And no no, I gave Peace Walker another chance on Ps3 and loved it. I couldn't finish it in time for 5, so I watched the movie.

That being said, I thought the story was great. I told another friend I thought it was as good as 3's.

Awesome. Yeah, it's quite good. IMO, the best in the series go

MGS1
Peace Walker/Snake Eater (interchangeable)
The Phantom Pain

Quote
The story of MGS is just stale now. We've covered everything except Raiden in between MGS 2 and 4.

Spoiler
And what happened to Big Boss before Zanzibarland/Outer Heaven.

Which is what MGSV was supposed to be, but I digress.

And Kojima is sick of the series. He's wanted to end it since 2001.

And we all know it won't be good WITHOUT Kojima, so yeah.

This is going to sound crazy, but

I think it could be better without him.

If you take the KojiPro team, and get a creative lead that respects and understands the lore, you could make the game we've been waiting for.

The foundation was set with TPP. All they need to do is deliver on the gameplay side of things again, but increase the story quality.

I hated that 4 just said "oh these cool and loveable people from 3? Yeah they're actually really evil and twisted."
i actually kinda like the sound of that, because it just kinda shows the dynamic of... being
it's often said that there's no evil--just evil motives and warped viewpoints of what is good

unless you're saying it was executed poorly

Snake's former CO, Zero, went from a 007-loving British geek to the all-powerful antagonist of the entire series
Snake's former medic, Paramedic, went from a quiet, movie-loving shut-in to a sociopathic doctor that routinely performed morally questionable (at best) acts on Snake's most trusted ally (Fox)

Yeah it's pretty bad. If you ever get around to playing them you'll see what I mean.

Yeah... so? I wasn't talking about the story, obviously.

I hated that 4 just said "oh these cool and loveable people from 3? Yeah they're actually really evil and twisted."

I think Kojima did bad writing on that, but was forced to throw them in 4 so it showed fans 3 wasn't an unnecessary oneshot, even though that was the intention.

No. Like everything, MGS4 is just needless pandering to fan desires. That's all it is.

And if anything, MGSV could've rectified those mistakes -- easily.

I think it only shows the series was just getting... old.

If anything, this game proves Metal Gear is still on top.

Seriously, great series, but it's reached the point where the games stories just aren't anything amazing anymore.

How do you quantify that? You're the only one I've ever met who didn't like Peace Walker. A lot of people say it's on-par with the original 3. That was 2 games ago (1 if you don't count Ground Zeroes).

Let's not pretend that it's the series's fault for not being good anymore. I could've come up with a better plot than this; it has nothing to do with the franchise's age.

Like, it's such an awkward game.

On the one hand, the gameplay is -- literally -- flawless.

On the other hand, the story is completely underwhelming.

Something must have happened behind the scenes. I can't allow myself to believe this is how Kojima wanted to end the series.

I was always a "Journey is better than destination" kinda grill (still am), but it rubbed me the wrong way.

Both the journey and the destination suck, though.

Kaz? No, he didn't. Kaz only took it that way.

So yeah, in the end Big Boss was still honestly a bad guy, and his whole nations without borders is stupid too because they can do whatever they want with little to no repercussions.

1. They can't do what they want with little to no repercussions. No more than any other nation.

2. Big Boss has been a bad guy since the end of Peace Walker, where he went completely against The Boss's will.

Spoiler
You people have a bad habit of making shit out to be better than it actually is.

The ending wasn't handled with anything but clumsiness. The story wasn't about revenge, turning into demons, or a fall from grace like the trailers advertised.

Big Boss had little to no emotion regarding revenge.

That's honestly what I'm thinking. There's no way Kojima'd pull that.
You forget, MGS2 was a thing. The build up to it resembles 5 a lot. Only not so in your face about it.

Except that MGS2 was intentionally bad about it.

It's not the same, trust me.

55% done the game. I played from 12 PM to 2:30 AM, only increased about 10% in my progression.

Over the course of the next couple of weeks I plan on writing my review. I want to 100% the game first, then make another save file and beat the game again.

