What happens when people are relatively content and secure? What happens when they've nothing too horrid to find some disliking of?

They go loopy. Complain about the small shit. People like to complain.

As a species we're actually quite terrible at finding any sort of lasting peace.
thats called the Hedonic Treadmill, and its the best argument against transhumanism

it's a load of posturing aimed at the young white libertarians/progressives. that being said, he is the most palatable conservative candidate ive seen in a hot minute, and i think if the GOP put all their weight behind him instead of running against each other, he'd have an easy swing into the white house. but they wont.

i wonder what sorts of credentials you have to justify holding such a lofty position
*shrugs*

I'm well read, and I've been reading and writing since my early childhood. I'm a paid poet and I'm currently working on the first of my own series of books.

But in simple terms, wouldn't a sausage expert be able to recognise a superior sausage? Same deal.
thats what i figured.

and yes, a sausage expert would be able to do that. but not a sausage enthusiast. a sausage enthusiast has no formal training and simply thinks that their personal experience/expectations dictate objective worth, and as such, he will be implicitly biased and his judgement will be rendered impotent. get what im saying?
I've studied poetry, english, philosophy and journalism at University. I deferred my courses in mid 2010 because I wasn't enjoying it, or learning anything that I couldn't teach myself/already knew/know; but before I left I passed every assessment I was given. You shouldn't set too much store in formal degrees when it comes to writing. These things are helpful, of course, but natural ability and self-teaching can easily take their place.

What are your qualifications?
im a historian. my field is intimately tied to literature and ive spent more time poring through manuscripts than id care to repeat.

ill let you off the hook though. this isnt productive.
I'm not on a hook and you know it, if you really have the literary bent that you say you do ;D I'm only here to shit stir anyway. I can dislike Martin's writing, but art is subjective up to a point. He may seem like a Shakespearean genius to you.  But for me, he can be as grammatically correct as he likes, (or whatever merits you're judging him on) but that won't make his mind or his penmanship any more eloquent.

Anyway, I just finished this the other day: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/86745.A_History_of_the_Byzantine_State_and_Society

I like History, what sorts of things are you doing at the moment?
ill give you a pass on martin. he cant appeal to everyone.

that looks like a neat book. byzantine history is really cool. ive always been intrigued by Justinian, because his eccentric ways gave us so much cool art. gotta love the byzantine obsession with gold in their art, gaudy fuckers that they were.

right now, im critiquing a book on masculinity in america and working on a research project about the american homefront/domesticity during WWII.
Neat. Thanks for the pass, hahaha. Christ, I'm letting Fox Clan down, I'm supposed to be being obnoxious here. Are you actually a doctor or professor of history or whatever? How old are you?

Have you ever read Guy Gavriel Kay? He might appeal to a historian.
no, just a devoted student. im a junior in college, patiently awaiting the day i am released from my academic obligations so that i can pursue my own literary interests. im much more interested in philosophy/religion/aspects of culture than i am in political/military history, so theres no chance that ill pursue a postgrad history degree. my plan is to finish the bachelors and then get into a library science program, and after that i want to seal myself away in a library for the rest of my life.

ive never heard of that guy, but youve piqued my interest. are any of his works in the public domain?

Serious / Re: Sexism and dress codes
« on: April 08, 2015, 11:16:34 AM »
part of me wants to think like this, because of my firsthand experience with sexual harassment in public school.
Quote
this is why dress codes shouldnt be a thing and appropriate dress should be evaluated case by case. many yoga pant/leggings/jeggings/whatever are fine like this, but a lot of them are really form fitting or translucent, and like it or not, that sort of thing DOES distract hormonal adolescents. my school had a light policy about these things (only leggings were banned, and that was at the end of my schooling) and we had a pretty serious sexual harassment problem. then again, its also a Title I school, so thats probably part of it, but all the same, i think its best for the girls that they avoid wearing revealing/form fitting clothing without doing something to cover it up (like this girl did with her shirt.) in the same vein, guys shouldnt be allowed to wear compression shorts outside of an athletic competition. you just cant trust teenagers to act rational when it comes to sexuality.

another part of me wants to think like this.
Quote
censorship is fucking stupid, let them wear whatever they want as long as they arent half naked.

I can't believe people actually swallow it up.
and you'd be right, the green party is pretty fucking irrelevant in the grand scheme of things because they hold on to silly ideals instead of being practical, so they alienate like 90% of the voterbase
They've had a bit of a popularity spike recently though, especially amongst disillusioned students.
its a lighter spark in the desert, still wholly unimportant. most of these disillusioned students probably werent gonna vote anyway

personally, i dont think he's a serious candidate, but most of my problems with him stem from his social policies and his stance on climate change.

if you cant sit through a game of thrones book, you have the attention span of a 10 year old. martin's style is absolutely wonderful and eloquent. ASOIAF is a slow burn. the slowest of burns. its full of nuance and the characters are incredibly dynamic. he's done a great job crafting a unique world with its own distinct cultural, political, and social patterns. ASOIAF is the best american fantasy series ever written.

and im hyped as fuck for season 5. im interested in where theyre going with the changes to the source material, and super stoked about new information (like last season's Nights King/Other City reveal)

Well, SC still has the death penalty. The terrifying thing about this is that without that camera, he might not have been charged with anything (thought how you justify 8 bullets in the back is beyond me).
ill go ahead and say the cameraman is a hero. takes some real testicular fortitude to record someone committing such a terrible crime, especially someone with authority and (basically) impunity. maybe this will be the catalyst for real, nationwide re-evaluation of law enforcement.

there's some context missing, but this is pretty clearly an abuse of power. the cop was not threatened in any way. and you see how calm he is about the whole thing? just killed a dude in cold blood and immediately began "covering his tracks" (for all the good it did him, bah.)

I take it as a good thing he isnt like his dad. Ron Paul had some insane ideas. Like defunding epa along with half of the rest of govt agencies.

Rand has been a bit more sane, and has been leaning more moderate than any other conservative I'm seeing so far.
doesnt ron paul also want us to use the silver standard
