Is this thread the epicenter of autism on the internet?
I think so.
nah, there's been some good music in this thread not all of it, but, yknow. some.

here you goi tried to play it safe at the beginning, but it gets a little more edgy as you reach the end. if you don't like a song, skip it, but i'd recommend listening until halfway and at least listening to them all once. and if you get to the end and want more, I have some more stuff you might like.

Those 3" discs are probably extremely valuable--I don't happen to own any. Wonder how much they go for. Was there ever an official name given for them? There's an easter egg in "Physical." If you listen closely at the beginning, you can hear Trent whisper, "Eat your heart out, Steve." He's referring to Steve Gottlieb, who was the manager of TVT Records at the time--and purportedly the individual who initially tried to restrict his creative freedom with this EP.
haha, no way. i just listened to it, you're right. fucking guy, that's awesome.

I haven't heard NIN in a very long time, so I can't remember, I do remember hating it.
being sort of a nin newb, i can hand pick a few songs for you, if you'd like i'll try to ease you into what reznor's like. it can be daunting if you just jump into something like starfuckers inc.

metal is a shit genre
i'd hardly call NIN metal though, except for the Broken EP
about that is there any reason there's, like 85 tracks dedicated to just silence lasting about 1 second each on that CD

Rarely. Trent's lyrics are often left vague on purpose--that way, it's easier to make it more "relatable" (and therefore more enjoyable) to a lot of people. Sure, a lot of his songs are deeply personal ("Hurt" being the most popular example), but in general, the lyrics are rarely the focal point of his music--so he keeps it safe and simply most of the time. He catches flak for that sometimes--some people think it's lazy writing, but eh. I think it adds something to the music, personally. like, johnny cash's version of hurt conveys a very different message than reznor's. i think that gives his writing a little street cred, if that makes any sense lol i feel weird now, idk. i really hope your interpretation of his lyrics don't alter my own -- i like them just the way they are, haha That's the version everyone seems to like, but I actually prefer the studio version. The fuzzy guitar line and the crowd cheering at the end give me some serious chills, evertiem. well, i don't have with teeth yet so i'll have to wait and see what i think. i just got year zero yesterday but i'm not going to listen to that either until i get my fill of TDS.

I think the song is less about sex and more a metaphor for drug abuse, actually. "She" likely refers to heroin, which I know was Trent's drug of choice when he still used. Does he ever explicitly state what he means by his lyrics? I know some artists do that, but others leave it open to interpretation. With Teeth is the first album he made entirely sober, and it's the point where a lot of NIN fans stop caring for his music. But they shouldn't, because he's still capable of making great music, and With Teeth is a (mostly) good album. Yeah, from what I heard it seems like a decent album. The quiet version of "Right Where It Belongs" is great. And Gone Girl's music was really good, which I think he created. I remember thinking that while watching the film and then finding out via twitter that he was involved. and i know he did the main theme of black ops 2, if you didn't know. it's actually quite goodHis drug abuse didn't start getting really bad until post-Fragile era, where he almost killed himself ODing. It was at that point he knew he had to sober up--and he did. yeah, when his grandmother passed away i assumed is when things started to go downhill for him. kudos to the guy for sobering up tho, mustve been hell i assume that's when he cut his hair and started working out Maybe. He tweeted that there would be "new NIN" this year, but whether that means an album or not isn't really clear right now. Here's hoping.
i would KILL to see him live. I was watching his Woodstock show in '94 and was like "ohhh my god"

Uhm, okay. So, obviously a lot of symbolism here that I'm just not going to be able to dissect right now. Hopefully my brain churns out something this weekend that you might find interesting. but what makes you like the video so much?

Closer took me longer to get into, so you could always try Unknown Pleasures and see if that helps you ease into it. yeah, i'll put it on the list. but i've got a few other albums i'd like to indulge in first. Closer is, to me, one of the most tragically depressing and emotional albums of all time.
what about it specifically makes you think that?

Finished it. As for my thoughts... I dunno man. I can't seem to get into their vibe. A lot of the instrumentals feel repetitive and the lead singer's voice feels very monotonous. the eternal is a pretty solid song, but otherwise... it's weird though because i do enjoy a lot of new order's stuff, and i know they're comprised of the same members minus the guy who killed himself. i'm going to listen to it in the future to see if it gets anything going for me, but uh, yeah.

The reason I ask is because they seem like the "standout" songs on the album. idk, they're the only ones that explicitly talk about (what seems to be) sex in that sort of detail. they're both quality songs tho. the opening to sanctified is perf. "Heaven's just a rumor she'll dispel as she walks me through the nicest parts of Hell [...]
Every day I hope and pray that this will end ...but when I can, I do it all again" what do you think he means by that? i have my own thoughts but i sometimes feel as though i'm projecting my own life onto the album -- which may be the point, idk. that's why i like PHM the most so far, it really speaks to me, i guess. what's interesting is that he brought the song back for live performances during his latest tour, which was cool--it's very rare that he revisits PHM songs that aren't Head Like a Hole, Terrible Lie, SICNH, etc. you think he's going to tour again this year? i would love to see him in concert. i heard something about new nin stuff this year but does that mean a new album or...? Closer is a good song, but I can't listen to it anymore. I've simply heard it too much. It does have what is perhaps the greatest music video of all time, though, and it greatly enhances the music. I'd check it out if you haven't.
no, actually i haven't. i'll watch it right now.
