I would have like a Japanese or asian actress but shit dont roll that way. Im afraid that they are going to fuck up the movie. Usually video games or anime to live action movies always end up in shit or worse, Uwe Boll could take a crack at it.
i think the Wachowskis would be the best choice for this movie. they were heavily inspired by the original GITS film, and that inspiration turned into the Matrix. i think if anyone could do a live-action version of GITS and make it not just passable, but incredible, its them

« on: March 28, 2015, 06:06:14 PM »
Voting is a duty, at least ethically.
this

we represent one half of the social contract, and as such, we are obligated to keep the other half of the contract in check, so as to protect the interests of both parties.

however, mandatory voting is a fundamental breach of our freedom of expression, by my estimation. i do think that people who dont vote are worthless, but i can understand where they're coming from. we were never given the option to opt-in to this social contract, and if we try to leave, we're just going to enter into a contract with another government anyway. however, you cant live free of government, so you might as well do your best to influence it in a positive manner.
I'm sorry, is government a necessary component of oxygen?

What kind of retard can't live free of government?
read the Leviathan. we cannot exist without government. without a social contract we will tear each other to pieces.

you're doing a very poor job of convincing me that you have the ability to think.

this is old news

the manga, movie, anime series, and OVAs are all incredibly good

im very worried that theyre gonna hollywood the FUCK out of this movie. if they make a good GITS movie ill be extremely impressed. ScarJo is a good actress, and she can pull off Motoko's look (Motoko doesn't necessarily have to look Japanese, since she is full prosthetic, after all.) it's all up to the other actors, the director, and the writers.
Wow. You actually think she's a good actress? She's so one dimensional. Have you seen her performance in Lucy? It felt just like how she acted in the marvel movies. Cold unfeeling and unrelatable. Even when she tried to be emotional she felt fake. I just have a really bad feeling about her casting in this movie. I was thinking that maybe she could play the roll of the puppet master? You know like when he hacked into that other synthetic?
have you seen the other boleyn girl, or the prestige, or don jon? i think she's got the chops for it. she certainly wont be the main problem with the movie. ill eat my words if she is, but i have faith in her ability to pull off the character.. that is, if she decides to method act this thing and actually consume the original media. im not so sure about that.

at least if its bad we can all pretend it didnt happen, like with the avatar movie.
im gonna be honest, I think one of the main reasons it won't work is because she's white. Terrible acting aside, the anime had a lot of artistic scenes to it and I really liked how it showed off a cyberpunk look at Japan. Now having the protagonist as a white woman instead of someone who was actually part of the ethnic region just makes no sense. Do they really need a big name actress to make this film sell or will keeping it accurate and consistent to the anime be "good enough"?
remember, motoko is a complete prosthetic. as such, she doesnt necessarily have to physically conform to any particular ethnicity. we've even seen significant variation in her appearance just in the media we already have, so i would argue that the claims of whitewashing are invalid, as long as we get actual substance.
i have only seen the 1995 film so that's all I can go off of unfortunately. It just seems more reasonable that if people create a complete prosthetic, they'ed make it look like one of their own. Not like somebody on the other side of the world. Especially since as far as I know, Japan isn't as diverse as the North American countries. So what reason would they have to make prosthetics not look like themselves?
you're getting close to one of the most significant themes in the series, which is the Ship of Theseus.

the Ship of Theseus is a classical thought experiment, which asks if something which has had all of its original parts replaced remains fundamentally the same object. motoko's origin story differs in each individual series, but the general idea remains the same; she has crafted her body to reflect very specific aspects of herself. she lost her body at a young age in all of the media (to my knowledge,) and she picked this buxom, feminine form after she reached maturity (at least in Stand Alone Complex.) her motives for her form are somewhat unclear, but we do know that she is at once the most attractive, smartest, most dangerous person "in the room." despite the fact that she is a complete prosthetic, and no longer "human," she retains her incredible intelligence and is one of the most "human" people in the series. she is the Ship of Theseus.

so, given what we know, its not outlandish to presume that she might have chosen a non-asian prosthetic model for this particular vehicle.

id also highly recommend watching the Stand Alone Complex anime. its the best seinen series of all time, imo.
i actually picked up on this theme after but I didn't see how it could relate here. I finished the movie and I was thinking to myself. "It was good but what exactly was it about?" Eventually I stumbled across a small explanation of that concept and it blew me away because it's actually a new idea to me. I see what you're saying though and it totally makes sense.
yeah, thats why i love GITS so much. its so incredibly visceral that you're never going to be able to absorb all of its messages and themes in one sitting, or even two. every time i go back to a GITS series i learn something new about it.

as far as actresses who are primarily known for their sex appeal go, shes one of the most talented. she even puts in good performances in shit movies like Lucy. her filmography speaks for itself
She is a meh tier actress though.
yeah she wouldnt be my first choice, but it isnt a complete catastrophe. the problems will surely stem from the people with creative control.
