What about a social contract/legally binding agreement between two individuals is inherently religious? And if it was, why should it have to stay that way?
Because to me marriage isn't between two individuals, it's between 3. The man, the woman and God. If that isn't the definition of marriage, it should be. Ecclesiastes compares it to that of a rope, with 3 individual strands making a stronger line. That's also why divorce was a much bigger issue before, because marriage used to involve God, and if you divorced, you were divorcing God as well. There's almost always a church, a priest, verses, etc. at a wedding, because it's always been a very religious ceremony. And it should stay that way.

but the way you responded to Maverick's post seemed to imply that you thought only Christians should celebrate Christmas, or something like that.
Well, I kinda do think that, but only in the sense that Christ's birth is what should be celebrated and all the pagan bs like the trees and consumerism gift giving should be dropped. And like you said, the actual date of the holiday should be moved.

i never said christmas was a religious holiday
Therefore, it's asinine to question why non-religious people would celebrate it.
no it isn't it's a pointless holiday also finally got it

i just dont understand why you'd even want to get married if not for religious reasons.
Same reason a non religious person would celebrate Christmas.
equally as stupid
Except not even remotely, because Christmas isn't even a Christian holiday. The Bible makes no mention of the exact birthdate of Christ (it's almost certainly not December 25th), and it's widely considered to be a pagan (see: sacrilegious) holiday that is no more about religious sacrament today than is having a birthday party for your child.
It's even condemned in the Bible, which, frankly, is all the more reason for atheists to celebrate it.
Jeremiah 10:2 - 4
Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
i never said christmas was a religious holiday

>Tax breaks >Social pressure to maintain a monogomous relationship (though it seems to be fading) >Tradition >The experience (holding a large social celebration) >Legal benefits (besides taxes)
commonlaw provides all of those tax and legal benefits marriage is a religious function

you could hatch infinite eggs or soft reset infinite times and statistically you would never be guaranteed to get one
nah, this is something i've learned in statistics
When dealing with two or more possible outcomes, there's a process called statistical inevitability that essentially guarantees that both outcomes will manifest if you're given infinite time to do it.
it's conceivable that you could hatch a billion eggs and never receive a shiny, or a trillion, or a googolplex, but once you start playing with infinity, then you basically guarantee that you'll receive the desired outcome, because you literally have all the time in the world to get it.
Obviously, we can't live forever, so it's technically not guaranteed, but assuming you sat there and hatched 10,000 eggs in search of a shiny, it's very unlikely that you wouldn't receive one. You can essentially boost your odds to 99.99%, especially with all this Masuda method shit, Shiny Charms, chain-fishing and whatnot.
so you say "nah" and then write a book that essentially says I'm right
99.99 isn't 100
have you ever taken a statistics class
yes and I guarantee I've taken more than you or verb
See he admited I'm right
ive never taken one so youre right there

Just out of curiosity, because I can't be assed to read the rest of the thread, how many vegans/vegetarians here would be fine with consuming meat in a non-industrialized society? That is, if meat products weren't mass produced, and we weren't wrecking the environment, would you eat a pork chop?
no. i wouldn't see the point unless the animal was already dead, but i do that now. if my ma makes a steak i'm not going to tell her to throw it away; i have an obligation to make use of the animal's suffering.

i sort of see where you're coming from, but i'm far too stubborn to go back on my convictions now. even if i think we've got like 100 years left and then we're done.
plus being a vegan is fucking easy.

just hopping in to point out that if the animal industry was abolished overnight there would be no need for an increase in vegan diet options, as the food they used to feed those confined animals would be more than enough to cover the difference in human food amounts.
That's not gonna solve our problems. The farming is diabolical for nature and many animals would still suffer plenty at our hands -- there's a mass extinction event occurring at this moment and animals that aren't even used in the industry are going extinct.
Oh yeah, there's the problem of our ever increasing population too.
doesn't mean we just sit around and do nothing about it
humanity's years left may be numbered but that doesn't mean we need to brutally harvest creatures on top of destroying our planet.
Most of those creatures that we brutally harvest are doped up on drugs, and would destroy ecosystems (on top of not being able to survive) if released into the wild.
i don't want to release them into the wild, either. just stop impregnating them. and they're definitely not on any drugs considering dying animals are routinely denied pain-reducing drugs so that the meat can be harvested and sold

the risk is still too great.
Are they born radioactive?
they're a huge chance that they'll be born with defects. being born at all is pretty shitty -- being born with illness is even worse.
