Kind of related. Is the WiiU worth it? I want it primarily for the Metroid digital trilogy bundle that was recently announced. I only played Metroid Prime on the Gamecube over a decade ago and never finished it. I just have some questions:
Is there a decent selection of retro games available in the Nintendo eShop?
What is using that control with a built in screen like? Is it just a secondary screen for menus and items, or can I take it into a separate room and play Metroid on it?
How big is the Hard Drive? I would probably get most games digitally.
Is the pro controller worth the price?
Is it worth getting it for just Smash, Metroid, and potentially Mario Kart? I won't be playing locally with anyone, it would mainly be for solo gaming.
Sure it is.
There's a decent selection of retro games available. Sega Genesis, Game Gear, NES, SNES, Neo Geo, etc. They don't have N64 and GC support ATM but it should happen soon. In the meantime, DS games are coming to the Wii U virtual console.
The Wii U gamepad can be used for both maps (and whatever else the devs want to use the gamepad for) and off-tv play. With the metroid trilogy you will have to use the Wii mote and nunchuck, technically you could play metroid away from the TV (the gamepad has a sensor bar built into it) but it would be inconvenient for sure. Pretty much every Wii U game supports off-tv play without needed an extra controller.
The hard drive is 32gb. A variety of external hard drives are supported.
The pro controller is excellent. I highly recommend if you plan on playing Smash or Mario Kart with friends.
It really is. Those games are ones you could play for hundreds of hours but I'm sure you will find other games you would want to play. Star Fox, Zelda, Splatoon, Mario Maker, and Xenoblade are all on the plate for this year and there's plenty of great games from 2013-2014.
That's a big turnoff that I would have to go and buy a wii mote for Metroid. The first two in the trilogy were on Gamecube so I was under the impression that I could just buy the Pro Controller and play them like any other FPS. So they're not adding any Wii U controller support at all for Metroid and it's basically a Wii U port with no enhancement?
Pretty much yeah, I was pretty disappointed myself, especially considering the other ported games from other consoles work natively with Wii U controllers.

£159.99, not bad. Is the 3DS worth it?
Yes. The 3DS has a lot of games that you can spend hundreds of hours in. Smash, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Monster Hunter, etc.
Yes, but the strong suit of the original DS was a huge amounts of (cheap) quality games from a range of genres, and it's ability to play GBA games. The 3DS can't play DS games, but can't the 2DS play 3DS and original DS games? So would the 2DS be a better choice than the 3DS?
Any 3DS can play any og DS game (except guitar hero)
I thought the original 3DS couldn't though?
Nah, it definitely can.

Are they bringing one of those out every year now or something?I swear I'm seeing 'new 3ds' all the time or something. It's getting like fucking apple.
Handheld consoles =/= home consoles You cannot have 1 version of a handheld console for 5+ years. You need to make improvements to build quality, features, etc. Handheld consoles go through a lot of shit, and need to be built upon to last.

It really depends on if the new features cater to you. Do you want to play games like MH4U, Smash, Resident Evil, and Ironfall that take advantage of the second analog stick? Do you use 3D and want better viewing angles? Do you need better build quality? Is amiibo support something that would benefit you? Personally, I'm getting one but its not for everyone.
