I also think that in 3rd person games, there needs to be a button that automatically moves the camera directly behind the Character, like Z-targeting in the Legend of Zelda. Out of all the 3rd person games I've played, I definitely found that system to work best.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the character models never showed a spinal structure. That Rocket through the spine thing was, as Turkey said, from before somebody cared enough to make a canon definition of their anatomy, and Nylund likely just wanted to communicate how utterly dead the Hunter was, after them being depicted as walking tanks earlier in the books.
