We are not going to ban a user for one week for spoiling a game - namely because the concept of a spoiler is so damn objective to people.
Spoilers are absolutely objective. If they post something that happens in the game, that's a spoiler. Period. I'm not asking for permabans on "THE ENDING IS SOOO GOOD GUYS" even though they annoy me.

Well given the situation I would say these spoilers as a good example. It's obvious how much trouble it's caused so quell that by showing it's not tolerated. By letting someone get off with something like this shows weakness and cracks in the rules.
Also, anything the jeopardizes someone's well being or mental health needs severe punishment. The fact that suicidal people can told to kill themselves without consequence is fucking retarded.

1) Monitors already fulfill that role, and they're not limited to one board. No they can't. Last I checked, you can't edit/remove people's posts. 2) I can't speak on behalf of the upper staff, but that sounds awfully draconian and will probably never happen. How? Just a friendly reminder that going dark is the only foolproof means of avoiding spoilers. I already addressed this. I wanted someone to take the reins from me so I could go dark but no one stepped up, so I felt responsible for it. Excuse me for giving a shit about the community. This came off as harsh Kupo. That last line is something I've been asking myself for a while.
My guess is they need to revenue, which is understandable but I'd rather see more ads on my screen than have to deal with this shit. Any other scenario besides incompetence doesn't make sense to me.

Enlighten me, then--how is that so? Ideas: 1. Forum-specific mods, with powers that work temporarily and need to be looked at by permanent mod to take full effect. None of their effects last permanently, so any mistakes they make will be rectified. 2. Thread-specific extra-permissions application Very little downside. The person needs to apply for each specific thread, to which he can be denied if he's untrustworthy. Typically reserved for big threads, like my MGSV or a Star Wars hype thread, etc. Also, it's that's person thread. Don't like it? Make your own thread.

Truth is, a lot of these ideas really are ripe for abuse. Overreactive changes are only asking for trouble.

Highly unlikely, a nice idea on paper but in application its far too susceptible to abuse, a person can edit out what they don't like or just flat out lock threads when things don't go their way. Even if the staff gives it to more "responsible" members, there have always been cases of members who have generally been more calm to lose their cool. Its just not going to be a thing, sorry.
1. It's their thread, they should have control if they want. Don't like it? Make your own thread. 2. It's not like a monitor position. Each thread would need to be requested specifically. If I was allowed to have these permissions in my MGSV thread, I wouldn't have it in my Street Fighter thread. See how that works? It only applies to my MGSV thread, because it matters there. Mods would be able to say "Okay, he means to update this thread appropriately, and in the past, he's shown maturity. Let's grant him this."

Even if we were to throw a harassment charge in, you're still looking at no more than a few days, at most.
Why is the punishment so lenient? Increase all the bans if they're so soft. Jesus, it's not easy to break the fucking rules. And if you do, you should be punished accordingly.

Thank you. This is what I am saying. It's not like insults and shit are even remotely as bad as spoiling. You can apologise for an insult or harassment, and the negative effects are mostly mitigated. Likewise with porn. There's no coming back from something being spoiled.

Reminder that deletion and locking permissions will likely never become a thing due to the potential of abuse, even when trimmed down to members who are less likely to abuse them. What about my alternative? Another reminder that board specific mods/monitors will never be a thing, such a limiting position isn't needed, especially not one caused by such an incident, maybe if we had the size but not how things are right now.
Evidently it is needed though. Also, "not having enough people" seems like a pretty stupid reason. If the person is up to the task, what's the downside.

If you are that concerned over remaining spoiler free, I suggest avoiding Gaming forums in general in the ramp up to your release schedule. I wanted to but felt a responsibility to my thread as a countdown. I stated multiple time that I would like to pass on the responsibilities. Which would also be a nice feature. we cannot guarantee that someone won't PM you a spoiler, or hide it in a random thread. I can only receive PMs from people on my buddy list. Whom I know won't send me spoilers. So, yeah, you can guarantee that. Welcome to the internet.

So then who should I ask? Because if he was going to get banned for a week based on his actions, his goal is accomplished. He ruined the game for people 3 days ahead of it's release.
