well, it's not any insult
calling someone fat may be insulting, but it only becomes ad hominem when i say, "you're fat; therefore you have no say"
i'm sure you knew that, but i'm just gonna clarify that Well yeah, I meant in a debate format. Pendulate made an interesting point that I've adopted. That any insult can be viewed as ad hominem (in debate format) as it's still an intellectually dishonest attempt at smearing your opponent's credibility. i sure would
I updated what I meant.

Enemy
[en-uh-mee]
1.a person who feels hatred for, fosters harmful designs against, or engages in antagonistic activities against another; an adversary or opponent.
So my point still stands. If you're going to use a good insult, use it on an enemy.
The extreme connotations that come along with it, like some sort of 'mob boss' mindset or whatever you guys thought I was implying, are simply unnecessary.
Ah okay.
So we can't have fun.
Alright.
No, go right ahead. Like I said, I was just taking out my... uh, "frustration" with Iron Man's "burn" on you. Because yours was much better but you didn't mean it. Whatever. It's late. I'm tired. Bleh.

the word you guys are looking for is "opposition"
I really don't see how that fits, either. I wouldn't insult my "opposition". And I don't think most people would, either.... Enemy is really the best word to use. People you dislike, are having an argument with, and by extension, insult, are your enemies. Just because it has extreme connotations doesn't make the word any less apt.

Enemy means someone you hate and you don't want around you.
Adversary and/or opponent is better when it comes to opposing viewpoints and in debates.
But if you're going to insult your adversary, wouldn't that make them your enemy? Really, any insult without an argument is ad hominem, which simply shouldn't have a place in debates. I think that adversary works well for the future, but not when talking about insulting people. Enemy doesn't cut it either, though.

I understand. It's really the only word that can suffice until another, better word can be found.
What do you think: would "adversary" work better? Or does it have the same connotations as "enemy"?

Oh yeah there are lots of differences. But no, I'm not gonna restrict myself to follow some sort of silly "get le bad guise" mission. But your point that "you shouldn't have enemies (fuck it, "adversaries") on the internet, because it's the internet" is kind of empty. If I can't make friendly jabs at people I like, then fucckit.
Yeah, you're right. I don't even know why I nitpicked you. Probably because your burn was good, and in reference to your friend, whereas Iron Man's was shit, in reference to his enem-* -adversary. Seemed like a waste to me. Carry on, amigo.

Enemies?
Fucking lol. This is the internet, not the streets.
I already explained why I used "enemies".

« on: July 25, 2015, 02:02:04 AM »
I make jabs at everyone. So save them for the people that deserve it. Especially when they're good burns. You'll usually garner more respect/admiration from your peers that way. If you can't take a joke then you shouldn't be on the internet. Well, I mean... I don't see what's different from the internet and real life. Other than the fact that one's physical presence (Ex. charisma, charm, attractiveness) is completely absent, making the conversations a bit more... objective(?). Not sure if that's the right word. Anyways, my point being that there's no real reason to make the distinction between the internet and RL. Especially since the former has benefits that the latter doesn't. Also "enemies"? Again, this is just the internet.
That's why I quoted "enemies". I meant it in the way that you are opposing his argument. In the same way that two debaters are "enemies" -- they don't hate each other, they're just on opposing sides.

you're gonna have to try a little bit harder That's what she said. you're like comms and batch combined
Could be worse.
Yeah, you could be TBlocks.
Now THAT's a good burn. Too bad you don't mean it.
Of course I don't. I'm not a douche.
No, but if the burn had been in reference to Verbatim, you'd be singing a different song, right? My point being that if you have good insults, save them for your enemies. Otherwise you end up with crummy jabs at people like Iron Man's "that what she said" shit. Not that you're one to insult your "enemies". Just tryna make a point.

Well it is but I'm being funny to piss off Verb cause he hates my views :^)
I think his problem with you is that you don't justify your views. Just from what I've seen, at least.
but then he'll also whine about me not justifying my views, either
even though i do
every single time
Preaching to the choir, hombre.

Most of the discussion has nothing to do with Theism. And my beard doesn't completely cover my neck.

What're you Loaf?
No, this is Patrick. No but seriously, everyone thinks I hate religion because I bought this book. I don't. I own a copy of the Koran, does that make me a Muslim? No, I bought this book after reading Frank Turek's "I Don't Have Enough Faith To Be An Atheist". To understand a subject, one must understand both sides of the argument.

I never took American History X. Sorry :/ it's a movie about an ex-neo-nazi skinhead who, after getting out of prison, tries to prevent his son from going down his same path he did
Brother, IIRC.

I never took American History X. The movie. You ever see it? Fucking great. Edward Norton was awesome. I think it's on netflix, check it out. It's one of my favourite movies of all time. Unless you're not being serious, in which case disregard.

I like me and my little reality. :] Well, not much I can do with that. Haha. Oh you didn't... believe me. But you're like okay.
Cool, I'm glad. I guess it's an insecurity that I have, that I might ostracise myself from the people I like because of my "extreme" beliefs. It happens on the regular, and it sucks.

if you want someone to change their outlook on life, all you have to do is present evidence to the contrary The trouble is getting the evidence that satisfies the person. It's why most people I argue with are still natalists/theists, they don't want to accept the obvious facts because it doesn't make them "feel good".

« on: July 25, 2015, 01:03:41 AM »
Sorry, just saying that it depends in how you see things. If you see things like that then there's little one can do to change that. I really don't see it that way. Well I mean, it's pretty obvious that our world is mostly pretty shitty. Not everyone lives in the first world, and even most who do, don't live lives that are all that great. Yeah, a lot of people claim to be happy and stuff but humans are hard-wired to never be 100% satisfied. It's called the hedonic treadmill, you may or may not be familiar with it. So, it's not a "matter of perspective", as you seem to think. The evidence is there -- we live in a shitty world. Nay, reality. Having a mindset to the contrary is your right as a human being, but it only says to me that you don't care about what's true. You care about what makes you feel good. Which is, again, your prerogative. Well you are always cool when talking so... lol
Well, hopefully I don't change your mind because I agree with Verbatim on... mostly everything. I enjoy your company as well.

Only if you want it though. Wait, clarify. "Only if you want" what? What am I wanting? But then again, you're actually being pretty nice so I'm just going to say that its cool.
Hahaha, thanks?

I didn't say it was irrational, just edgy. I see no difference. "Edgy" means that you're different for the sake of being different, which is irrational. Any pessimist is a pessimist because they believe that the bad outweighs the good. That's why they're a pessimist. Not because they "want to be different". I think that being a realist is acknowledging both good and bad stuff. No extremes, just a balance. Well, I mean, there isn't a balance. The bad overwhelmingly outweighs the good.
