Fallout 4

It's the only game aside from Halo 5 I've bought this year, so take that as you will.

I haven't been bored with the world, I really like exploring it, but I feel as if once I've found every place it'll be different because it feels like there's not much of a reason to explore except for the sake of exploring.
That's really it. Exploring for the sake of exploring, and while that's fine, a lot of what prompts people to explore is because games like this have a carrot at the end of the stick method, where they tease you into exploring in hopes of bigger rewards. You come across that random cave/building on your way to a destination? Why not explore it, you might find an interesting story or a really cool weapon or some neat looking armor if you do.

That's completely removed from Fallout 4 and it makes me actually think "do I want to waste 15 minutes in this building collecting things for my settlement, or just go to my objective?"

You know there won't be a good weapon in there, you know the armor won't be anything better than what you already have either. Your only hope is some legendary enemy in there drops something interesting, and odds are it won't be. I'm speaking from a high level perspective when I say this. By the time you're around level 20, it basically removes any real reason to explore anything unless you're naked or something.
Mhmm, perhaps there's too much of an emphasis on modding weapons and armour, you basically HAVE to do it if you want good stuff

There is the occasional rare and unique item, like that Cryo gun in Vault 111 and I found Grognak's Axe and his outfit, but those feel like the exception rather than the norm

It definitely feels like they're trying to push the new system

which makes it feel even weirder when you do get a 'legendary' item with a unique effect. Personally,  think you should be able to deassemble those items and apply their effect to other weapons, but you have to find them first. Kind of like enchantments in Skyrim. Or you unlock the know-how to make a better effect.

Also, the lack of burning damage is really odd. I feel like a Molotov should do more damage over time than just the initial explosion. It just feels like a fancy impact grenade, really.

Stealth actually works great, you just have to walk slower and you can't wear heavy armour otherwise enemies can hear you

I'm using leather armour with the shadowed/ whatever stealth upgrade but I'm getting noticed way too easily. My AGL is like 6 so it shouldn't be that. Unless there's some perks I haven't seen.

Okay so you can use the duplication glitch on YOU'RE SPECIAL book to max out all your stats. I'm planning on making a save with it now so I can have a save for future reference if/ when it gets patched.

All of the department stores in New York City were in the black on that day every year because of all the people who went shopping, so they started having ridiculous sales, and it spread across the world.

Another problem is I'm already bored with the world. No weapons in dungeons and all that = already being bored.

Really? I'm still going.

Granted, I had the patience to go through every dungeon in skyrim without getting bored, so maybe I'm just a weirdo.

I'm noticing that any kind of build aside from small guns is pretty difficult in this game, because of how expensive/ rare big guns and energy weapons ammo is and how stealth doesn't really seem to be a viable option anymore - at least when compared to Skyrim and even NV/ 3.

Maybe just being a boring moralfag here, but
Spoiler
I wish in one of these games you could unite the factions or at least clear up their misconceptions. The Brotherhood hate the Institute...because robots are abominations, apparently? The Institute has the brightest minds on the East Coast and they don't even question the personhood of robots specifically designed to be increasingly aware and autonomous, with personalities literally downloaded from human brains? The Railroad seems pretty justified but still unwilling to cooperate with anyone.

Spoiler
It's more that the Brotherhood see Synths in the situation that eventually, Synths would outnumber humans and the question would soon arise for why they even need to keep humans around. In the Brotherhood's eyes, synths and robotics technology is just as dangerous as nuclear weapons, and they make it pretty clear that the Synths could well end up bringing the next apocalypse. to me, it's a very forced reason to make the Brotherhood fight the institute, and it's certainly very weak compared to the NCR-Legion, but it's not as bad as the F3 Enclave.