I also want to watch trailers for the game once more, to see what was taken out.

Spoiler
I remember seeing gameplay of Big Boss from Ground Zeroes, AKA the real Big Boss, in The Phantom Pain. Which may indicate that we were meant to play as him at one point or another.

Anyways, good night.

Back on topic, would anyone have preferred it if Skull Face were somebody already seen in the series back for revenge, or did you like him as a brand new character?

I think his voice actor did an amazing job, but he wasn't very well-characterised in TPP and sometimes had a tendency to overexaggerate.

Yeah I can kinda see how Big Boss seems more like a fuckhead now. He essentially used one of his own guys as a human shield to die while he went off to do his own thing. No wonder Venom goes off the deep end. I have a sneaky feeling that tape he left him was to make him think that he was special when really, he's just using him.
Spoiler
Not to mention that they essentially brainwashed a human being for absolutely no good reason. Like, he was made into Big Boss against his will.
Spoiler
Yeah it does seem like a shitty thing to do.
'Btw you're Big Boss now cya lol'

The more I think about it though, it doesn't actually bother me that much. Sure, I was really excited to play as Big Boss again and see how he goes bad, but Venom Snake seems like an interesting character and we do KIND OF see BB as a manipulative bastard. It's just a shame we didn't really see a buildup to it or a payoff. Hell, even some more tapes on it would be nice.

I don't agree with the decision but I think that complaining about it too much will only make it worse. We've already had like 3 games to play as Big Boss, this is something different.

Spoiler
I don't mind playing as Ahab. I think he has the potential to be an even better character than any of the Snakes.
But the game advertised that we'd be getting revenge, that we'd become demons in outer heaven, that we'd learn the secret to the greatest MGS mystery.

We didn't do any of that. Except maybe revenge, but that was wholly underwhelming.

In fairness, a lot of the game must have been cut due to Kojima's falling out with Konami. Not that this changes the fact that we were outright lied to by the advertisements, mind you.

That's honestly what I'm thinking. There's no way Kojima'd pull that.

Now that I think of it... I reckon the last year or so of development was reworking the entire game to fit with what Konami had planned. Think about it... Ground Zeroes comes out in 2013, Phantom Pain... late 2015? I can't imagine, with the power of the Fox engine, that they spent all that time working on landscapes and balancing.

I was looking up the release dates for all the games, and I was surprised to see that a bunch of games in the series were released in America before they were released in Japan. Why is that?

Because Metal Gear is more popular in America than it is in Japan.

I thought that too but then I got called out on Twitter about it

Yeah I was wondering where that was going to show up. Chapter 51 maybe?
Maybe it shows it if you take the evil route?

Unlikely. But I'll give it a shot.

I haven't even seen a Vulture yet!

Side note, I really like how, instead of eating animals like in Snake Eater, this time you save them and take care of them on-base.

Way to go, Kojima. Push that vegan agenda.

That's what I'm thinking. I have the CE disc, and the cutscene at the end sort of resembles the scream.

But Big Boss isn't bloody. He isn't in Africa. He doesn't have his huge horn. He doesn't walk over dozens of burnt people. There's no vulture.

I can go into detail on what I saw if you like. Not sure if you've seen what the chapter was going to do...

I can't remember exactly, but it was something about feeling betrayed by Big Boss just fucking off without him. And he's going to continue the ruse, pretending to think Venom is BB.

That's pretty much how I feel.

"No. Big Boss can go to hell."

Yeah, great line. One of the few things I enjoyed about the ending.

At first I was like "What the fuck? That's stupid. I want to play as Big Boss, not this fuck."

But then I realised...

Venom Snake > Big Boss. It just seems pretty fucking selfish for Jack to fuck off and leave Ahab with all the responsibilities. Kind of character suicide, IMO.

At least Ahab doesn't have a choice, and actually has a good reason to be pissed off. And, he looks cool.

But just imagine Hayter voiced Snake in Ground Zeroes, Kiefer was the medic, and then Hayter voiced Jack/Ishmael in The Phantom Pain.

I would have shit myself. Missed opportunity.
