Serious / Re: Sexual Assaults on US College Campuses.
« on: November 20, 2014, 06:35:06 PM »
Why are colleges and universities even allowed to handle something like that? Shouldn't it be treated as a criminal matter by, you know, the police?

Colleges have a conflict of interest when handling these situations. The name of the game is damage control. They don't want police on campus, because that's bad publicity. They're inclined to protect their reputation no matter what, and their track record speaks to that.

I've never had to deal with a situation like that, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. But I would trust the government to uphold my rights sooner than I would any for-profit organization.

Seems like a good game, but I can't play it without getting motion sickness. Same deal with Dishonored. I'm sure Viktor Antonov is a talented artist, I just wish I could enjoy his work :/

Gaming / Re: More proof that Destiny's DLC is disc locked
« on: November 20, 2014, 06:14:40 PM »
That's part of the 2 GB update they just added. I'm all for bashing destiny but don't lie
I didn't know that but is it really any different than having everyone download the dlc and then locking it behind a paywall? It's no different from being disc locked.
Yeah, but without that, the playerbase gets splintered. This isn't nearly the first time it's ever been averted in this way.s

It's one thing to have exclusive missions locked away, because you can simply not let everyone go there.

But a problem occurs when you introduce new weapons, gadgets, vehicles, or anything else that isn't in the vanilla version of the game. It's better to let DLC players use their DLC content with people who don't have it, rather than force what's essentially two different continuities of the game--with DLC and without DLC--to the online functionality. It's not good if you have friends who can't play the game together anymore whatsoever just because one of them did not purchase the DLC. I can tell you, I for one would NOT be happy about that. So the simple solution is to make sure everyone has the same version of the game, and just lock some stuff behind a paywall.

On the bright side, when or if the player decides to purchase this content, it's already there. But suffering through a huge update for content you don't want or have is such a drag.

According to Marty, the original Halo 2 ending is pretty much locked in a vault somewhere. Now that he's left Bungie, he might not even have it in his possession anymore, because legal stuff. It's unlikely to ever see the light of day >.>

The article is from 2013, and there's nothing about it since then. Did nothing else happen since then?

Keep in mind, an investigation is simply that. No charges filed, no convictions. Reactionary politics gets us nowhere.

The Flood / Re: Worst Teachers You Have.
« on: November 19, 2014, 07:10:52 PM »
The only truly lousy teacher I ever had was the one who tried to teach Shakespeare without really *getting* Shakespeare. Keyword: tried

Conversely, one of the best teachers I've ever had was a thespian who adores Shakespeare's works.

Well, I did have an English teacher who thought that Shakespeare was the pinnacle of English literature...

I mean, he is though. She/he is technically right, we still learn about Shakespeare and he changed the English language as is.

Maybe I mean this in terms of what he did for English culture
Yeah, but like, there were still better play writers after him.

Doesn't mean he can't be considered the pinnacle, I actually think Shakespeare is quite good, really good. It's a game of opinions in truth
Shakespeare is about as good as one can possibly get. Pretty much no other single person has had quite as much influence on the English language as Shakespeare, and that's just the shortlist.

Discussions in school resemble a YouTube comment section, with complementary loss of brain cells.

I had to stop my lesbian friend from smashing her head into the desk during their "arguments".
The worst part is, a lot of schools or teachers don't even want to hear rebuttals. The exercise is more about letting kids speak their opinions instead of actually justifying them. It's a truly unbearable exercise in tolerating everyone else's intolerance, and ignoring everyone else's ignorance.

So I sympathize with your friend >.>

Eh, a lot of people dislike this song because the lyrics are semi-rapist, what with the whole "No, don't go home, stay here and have a couple drinks more"

Same as the people who dislike Santa Baby. They're just quite sexual
Just some good ol' fashioned casual sexism, is all. I've never liked this song anyway, but now that I've noticed lyrics, just... squick.

I ought to say, "No, no, no sir"
(Mind if I move in closer?)
At least I'm gonna say that I tried
(What's the sense in hurtin' my pride?)
That people try to defend this song is mind-boggling.

Well, the original version didn't exactly have the "rape" undertone to it.
Yes it did. The printed score labels the roles as "The Mouse" and "The Wolf," and the lyrics are the same.

Not because of that. If I remember correctly, the song was written for his wife.

Of course, I'm probably wrong since I don't study holiday music history.
I think you're right from what I've been able to find. I'm trying to decide if that context really changes anything, though.

Serious / Re: Piracy
« on: November 19, 2014, 01:37:10 PM »
Ehh, I consider it stealing and I don't do it. But it's difficult to defend stupid business practices.

Sometimes there's stuff I want that isn't sold where I live. I don't want to buy an address in Japan just to get a legal file of a song from an anime I watched. (Or worse yet, I don't want to buy an entire music album just for one song that I liked on it.)

There's really no reason in this day and age to not sell products internationally, or have exclusivity deals for things primarily available on the Internet. That's basically asking people to pirate your shit.

It's simple, really--just shut the fuck up and take our goddamn money, no strings attached.
