The Flood / Re: Regarding the issue of Biased Moderation.
« on: October 09, 2014, 08:11:28 PM »

Spoiler
The following isn't to be taken personally. I honestly don't think any members of this site are bad, the worst I'd describe someone is misguided.

Moderating specific members is horrible.

That system needs to get removed, ASAP, and I won't support the moderation if it continues. Ban the user if they get out of hand. It's a good idea on paper but it leaves so much room for more anger and bias it's not even funny.

Yeah, I get it's to try and stop inflammatory posts that cause pages of stupid internet drama, but I don't support censorship. If this site is so shitty that one idiotic response causes a hoard the mods can't handle then:

A) The moderation is completely ineffective, since clearly people don't care enough to watch what they post

or

B) This site has become such a circle jerk that it isn't going to survive long anyway.

As someone who isn't involved in any of this crapfest:

The drama needs to be stopped. This is the first time I've had issues with it so I'm not going to go crazy. But if this spirals out of control again I'm positive this site will die.

I feel that this recent incident was handled correctly in regards to the new rules.

I'm probably going to regret this, but I'm unhappy with the the lack of foresight. It should have been obvious that certain people in certain positions would stir trouble.

Anyone, not to brown nose, but promoting you was probably the best reaction to the recent events. It shows I can at least trust this site to stick together a little longer.

Overall the increased popularity of the site was incredibly bad timing, combined with Anarchy weekend I think a lot of new members were exposed to less than ideal conditions.

Moderation Bias should no longer be an issue, if it becomes a popular complaint again I hope more strict actions are taken.

As a final note, I do support temporary posting restrictions, but only in emergencies (when there is too much going on for the moderation team to handle and they need time to sort through posts). That being said, temporary restrictions shouldn't last a noticeably long period, and I'd only use them to not anger a member with a ban that was placed before fully understanding a situation.

Spoiler
The warning system was put in place for minor offenses that, originally, would call for a temporary ban. In order from least to greatest restrictions, it goes watched >> moderated >> muted. All warnings decay over time, slipping down through the statuses until it reaches 0%, or non-moderated status.

It's not our intention to censor users here in terms of restricting what they can say; the practice is done to keep someone who obviously won't abide by verbal warnings from flooding the forum with rule-breaking posts. If a moderated individual's post isn't breaking any rules, then it will be approved.

Since we have so many members who can approve a post (4 monitors, 5 ninjas, and myself) it's extremely unlikely that someone's post will be held back just because someone doesn't like it. It's only going to be rejected if it breaks the rules (and Ninjas are the only ones who can reject a post).

Valid arguments, and I'm all for a "watched system"

I should make myself a little more clear.

Users requiring their posts to be approved feel censored and that's what counts (ex: some people in this thread).

While having an approval system keeps people in line during fits of emotion, it also is a major cause of more anger and feelings of mistreatment. If you know that all of your posts are being hand approved, you feel singled out. It's the same for the watch system, however with the approval system you have the feeling of being singled out and the feeling of censorship. The approval system is unintentionally harsher then a ban, when it's being used as the step before a ban.

It doesn't matter the intentions, or if it's being used in a non-biased manner.

Saying that a moderated system is always censorship is a big step, but it doesn't require a large imagination to see how easy it is to abuse.

Are moderated users sent back unapproved posts and reasoning behind the denial in a PM? If users don't know why there posts are being denied they can't learn from mistakes.

I'm just trying to alleviate the separation of staff and user base. The last thing a small site needs are users disliking moderation.

« on: October 09, 2014, 07:30:19 PM »

I used to but now I'm not sure. I have a new found love for story telling but my English class is squeezing the fun out of that idea. Plus writers don't exactly make big bucks unless they strike gold. I'm not sure I'm good enough.

What do you like writing about?

It's very new found. Writing used to be my least favorite subject. I don't have any huge stories written out yet but I've started jotting down tons of story ideas. My biggest idea is about an ice age, currently. I guess you could say anything involving adventure, moral decisions, and discovery.

I'm kind of on the same boat as you. I want to do computer programming, and from the basic classes I've taken I can see I'm decent at it, but I love seeing my creations come to life. I discovered I enjoy the end program, not so much the coding.

Never thought I'd branch from STEM, to be honest.

Serious / Re: Do you believe Attempted Suicide should remain a crime?
« on: October 09, 2014, 06:52:18 PM »

How about we consider it a mental condition instead of a crime?

Yeah, it shouldn't be a crime. It's a condition that needs to be treated.
It's the same thing with drug related things, pedophiles or child porn buyers/downloaders. For the CP thing it should only by a crime if you're involved in making it.If you're the person that buys it you shouldn't get arrested for it if you're caught with it. Pedophilia is nothing more than a mental condition. To me there would be a lot more pedo's and drug users getting help if their problem isn't considered a crime. Lets say you're a pedo and you know it. Would you really want to get help for it when you know your problem can be a serious crime and it's greatly looked down upon? Those two things I can see turning them away from help simply because they're more afraid about coming out with it,.

All of these issues tie into poor understanding. I was one of those guys who used to think "all pedos should get the death penalty" or "anorexic people are pathetic, why would you ever do that to yourself", etc.

However, I had someone close to me (have, it's still going on) go through serious mental problems, and it's a huge eye opener.

Anyone dealing with mental issues like suicidal thoughts or actions require support. Yelling at them, being impatient, or punishing them is far from okay. Each mental issue is unique and in the case of mental issues that affect others the justice system needs modernization. Honestly, it needs more than modernization. This issue is kept relatively quite compared to current issues like gay marriage, but it's just as important.

Serious / Re: Do you think Buddhism is really a religion?
« on: October 09, 2014, 06:38:19 PM »

From what I understand there are two fairly distinct major kinds of Buddhism, Theravada and Mahayana.

Theravada, the oldest version, is actually quite secular. It's mainly based on the idea that having ambitions and desires is what leads to suffering, and rejects the idea of deities, souls and afterlife. They don't actually believe in literal reincarnation either, rather the "circle of life" which they see as a constant cycle of birth, illness and death which is escaped by achieving nirvana, which  basally means to completely abandon the world. They don't worship Buddha either, but revere him as a wise teacher. The closest thing to a 'supernatural' belief Theravada holds is the idea of Karma.

Then there is Mahayana, which is what makes up the majority of Buddhists. This form does believe in spirits, and while they do not believe in a creator deity, instead believe that by achieving nirvana anyone can gain omnipotence and omniscience and become a god, and thus worship Buddha as one of an infinite number of deities. They also believe in an infinite multiverse, and that our universe is just an illusion and that the only thing that actually exists is the "Ultimate Reality" which is described as being impossible to describe. The specific traditions and teachings vary widely between regions, but Mahayana is most definitely a religion.

The more you know

I'd say the reincarnation bits qualify it as a religion. Of course, Greek Mythology used to be a religion, times change. One day Christianity could become mythology and everyone worships a Flying Spaghetti Monster.