Nah. I'm guessing either obscene amounts of Rad-X/ RadAway or they're perfectly happy becoming ghouls. I know there's one you met in the BoS questline who's a ghoul - makes more sense that there'd be a lot of ghouls.
going to one of their camps, i dont remember seeing any rad-x or anything of the sorts. they probably are hiding something.

confirmed the first dlc is about finding their secret anti-radiation drug

Great review. Could anyone with experience with the endings comment on each faction's conclusion? Like, how satisfying are they? I'm leaning towards the Railroad because the Institute are assholes and it's fun to fight vertibirds, but if the ending sucks I'll go a different route.
The only faction that feels like it has an actual buildup, climax, and ending, is the Brotherhood of Steel. I beat it with them and the Institute, and then saw the ending for Railroad and Minutemen. They pale in comparison.

BoS actually makes you make a few hard decisions, and the finale actually seems like it's a finale. The others do not in the slightest. Though there is one complaint, and it's...

Spoiler
that they just rely on Liberty Prime again as you make your way to the Institute. You would think they'd think of something other than relying on Fallout 3's final mission, but nah.

Eh. The inclusion of that is pretty obvious fan service. Not complaining, he's awesome, but it's definitely fan service. doesn't have quite the same impact as it did before, though.

Spoiler
The Brotherhood's beef with the Railroad was really forced though. Maybe it's just because I ignored all the other factions because they never really made it clear how/ when helping other factions makes the Brotherhood stop liking you, but the BoS mission to exterminate the Railroad had absolutely no build up beforehand and the reason seems really forced.

I automatically put 1,2 and tactics at the bottom (not including POS) because I hate the gameplay.

And 3, NV and 4 have got better than each other in that order.

brotherhood ending

You blow up the institute with Liberty Prime's help. It's satisfying enough, the Prydwen stays above the airport and the Brotherhood begins mass deployments throughout the Commonwealth to exterminate Super Mutants, Feral Ghouls and Raiders. A bunch of Brotherhood guys are stationed in Diamond City to trade with locals and I guess generally cooperate with other settlements. They do wipe out the Railroad, though, and the reasons seem fairly half arsed. But as far as I can tell, they don't really care about the Minutemen too much, and don't have any hostilities between each other. Overall, they seem determined to make the Commonwealth a better place to live, alongside recoveribg technology. A nice mix of Lyons' Brotherhood ideals and the Western Brotherhood. Dr. Li gets pissed at you for destroying the Institute, though.

It's fairly satisfying, they don't just bog off and leave the place, they make it clear the Brotherhood's job is far from over and they are here to stay.

I haven't played any other factions so I can't comment on them, or compare yet.

I more meant references. Like how Veronica in NV mentions the Brotherhood Civil War in F3, I wish there were mentions in Brotherhood terminals of the NCR-Brotherhood war, or the NCR-Legion war, or ecen the Midwestern BOS-Legion war. Just passing mentions would be nice, not definitive 'this is what happens'.

After playing Skyrim, it was hard to get into Oblivion. The menus were clunky and the characters looked awful. Like, really bad. It was more of an effort to play and the story wasn't interesting enough to keep me going through. The dialogue system was fucking atrocious as well, I never figured that out.
They make references in 4 like you mention. Even the Shi, when even Obsidian didn't mention in NV. As for Oblivion, yeah that skill dialogue thing was bad, but you can't sit here and tell me the main story for Skyrim was better than Oblivion. It was clunky, yeah, but for the time it was in, it's just a much better game for the customization, depth, and actual writing of things such as quests and the journals you find.

This brings up a good point (the whole video actually if you wanna watch)

https://youtu.be/1wujJnlsJh4?t=735

I think the MQ for skyrim was terrible and was really just justification for the Shout mechanic. I'm still perplexed why they introduced the interesting concept of the Thalmor/ Great War and the Skyrim Civil War then did nothing with it. The short questline barely affects the game world, and feels pretty redundant. That should have been the main quest, honestly.

My point on Oblivion was that the story wasn't interesting enough to distract me from the awful character models, clunky gameplay and confusing menu system, among others. Skyrims's combat and general gameplay was pretty tight and enjoyable enough, though far from perfect or in-depth. Kind of like Fallout 3,I guess. But that's probably my own fault for playing Skyrim before Oblivion, so it kind of ruined the experience for me. Kind of like playing NV or Fallout 4 before 3.
According to scrounged up game files, it was originally planned to be a much larger questline with an actual strategic "capture" sort of mechanic involving forts and so on

But, as with New Vegas, a lot of content got cut to meet deadlines

That's pretty cool. I'm disappointed the seige of Whiterun never really felt like a seige. Would have been cool if while you were in Whiterun, you could see a massive army in the distance.

