I thought it would also be worth mentioning Paranoia Agent since I imagine Mushishi may be in the top 200.
If you've watched Paprika, Perfect Blue, or Tokyo Godfathers (I've seen the first two and recommend), it's by the same person. I actually don't have a lot to say about it because I saw it a while ago and most of it flew over my head. All I can really remember is a distinct madness and psychological intrigue that is a trademark of Satoshi Kon films. 1125

If you haven't seen Monster yet you're missing out on a classic.
It's a detective thriller about a neural surgeon tracking a psychopath through Europe. It's well paced for the most part, well executed, economic in use of exposition, and engrossing in its use of mystery. Mushishi (refer to my avatar): The show follows the exploits of Ginko, a Mushishi (think ectobiologist) in curing people of strange ailments brought on by these strange creatures called mushi. It's surreal, beautiful, and subtle in ways many anime currently don't compare. If you don't like the absence of overarching plot I wouldn't suggest watching it, but you'd miss out on an interesting experience. Humanity Has Declined: Any attempt to rationalize the shows premise will do a horrible injustice to the tone and comedy, the principle things I enjoyed about it. It's whimsical and darkly humorous, yet brightly colored and strange. If you've already seen these I have more. 1126

The Flood / Re: Social commentary thread« on: October 15, 2015, 08:05:37 PM »In one of my classes I'm learning about 90s Japan trendy dramas and this is one of the subjects broached. The author Lukács argues that consumer investment in media culture valuates abstract commodities. In the context of the book she discusses image commodification as exemplified by Japanese tarento [popular, transmedial idols], who are used to sell lifestyles. Lifestyles are displayed through advertised goods and fashion trends, appealing to the viewer as a way to identify with lifestyles and through consumerism express their identity. 1136

Gaming / Re: Top Villains in games?« on: October 15, 2015, 07:41:33 PM »The story to Twilight Princess was alright to me. It felt like it was trying too hard to be in your face dark, where as Majora's Mask was more subtle about it and achieved more. The overworld was also painfully empty. The oppressiveness of the threat is better incorporated into gameplay in MM. In TP exposition is primarily where players learn about the threat to the world, or the game stops to introduce a dark portal cutscene occasionally, or players explore the twilight and see the effect on the landscape primarily, with people as more subordinate. In MM all players just have to look up to get a sense of the world threat. Again, it plays to subtlety, but it was something the player could control, and I think that agency in acknowledging (or even ignoring impending doom) was more engaging. Probably even more important to this were the side quests in MM and how their role in evoking emotional responses from players. In TP people are affected by the twilight and it inspires fear, but due to the world size (and as you've pointed out, sparseness) these aren't as concentrated and the landscape is overwhelmingly the dominant game place Illustrating threat. MM also has a large game space and by no means is it a dialogue heavy game, but the instances are more frequent, and to acquire masks players have to interact with people in the world. Their process of handling impending doom is much more explicit than TP, and it better communicates the plight of the world. There's also the role of being a chosen hero vs. someone who chooses to be a hero. The quest and the responsibility players assume with stepping up to the monumental challenge weighs on the player as something they do for reasons they make rather than something they're assigned to do. Quote I did enjoy the game though, music was AMAZING, and the character designs were just top notch. Ganondorf just looked amazing. Still, I feel it played into Ganondorf/Zelda/Link because it's basically a direct sequel (I know the timeline, relax) to Ocarina of Time, so you already know what the dude was up to and what he feels. They really should have played through with Zant to the end. He was more interesting than Ganon imo, and Ganon's introduced so late that it's almost nebulous what he's doing beyond "evil things." When I played TP I hadn't played Ocarina, so there was a disconnect in meaning. Real talk though, the fishing pond and rollgoal were the shit. 1138
