Because that's the response I get from every one of my smoker friends when I ask why they binge so hard/why they're still doing it.You don't think they have the prerogative to determine if smoking is right for them?Smoking is objectively terrible for you. Do with it as you wish, because you're the only person who can decide how to live your life. So, I don't think it's fair to condemn someone for exercising their right to personal freedoms. 7146
The Flood / Re: DC could overtake Marvel in the movie industry, and here's why« on: December 03, 2014, 02:49:43 PM »
I never thought the Marvel movies were anything special, anyway. Marvel has always been behind DC in terms of animation (DCAU is incredible,) and these shared universe movies they've been churning out are little more than popcorn flicks (The Avengers is the best example.) DC has the chance to tell a cerebral, gripping story with the new cinematic universe, and I'm expecting a lot from them considering the quality of their animated works.

Serious / Re: "If you don't believe in an afterlife, your life is worthless"« on: December 03, 2014, 02:26:47 PM »
Depends on how you interpret the meaning and worthiness of life. By my reckoning, we have no inherent purpose beyond reproduction, so if there is any meaning in this life, it's up for each individual to decide for themselves.

Serious / The Official Serious Reading List« on: December 03, 2014, 02:24:30 PM »
Add The Prince to Authoritarianism. And to add on to Mr Psychologist's post, I'd like to suggest The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat by Oliver Sacks as a good psychology/mental disorder book. And I may as well give a personal recommendation list.
Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury Brave New World, Aldous Huxley The Oresteia, Aeschylus Dante's Divine Comedy Canterbury Tales, Chaucer (also many of his "dream vision" poems, like The House of Fame, and his philosophical work "The Consolation of Philosophy") Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad Candide, Voltaire Wieland, Charles Brockden Brown The Stranger, Albert Camus The Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte The Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes Treatises on Government, John Locke anything Calvin and Hobbes anything by Shel Silverstein Walden, Henry David Thoreau The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, TS Eliot A Good Man is Hard to Find, Flannery O'Connor Sophie's World, Jostien Gaarder/Paulette Moller Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradbury A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Mark Twain 7152

I was also gone for all of 2012 and 2013 though, it became legal for recreational use in January of 2014. I believe crime has dropped a bit, and it has created a lot of revenue for the state's government as you said. I believe they planned on using that money for education.I live in Colorado.Did you notice any changes in CO after it was legalized? It seems to be turning a good profit for the government. 7154
The Flood / Re: Confession time: I have absolutely no reasonable understanding of why peeps smok« on: December 03, 2014, 02:07:37 PM »
depends on the substance.
i started smoking cigarettes because my friends did it and i wanted to see what all the hype was about. depending on the brand/if it has menthol, a cigarette can be a nice, calming experience (aside from the damage to your lungs.) i preferred natural american spirit yellows and marlboro reds when i still smoked. i quit before i ever got addicted because it's a drag on funds and not really worth binging on. people smoke cigarettes for several reasons. peer pressure, addiction, personal preference. same for pot. i smoked pot for the first time after junior prom in 2011, liked it, and started smoking (semi) regularly my freshman year of college. i smoke pot because it helps me deal with my anxiety and my sleep problems. other benefits include cessation of physical discomfort (headache? shmoke a bowl! stomachache? shmoke a bowl! etc) and, obviously, the high. pot can give any number of different types of highs, but generally you'll either experience a cerebral high (sativa) or a body high (indica,) and many hybrid strains exist to give you both experiences. i also think weed smells really really really good so that helps keep me smoking it. weed is addictive, but not in the way people associate with nicotine/alcohol addiction. there is no physical attachment and you wont experience physical withdrawal from quitting pot (except in EXTREME cases.) it is psychologically addictive, just like anything else in the world. its less harmful to the lungs than cigarettes (pure weed or tobacco does much less damage than tobacco mixed with volatile chemicals) and doesnt do any long term damage to your brain unless you're a chronic user who happens to be under 18. 7155
The Flood / Re: If marijuana was legal, would you try it?« on: December 03, 2014, 01:58:04 PM »better safe than sorry i guess. ill leave you with some tips in case you ever do decide to try it: if you smoke in your dorm, do it in your bathroom with the vent/fan on. take a toilet paper tube and stuff a bunch of dryer towels in it. when you go to exhale, exhale through the tube- it will help filter the smell and the smoke, the bathroom fan will do the rest. never hotbox a car (unless its in a garage where there's no chance someone nefarious will catch you.) never smoke in public places. pill bottles are a fantastic way to store weed and keep the smell isolated. and eyedrops do help a lot with the stoney red eyes. You must live in a country that really really hates pot 7156
