I'm from Canada and I'm undecided. On the one hand, I view gun ownership as such a childish and vain hobby, but then I look at my comic book collection and say the same thing. I understand the cultural significance of gun ownership in the U.S., but I do think it is a little ridiculous that you can buy a gun at something like Wal-Mart.
Ultimately, the problem isn't the guns, it's the people. If responsible people want to have guns, let them. To me, it's more about personal liberties than, say, safety or hunting, like some people like to think. I don't buy the "I need to protect my family and my house" argument.
There's my unfleshed-out, amateur opinion on it.

You may be more than a little biased here. From what I can tell, your brother is neither particularly smart nor "intellectually mature to know right from wrong". It's normal to think more of people we're close to, but you can't let it cloud your judgement. But see, he is smart. He wouldn't be getting the grades in the programs he's in if he wasn't. But maybe his judgement isn't what I thought it was, yeah. Your brother needs your support, but he also needs to understand that this is not okay and that there might be consequences for what he's done. He's at an extremely impressionable and young age where things like this can shape him quite a bit. Coercing a very troubled girl into giving him nude pictures could be what starts him down a path to a lot worse than just that. Yeah, I feel slightly responsible for how he's turned out (this isn't exactly his first offense with stuff like this, it's just the most publicised). Maybe I could've spent more time with him, molded him a bit more... I don't know. Regardless, my parents have forced me to handle the situation because, in their words, "they just can't anymore"... I'm thinking the best way to handle this is to be firm but fair... spend time with him, bond a little, try and get him to understand why what he's doing is wrong... I'm rambling, sorry. My knowledge of Canadian criminal law is pretty shaky, but I can give you my opinion on the legal side if you'd like.
I don't see it getting that bad after today's proceedings, so that's okay. Both my brother and the girl decided that they wanted to keep in on the "down-low", which basically means that my brother won't be attending school until March break and neither will she.

You'd think "smart" would also mean being able to pick and choose the better actions and morals to undertake, but it doesn't.