Also cavalry would have been cool. Shame there's no horseback NPCs.

I'm still happy to give Fallout 4 a solid 9/10. It's easily the best game I've bought in years- at least since I bought the entire Mass Effect ttilogy pre-owned for £12.

However, I stand by in that NV had the better writing overall. But having seen Bethesda's track record with Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim, I'd say they are slowly but surely improving.  I'm disappointed that they pretty much pretended NV doesn't exist, from no inclusion of Riot Armour, to simple things like some of the magazines/ skill books and such.  I like that mention of the NCR in one of the quests, though. That was nice. Even so, I pretty much predicted what would have happened to Shaun - I guess I've just seen too much Sci-Fi so I'm able to guess stuff like that. I'm also surprised there's no ability to craft weapons/ armour from scratch- raider, metal, leather armours and simple weapons should be craftable from raw materials, IMO. Similarly, I'm disappointed there's no ammo crafting anymore. The game would lend itself perfectly to crafting bullets and different ammo types.

However, the worldspace is amazing and really fun to play in, I love that power armour is actually power armour, and ammo/ caps are actually somewhat hard to find in the early (and even mid-late) game, meaning you will have to scavenge. I wish Fusion Cores were a bit rarer.

Also, the atmosphere of the Glowing Sea, and when in radiation storms (the weather in this game is beautifully done) is amazing. Really intense, and really feels like they took the Divide/ Capital Wasteland and upped it by 10. It's a really fun location to explore.
Well they're kind enough to not mention NV because it's not their work. I like that they respect the original people's zone across the US. It's 2500+ miles away, so naturally it wouldn't make much of a difference.

In regards to that track record, I'd call Skyrim a downgrade from Oblivion on many a thing. Sure not graphics or combat (though that always sucked), but just production values and how they went about things. Quests and writing was more creative in Oblivion, but has been steadily declining since Morrowind.

One thing I find a little jarring is how, if you play as the female character, it's a bit odd how you are an expert at using power armour and pretty much any weapon you find. It made sense for the male protagonist as he had military experience, but not so for the female. That's a bit of suspension of disbelief there, though I guess no more than the Lone Wanderer in F3.

I like the pre-war prologue, but I think it would have been better if you got to choose from a selection of jobs when the Vault-Tec guy is asking you questions which could give you some base SPECIAL stats (IE Lawyer for high charisma, military for high Endurance, scientist for high intelligence and so forth) or do your own special stats and type ypur own job, which they could have a system for characters to say 1000 different jobs like names- it would allow you to have choice in your backstory and accurately reflect your capabilities in the wasteland.

I haven't been banned since last year

i can

Please do.
No thanks, you fucking nerd.

nice meme
Not a meme. I chose to say that because I thought it reflected on your passive nature towards things most people would consider normal social things. You're somewhat asexual, fine, but not so fine by society's standards. Point one of being passive in normal behaviour.

Point two would be your love for gaming and whatever computer shit you do - stuff that isolates you in a safe environment. The third point is your opposing of physical activity, something most "normal" people would consider as something you have to do. The fourth example of why you're a passive nerd is your reply "can you get banned". Instead of addressing your dislike towards me by addressing points or w/e, you type "can you get banned" as if not dealing with an individual will make the problem go away.

Nerds are passive, you are passive.

Now remember, I haven't expressed my opinions, I've only stated what I believe is common sense, and how you interact with it.

You pay too much attention to me
Another example of your passiveness is how you try to avoid conflict, or rather confrontation.

I'm lazy
Many people are, but you are passive.

However, being "Alpha" with expensive suits and good facial aesthetics is only needed when you need to charm other people and show authority and w/e so that you can get other people to trust you. It's a relic of our species' past that fades as progress moves forward.

Yes.
