It might be something you like. Your taste is fairly different to mine, so it's hard to say.
It's well thought out. Until near to the end where, if you notice that it IS so well thought out, one plot point destroys the whole main arc. It's very irrational and annoyed me greatly, because the rest of the story fit well together.
You'll probably get something out of it, it's heavy on the detailing in some areas, it starts off strong but quickly slows to a crawl.
I had to struggle to finish it and it's one of the lowest rated anime on my list because I was so dissatisfied with it.
You still have yet to mention what part about the ending ruined it for you.

As for me I thoroughly enjoyed its story of a dystopian/post apocalypse society, with certain other ideas that were explored, somewhat slow, but that didn't bother me.
