I see 1911s as more like collector's items. Unless they have double-stacked magazines, they aren't very practical for any kind of defense due to their limited magazine capacity. They are sexy little toys that you take out to the range when you are feeling a little classic and nothing more.
Pretty much. They are really nice to shoot and even the double stack arent really that big when it comes to the grip but they are heavy. The 1911 has its pros/uses but in todays time, they are a relic. I really do shoot better with them though. On it being home defence gun, I think its fine if its a good working gun. Ive seen too many 1911 fail.
