Gaming / Re: Post on why Halo 5 multiplayer is bad
« on: January 09, 2015, 01:38:24 PM »
At the end of the day, Halo isn't about the experience anymore. It's about the money. 343 isn't Bungie. They don't understand Bungie's vision for the original trilogy and they certainly don't understand why CE/2/3 were the greatest FPS games of this century. Bungie began to alienate the core fanbase in Reach, and 343 continued that with 4. 343 had a chance to bring it back. MCC was what Halo desperately needed. The original trilogy, remastered! Finally, some quality arena FPS after all these years, who cares if they're old games, we have Halo back! Nope... rushed development cycle led to horrendous functionality issues, and now they've killed what was left of their credibility. Halo 5 is gonna sell a bunch of copies and everyone is gonna be gone in less than 6 months. Halo is never going to be what it was in the halcyon days of H2 and H3. That's what happens when you forget the fans and pander to the big wigs.

No one should have to live through what you're experiencing. There are no words I have that can comfort you, nor any gesture that can truly express my feelings of solidarity and sympathy. Would that it were me, instead.

Good qualities:
Smart, eloquent, definitely not a shitposter

Bad qualities:
Maybe a little too confident in your belief system. A little doubt can do a lot of good.

sucks that they're buckling under pressure. i dont think the charlie cartoons are particularly funny or thought provoking, but the suppression of free expression cant ever really be a good thing.

there is something very disturbing about people who are into guns. its off-putting and more than a little creepy.
How so?
it seems like they're acting out a power fantasy. guns only have one purpose: killing or maiming. sure, competitive shooting is ultimately harmless- shooting some clay discs or paper targets isnt hurting anyone, and its an interesting and nuanced sport, but at the very core of the issue, guns are horrifying, evil things.
I own 6 rifles and I'm far from acting out a power fantasy. Some people like to collect cars but I like to collect guns. The primary purpose of all my guns is for defense, but they serve as decorations, collectibles, and things to tinker with. They're simply beautiful and elegant
that doesn't assuage any of my misgivings. this is just how i see it.

as trolly is this is, there is something very disturbing about people who are into guns. its off-putting and more than a little creepy.

edit: as i post this, my rotating avatar is on the gif of spike raising a gun. is this ironic? no, but maybe there's more to this than i might think.
I don't troll unless I believe what I'm saying to some extent.
the second part of the op was what made me think this is very trolly.

One time I ripped my niggas bong after eating too many pancakes and that was the only time I ever threw up from smoking.
the closest ive ever come to barfing from a hit was the first time i ever hit a real good grav bong. it hit me hard and fast. i felt queasy as hell for about 10 minutes, and then i was at a solid [10] for an hour or so.

first time i smoked weed was at a party after prom 2011. i was already beyond hammered and i coughed into the bong. water shot everywhere and everyone had a good laugh.

one time, i was smoking a j with a couple pals in a waffle house parking lot (yes, that is fucking ridiculously stupid, i know.) anyway, the parking lot was pretty much deserted, but after a few minutes we see this guy with a box walking up to us. he comes up, says hey, he sees the j, says "YALL  BOYS SMOKIN POT??" "uhh no sir just a cigarette" "nah im just fuckin with y'all. y'all wanna see something cool?" and he opens up his box, and shows us this plethora of trinkets, including police-grade flashlight tasers. he let me hold one and test it out, yep its a taser. he said $20 a pop for the taser lights and he was also selling phones. i didnt have $20 on me, but you can bet your ass i would have bought one of those suckers in a second.

Oh great more things I have to pay for!!!

'

Says the child who doesn't pay taxes yet.

Hey, if you want 50% of your hard earned money going towards low lifes, go ahead. But me, I want most of my money. At least 90%.
how can you say that in good faith? that's a horrible way of thinking about taxes. you think people who benefit from taxes are all low lives? you use that tax money just as much as anyone else in this country. that's a distinctly elitist and snobbish stance.

By 'good grades', I hope he means having a 3.25 GPA or higher.
wouldnt a 3.0 be reasonable? that's a B average
All B's. At least put some effort in an A and you can get some free money. 3 seems too low.
i think that's reaching a little bit. seems like an arbitrary choice, really. what's the big deal if a student makes a couple of C's, especially considering the nature of our public education system and its standardized curriculums? if they have a 3.0, they made enough As to balance out the C's. seems fine to me.

Serious / Re: What do you think Intelligence is?
« on: January 08, 2015, 07:33:21 PM »
So there's a difference between knowledge and intelligence. How does education support intelligence as it exists? Knowledge?

By providing knowledge at a level in which in compatible with a person's intelligence. That why a one-size-fits-all approach is stupid, because not everybody learns at the same rate or in the same way.

And to what I understand, genius would be the proper application of intelligence and knowledge to excel in a field.
And is excelling a societal or self label? I guess I should ask which is more important in defining yourself as a genius, do you think?

I agree, a one size fits all approach is idiotic, because it fails to account for individual difference. What about standardized tests? Why are they necessary if they approach intelligence by appealing to standards?

Standardized tests seem to have little purpose other than monitoring a given school's "success" when it comes to endowing the children with learning. Of course, along the way, they muck up that success, but hey who am I to judge, I'm not one of the politicians who pushed for this sort of thing, I can't possibly understand it..

Knowledge is owning information.

Intelligence is your ability to employ it.
What is the difference between genius and intelligence, if there is one?
I don't have a decent answer to that.
wouldn't genius just be an exceptional capacity for learning? or is there more? are geniuses naturally endowed with a special understanding of logical or numerical reasoning?

Serious / Re: What do you think Intelligence is?
« on: January 08, 2015, 07:20:14 PM »
it's my understanding that intelligence is usually associated with someone's capacity for learning, which seems reasonable to me.

there's intelligence, which is your ability to learn, retain, and apply information with critical thinking skills. and then, there's learnedness- i'm sure there's a better word for that, but i think you know what i mean. Bobby B might have the same capacity for intelligence as Susie Q, but Bobby B has only read Animal Farm- Susie Q has read both Animal Farm and 1984. Does that necessarily mean that Bobby B is any less intelligent than Susie Q? No, Susie Q just has more learnedness

that exposition didn't really lead anywhere substantive, i think, but the important thing is that intelligence is your capacity to learn and apply information, rather than the sum total of your knowledge.
So there's a difference between knowledge and intelligence. How does education support intelligence as it exists? Knowledge?

proper education should do a few things. firstly, evaluate the individual's capacity for learning. then, develop a curriculum which caters to the abilities and interests of the individual, so as to catalyze the natural development of knowledge. i think if a student is given the right tools to learn, not only will they be effective students in the classroom, but they will also strive to learn outside of the classroom, and to really gain wisdom and knowledge from their life experiences.
