The Flood / Re: Art
« on: August 13, 2017, 01:02:54 AM »
I think of art in a much broader sense than that. Basically if someone has artistic intentions, I'd consider it art. Making a statement with your clothing, for example.
What about aesthetic forms in nature? Fractal geometry for instance, something that can absolutely instill some emotion or idea in someone, is essentially nothing more than looped mathematical functions.

I wouldn't consider that art. Art necessitates artistic intention.
Well I disagree entirely I guess. Reality is art to me. Virtually anything can be perceived as art, and in my eyes, so long as a single person exists to perceive something as art then it's art.

When you can apply a definition to "virtually anything", the definition is flawed. It doesn't actually encapsulate anything. Reality can be beautiful, but there's nothing artistic about it.

I think your definition could use some work.

Something that sells a lot is not art.
Something that looks nice is not art.
Something that requires creativity is not art.

I'm a gear-head too but cars aren't art.

nice poem, faggot. Gonna hang it up in an art museum?

Maybe I would if we still had the print button.

Something that looks nice is not art.

TF you on about?  Is the Pietà not art? The Ghent Altarpiece?  The One-Way Color Tunnel?  Those aren't art?
i think what he meant was that you don't NEED those things for something to be art
Not trying to sound snarky or anything, because I'm genuinely curious.  but how can someone create art without being creative?  I'll admit the not looking nice part is a bias of mine, but I don't think that's really worth going into.  Sorry, my thoughts are all over when it comes to this topic

You need creativity to create art, but just because you use creativity does not make what you're creating art. That's my position.
So it's more than creativity alone, as in the case with cars.  It needs to be creative in conjunction with meaning, if I'm understanding correctly.

You could say that, yes. Meaning and intention. Intention is integral to my definition of art.
Ah, I put creativity and ability... technical skills before meaning, mostly because I've seen too much bullshit where people use conceptual art as a crutch for their blatant lack of any artistic skill or simply as a gimmick.  Like the "this is not a pipe but a drawing of a pipe."  Like no shit, the audience isn't that dumb that they think your 2D render is the actual 3D object.

I think of art in a much broader sense than that. Basically if someone has artistic intentions, I'd consider it art. Making a statement with your clothing, for example.

Obviously those are art, but not because they required creativity or because they look nice.

I realize artstyles are a question of taste and opinion, but if anything I think anyone should be commending DE for managing to make everything so unique and downright alien. A lot of the designs look like something you would never see in another game and the creative mind(s) behind it all deserve some praise for managing to keep everything so fresh and 'foreign', so to speak.

I would hesitate to commend them purely for making things look "unique" (because really, anyone can make a something "unique".) What I would commend them for is:

a) Making the aesthetic of the game look unique in a consistent way. It all looks like deviations of the same 4 "families" of design -- Grineer, Corpus, Infested, and Orokin. Everything that's Grineer looks like it should be Grineer, but also fits into the game's overall style. Same can be said for the other families.

b) The variety present in each lane of design. No two assets look the same, but all assets flow and work together in visual harmony.

b) Despite an unpopular art style being demonstrably less profitable, they still decided to do it and managed to pull it off. There's nothing I like more than creators successfully pulling off their artistic vision.

I really want to get back into it but for some reason the game requires administrative access, and even when I allow it the game tells me I still lacks the necessary permissions to launch.

Have you uninstalled and then reinstalled it?

Nah I didnt get frost prime

How come?

All the people I've talked to are skimping on the free primed warframe, and I just don't get it. If nothing else it's a free 6000 mastery points. Not to mention that Frost is actually a pretty solid frame all around.

I just find that almost everything looks really ugly, and not in the sense of this is supposed  to envoke disgust, more just none of it looks good at all. It all feels too overdesigned. I suppose it's the fantasy element of it I dislike. I like scifi with designs that look practical and functional so warframe offends me. But it's probably one of the only games where the art style put me off playing. Bleh.

I respectfully disagree, though I understand your position. I think you've mentioned that art style (and the atmosphere/setting it helps establish) is one of the main aspects of a game that draws you in. That sort of thing is barely important to me, so I can't really sympathise with your concerns. The art style is unique enough to stand out and helps drive home some of the main motifs of the game, both of which are commendable for such a small studio. I will say that there is a brief adjustment period to the visuals, but you do eventually come to enjoy them. It is also much more a fantasy game than a sci-fi one, which may hamper your enjoyment further.

That top image you posted is probably one of the only halfway decent designs they have though.

It reminds me a lot of the Forerunner or (what I imagine) Precursor armour would have looked like. There's some armour that looks straight Didactic.

It's an acquired taste.

I played this game for three hours and all I remember is that it was boring and the art style was fucking awful. Though xbox says I last played it in august 2015 so maybe it got better.

But yeah the people who design all the characters should be shot

i have nothing but respect for the character artists tbh

they could have just as easily made something generic looking to appeal to more people but they stuck with something intentionally niche because it suited their vision far better

DE is genuinely one of the best developers in the industry right now

its not like halo 5 where the armour designs feel inconsistent with established aesthetic. all the warframes fit perfectly in this run down world of mutilation and death. it really grows on you.

How do i remove this damn cyst. Its fully grown. Ive had it for weeks lol

Ok, didn't know that door would open. Got it removed. What is the point of that?

Cysts can be used to create new companions, but it's not really worth it IMO.

So I haven't really played since Second Dream, once I finished it I took a break. Did I miss a lot?

Edit: I mean the War Within, havent played since then

I haven't played since before the Second Dream, and I'm trying to get Banjo caught up with me so we can play Second Dream and War Within together.

I wouldn't know what you missed.

War Within feels like a brand new game once your done with it. It's what showed me the potential of Warframe

Second Dream is alright

Damn and I already love the game to death.

I've heard really good things about everything after the Second Dream.

I don't see what the government has to do with what you quoted.
Ah, yes, peer pressure.

That will solve auto-segregation, and is certainly strong enough by itself to have an evolutionary effect through selective breeding.

lol what
There isn't a real way to enact quotas across the nation without governmental orders.

i didn't say anything about quotas

im just saying that as a society we should be encouraging women to break the mold of their predispositions rather than just accepting them as unchangable.

the guy should be allowed his opinion just as google should be allowed (and justified) in firing him when he publicly makes his opinion known in thw fashiom he did

its just another case of people failing to stay in their lanes if you ask me
Welcome and encourage, yes.
Discriminate to enforce a diverse office, no.

Affermative action is a failed concept.

No one suggested otherwise.

Trying to decide whether I should focus on power duration or strength on my Rhino. The survivability is important to me but allow the stomp to do more damage and keep people in the air long enough to get some health back would be great.
