http://abcnews.go.com/US/man-killed-police-shooting-ferguson-missouri/story?id=27807891A man was shot and killed by a police officer Tuesday in Berkeley, Missouri, authorities said -- sparking new unrest in a region already reeling following an August police shooting a few miles away in Ferguson.
The shooting happened at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday at a Mobil gas station, St. Louis County Chief of Police Jon Belmar said in a morning news conference.
Belmar said police visited the gas station when a report of a larceny came in. The victim, who is 18 years old, pointed a gun at the officer, sparking the deadly shooting, Belmar said.
"Bad choices were made," Belmar said. "This individual could have complied, he could have ran away, he could have dropped the gun."
The shooting sparked a new wave of unrest in the region, which has been wracked by anxiety following the August shooting of Michael Brown, 18, in nearby Ferguson. Following Tuesday’s shooting, a crowd of 200 to 300 people swarmed the gas station, with four people arrested and a police officer sustaining a leg injury, Belmar said.
St. Louis County Police released surveillance video today showing the moments before the shooting. The officer can be seen parking his vehicle, and a conversation ensues. The man’s arm appears to be raised -- but the video is inconclusive, captured from the side of the building a considerable distance away.
Belmar said the officer was assigned a body camera on Tuesday, but was not wearing it at the time of the shooting. Additionally, the vehicle's dashboard camera was likely not in use.
The officer -- a six-year veteran of the Berkeley police department, age 34 and white -- fired three rounds, with one round striking the victim, Belmar said.
Belmar declined to release the victim’s name or race, but said the man’s criminal record includes assault and armed robbery charges.
Toni Martin identified the victim as her son, Antonio Martin. Toni Martin told reporters at the scene that her son was with his girlfriend at the time of the shooting and refuted police claims that her son was carrying a gun.
He was trying to get his life back on track after getting expelled from school, she said.
“He was a good young man,” she said. And you guessed it: People are getting all pissy about this now, especially on Facebook (look at the live feed) https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/antoniomartin?source=whfrt&position=2&trqid=6096422687797404122I simply can't understand how so many people can be this dumb; a man pulls out a gun and points it at officer, just days after two cops were killed in NY. He took appropriate action and now the officer and the department are the bad guys. Oh no, this poor and "innocent angel" can't do anything bad, let's just blame it on police who already have a difficult job as it is Soon enough it's going to get to the point where police won't even do their jobs because of this fear then the public will yell because cops are not on the streets. It's a loose-loose situation for law enforcement and it's getting pathetic

Are you under 18? If so, Congrats! When your parents tell you to do something, so long as it's not illegal or threatening, then you listen and do it
Yes, they have the right, but is it really right? In the end it'll just make OP dislike Christianity and put a space between him and his parents.
Nah. My parents made sure I went to church, my grandparents made sure my parents went to church. I also know several people that had to attend church and they're not distasteful of Christianity. It's not going to do a person harm to sit for an hour once a week and listen to a person talk. Children are forced to attend school and there isn't a mass national drop-out rate because of it
Nobody I know enjoyed attending church/bible studies as a child; most were dragged to it by their parents. Only one person that I know below the age of 50 attends church regularly, and most of the people I know say that they're Christians. I'm sure there's a connection here and a better way to explain it, but I'm in another cycle of sleep related issues and can't fully put this argument into the words I need.
I never liked to go myself, but I don't hate my parents or have disdain of the religion. I'm actually happy they made me go, looking back on it

Well for one, I'll state that there are 32,000 gun-related deaths each year. 60% of this number is made up with suicides; you can't simply regulate what people will do with their lives and a gun is honestly the easiest and quickest way to get out. If there was ever a statistic to display the extreme need for further funding into mental illness and how to combat it, this would be it.
With that said, there are some estimated numbers with a few select cities: New Orleans gang-related homicides number between 33-55%, In Chicago, an estimated 80% of homicides are gang-related. And in Baltimore, the police commissioner states that 80% of homicides are drug-related
Sources?
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/01/01/the-year-in-murder-2013-marks-a-historic-low-for-many-cities.htmlIt was one of the few cities to see an increase in murders, and Baltimore’s City Police Commissioner Anthony Batts says that 80 percent are drug-related. Murders were up seven percent over last year, up from 218. Baltimore’s violent crime overall saw a decrease from last year. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-02-14/opinion/ct-oped-0214-gingrich-20130214_1_gangs-homicide-victimization-rate-white-collar-crimeChicago police estimate that roughly 80 percent of homicides in the city are gang-related. There are about 100,000 gang members here. http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2014/01/2013_new_orleans_murder_rate_d.htmlPolice say 52 of the city's 155 murders in 2013 were gang-related, less than half the number -- 109 -- documented the year before.

Legitimate question here: what's scary about having a gun in the home? What about a gun hidden in a drawer gives a feeling of insecurity?
This.
Out of the very large amount of gun related homicides and injuries that take place in the US every year, only a small percentage has got to do with gangs and organized crime. It's not even been a few weeks since Rocketman posted on here how a family member almost got shot by his partner who went for the gun in an argument and a fit of rage. This kind of stuff, including tons of potentially lethal accidents, happens in a ton of households every single day.
I'm not going to turn this into another gun debate, but I can definitely see why a kid would be uncomfortable having one around the house.
Well for one, I'll state that there are 32,000 gun-related deaths each year. 60% of this number is made up with suicides; you can't simply regulate what people will do with their lives and a gun is honestly the easiest and quickest way to get out. A total of 34% (Just over 11,000) were homicides. And this brings up my second point: Not all homicides=unlawful; there exists justifiable homicides and that number is included. But what about the whole gangs idea? Well simply put, there is no actual data that shows what unjustifiable homicides make up gang/organized crime activity. With that said, there are some estimated numbers with a few select cities: New Orleans gang-related homicides number between 33-55%, In Chicago, an estimated 80% of homicides are gang-related. And in Baltimore, the police commissioner states that 80% of homicides are drug-related. So while it may not be gangs in every case, their does lay a criminal manner with these deaths that take place between drug deals, robberies, burglaries, kidnapping, car jacking, etc
