it seems like a shit ton of effort would have to go into it.

The only way to trace it, is if one of the nodes attacking the server was the original attacker. If it was a bot/zombie attack there is no easy way to trace it. My guess is, whoever is behind it isn't smart enough to have a forest of zombies at their disposal, and more likely used a coordinated attack across a couple of machines using a tool like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_Orbit_Ion_Cannon

I'd be interested in seeing the logs for the latest attack.

There are hosts that are better equipped to combat DDoS attacks, to a certain extent of course.
